Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping, Mackinaw City, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2012 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

We wanted to walk the bridge on Labor Day, but didn't think that we would be able to find a place to camp. We were pleasantly surprised that we found a site available at the last minute, especially one that could accommodate a big rig. After we arrived, we found out why. The campground is GINORMOUS!!! And it has a wonderful view of the lake and bridge. In fact, there is a mile long beach. The park normally has a checkout time of 11am but to accommodate the bridge walkers, they extended that to 1pm. That didn't affect us, since we were staying over an extra day, but I thought that it was still a nice consideration. Nobody at the park office told us that there was a bike path just the other side of US23, but luckily my Maplets App let me know about the Gaylord to Mackinaw Rails to Trail that was right there. Very convenient, since we had left our tow vehicle in Traveres City for the short side trip. We hopped on our bicycles, and rode the couple of miles into the city without having to worry about the traffic. The trail is very nice. But if you have a city bike and not a hybrid or mountain bike, it will not be for you. The campground does not have a good garbage policy. You have to walk or drive your garbage to the one dumpster located at the the park store. This wouldn't be a problem in a smaller campground, but is a huge inconvenience in such a large park. We didn't use the showers or restrooms, so I can comment on that. We camped at Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping in a Motorhome.

Addison Oaks County Park, Leonard, Michigan

Date of Stay: August, 2012 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed for six days and absolutely loved this park. It was so quiet and peaceful, the camp personnel were helpful, the restrooms were clean, and the trails were free of debris and litter. We walked nearly all of them while we geocached in the park. Although there was no Wi-Fi, my MiFi from Verizon and my cell phones all had 4G service and worked great. My only complaint was that the trails were not marked along the way with colored markers on the trees to correspond with the color of the trail shown on their map. We got turned around more than once, until I found a map on my Maplets App on my iPhone that worked great. If the trails had been better marked, then I would have given this campground a 10 rating. We camped at Addison Oaks County Park in a Motorhome.
