Opelousas South City Park, Opelousas, Louisiana

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $11.00
Overall Rating:

This campground was a find...and we had trouble finding the camp sites! The park is easy to get to, tidy, safe and quiet. There are at least two (perhaps more) different camping areas, both with water and 30/50-amp electric service for $11 a day. There are no signs directing you to the campgrounds and no park map. The electric and water "posts" are only 2 feet or so high and they blend into a low barrier wire and plantings. The two campgrounds we found were a graveled and packed dirt parking lot to the right just inside the park gates and, further back in the park, there is a larger grass meadow with concrete slabs with electric and water posts with mostly back in sites. Because of a chance of rain, we wanted to park in the parking lot as a pull thru but missed the campground/parking lot on the way in. So....I took photos, added annotation to them and uploaded them here for you so you know what to look for and where. No one came to collect the $11 so I hiked over to the park office the next morning to pay. We will definitely stay there again when traveling thru the area. We camped at Opelousas South City Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Louisiana Orphan Train Museum is poignant and educational. I'd heard the stories in the Midwest (and the National Orphan Train Museum is in Kansas) but didn't know the children were also shipped south. The folks of Opelousas are to be commended for this touching presentation of history.

Mazalea Campground & RV Park, Biloxi, Mississippi

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Best buy in Biloxi! Lovely, quiet, clean, well-managed RV park. The interior roads are narrow but the trees are well trimmed and folks are understanding. Offices ladies are sweet and helpful. The campground store has most things you need at fair prices. Utilities, including wifi, were excellent. Our concrete pad was a little off-level side-to-side, but we can handle that. If the tall trees block your satellite, there are dozens of channels on the park's cable. We will DEFINITELY stay there anytime we are in the area. In March, their azaleas are coming into bloom and they are spectacular. We camped at Mazalea Campground & RV Park in a Motorhome.

Deerwood Inn Madison Campground, Madison, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

Lovely, well-managed campground located behind a motel. Sites are long and level, grass with tall trees providing lots of shade. Utilities were fine. Office lady is helpful and charming. Convenient to I-10 but road noise was not a problem. Wifi slowed as more guests logged on, but was adequate. Two dozen or more OTA channels. We will stay there again on our way through Florida. We camped at Deerwood Inn Madison Campground in a Motorhome.

Paradise Park Condominium Association (55+), Punta Gorda, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Paradise Park is a clean, quiet, well-managed, 55+, land-owned, condominium community with activities and amenities, including a 9-hole golf course and small lake. Because of their bylaws, only Airstreams or Class A's are allowed. There are about two dozen sites available for rental and we spent six weeks there. Our site had a nice tool shed that had full hookups, including a washer and dryer. Neighbors are very nice and, on Friday mornings, locals run a small farm stand up at the gate. Wonderful campground! We camped at Paradise Park Condominium Association (55+) in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit Manatee Park in Fort Meyers...not a "fancy" theme park or zoo...it is a small protected body of water maintained by Florida Power & Light for the outflow of the warmed cooling water of their power plant next door. The best time to go is in the winter, in the morning (so sun is behind the viewer). Like retirees, Manatees go there in cold months to spend the winter.

Tanbark Campground, Dickson, Tennessee

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Lovely park, clean, quiet, well-managed and maintained. Electricity and water pressure are excellent. Verizon coverage is excellent, sites are shaded by well-trimmed, mature trees (trees which may require you to "space" your slides) but we received a dozen or more OTA television channels. The entrance to the campground is in a deep curve; you might want to time your entrance and exit. Nice folks live and work here. We were in for an over-night and will stay here again when in the area. We camped at Tanbark Campground in a Motorhome.

Ouachita RV Park, Monroe, Louisiana

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $32.00
Overall Rating:

As others have written, this is a good park: clean, well-managed and maintained. For the most part, it is quiet (hidden by the trees, there is a shooting range nearby and that can be disconcerting at this time in America). The office folks are organized, cheerful and helpful. Two trees, each near the first turns of the entrance and exit, need small, lowest limbs taken off (their leaves brushed our air-conditioner), otherwise, I'd have rated the park a "10". The only tricky part has nothing to do with park management: it is getting to the actual access road on that side of I-20 and not turning too soon and getting forced back onto I-20. Only Exit 120 will work (because there is a bridge out on the access road before the next exit.) The access road, called "Frontage Road", is the next road AFTER the onramp that will force you to get back onto east bound I-20. Go past the first ramp - to the stop light - and then turn left at the light. (The frontage road/access road runs in front of the Hampton Inn hotel.) Nice campground; we will stay there again. We camped at Ouachita RV Park in a Motorhome.

Albuquerque North / Bernalillo KOA, Bernalillo, New Mexico

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Quiet, well-managed park with level sites, clean bathrooms, good electricity, cable and Wi-Fi. There are few trees and the patios have artificial turf but this is customary in high-desert country. We found one fault: the dump station is immediately adjacent to the children's playground - immediately adjacent (on the fence line); AND the dump station is slightly uphill so spilled fluids might run or be washed into the playground. We camped at Albuquerque North / Bernalillo KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Not only is the Kaktus Brewing Company next door, there is a gate in the fence between the KOA and the brewery! (Look for the "BEER" sign and follow the arrows around the back of the brewery.) Food at the brewery was excellent: salads and sandwiches in addition to pizza and customary bar food. The brewery has two outdoor patios, both are comfortable.

Walnut RV Park, Vega, Texas

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Nice park in this part of hot, dry Texas: short prairie grass around the sites, trees, flowers nearby. Park is well-managed and maintained: sites are level, electricity and water supplies were fine, owners very nice. As others have posted, the food at Roosters, the small Mexican restaurant across the road, is excellent. (Their crispy chili relleno with blanco cheese sauce was one of the best I've ever had.) Like us, many folks are just stopping for the night, price reflects that. We will stop here again when we travel this direction again. We camped at Walnut RV Park in a Motorhome.

Hermann City Park Campground, Hermann, Missouri

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This city park has two, separate RV areas, near each other and managed by the same parks department. The older one has the lower site numbers, shade trees and was so popular, the City of Hermann installed FHUs in the parking lot of the municipal swimming pool to accommodate more RVers. (To get into the parking lot, use the FIRST entrance ramp. The second entrance ramp is steeper and longer rigs will drag toads.) All RV sites can be reserved on the weekends, not on weekdays. Parking lot sites are level. Some of the sites in the older area need a leveler or two if an RVer has "dug-out" a mud hole leaving in the rain. Bathrooms are thirty-plus-years old and dim so they always look like they need scrubbing even just after they have been cleaned. All the trees were trimmed when we were there in late August. Our site had good electrical and water service. Verizon coverage was poor-to-nonexistent. No OTA TV. Pay station/drop box is on one of the bathhouse doors. Watch for kiddos: this is a lovely city park with playgrounds, playing fields, group gathering shelters, tenting sites, and swimming pool so often there are dozens-to-hundreds of children darting about. We had a lovely midweek stay in Hermann and will be delighted to stay there again. We camped at Hermann City Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Amana Colonies RV Park, Amana, Iowa

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

This is a rally/convention park with large level sites, grass and gravel, some with young trees. Good electric and water supplies (and CG was less than 20% occupied when we were there.) CG is well-managed: office staff is organized and helpful; bathrooms and laundry were clean and in good repair. Excellent Wifi, some OTA television stations. Verizon service was also excellent. We spent a week there and will stay there again. We would have loved a swimming pool but that may have been impractical in an Iowa campground of this size. We camped at Amana Colonies RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you like thin-crest pizza, seek out P.H.A.T. Daddy's; their Supreme pizza is the best we've had in years. P.H.A.T. Daddy's doesn't advertize much and we had to search for it. (They are located in the same building as Serena's Coffee Shop which does have a large sign.)

Frontier Fort Campground, Jamestown, North Dakota

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

There are two contiguous areas of the campground: one area is treed with grass and gravel; the other is a back in row along one edge of the sloped parking lot of the restaurant/gift shop. Our site was in the parking lot, needed two stacks of levelers and the price reflected that. We spent the weekend there; noise was never a problem. Electric and water supplies were fine. There were some OTA channels. Verizon coverage was usually good. Very nice folks in the office. Food and prices are good in the restaurant. We would stay there again. We camped at Frontier Fort Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Buffalo Museum is poignant, please go. If you can't see the bison herd from the top of the hill...go down to the bottom of the hill and drive the dirt road off to the right...you will see the small herd and their bull bison at the bottom of the hill. (He is brownish because he likes to wallow in the dirt.)

Lake Elmo Park Reserve, Lake Elmo, Minnesota

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of the few RV parks on the east side of Minneapolis/St. Paul and it is convenient to the Minnesota State Capitol Museum and other museums. Sites are wide, long, unlevel and expensive ($7 more a day for the toad without an Iowa State Parks pass). While we were there our site (14) and two other sites had reoccurring low voltage on one phase of the electric service. (It was hot, in the 90's but the CG was less than 30% occupied when we were there.) The park is large and lovely; Verizon service was good and there were some OTA television channels but we will not stay there again. We camped at Lake Elmo Park Reserve in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Minnesota State Capitol Building is gorgeous with wonderful stories of typical Minnesotans thru the decades. We toured two other wonderful sites near there, all managed by the Minnesota Historical Society: the History Museum and Fort Snelling. All were EXCELLENT. Capitol Buildings tell you what their people are proud of. Minnesotans are proud of the good and brave folks who lived/live in Minnesota. The Minnesota Historical Society tells their stories well.

Red Trail Campground, Medora, North Dakota

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent location, part of charming Medora. Walk to almost everything. Site electricity was good, water pressure got low at times. You may need levelers. Campground is very popular and some of the sites have potholes from RV tires hauling out in mud but the campground doesn't seem to be empty long enough to be graded during the summer. Excellent Wifi and Verizon coverage, half a dozen OTA channels, well-stocked store (there isn't a better "grocery store" in town so best stock up on your way into Medora.) Bathrooms and laundry are well-used but clean. We will definitely stay there again. We camped at Red Trail Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

You will want to drive the 36-mile loop thru the beautiful Badlands of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and use your vehicle for protection since both bison and wild horses walk across the road and stare you down! Medora is a lyrically charming town with a beautiful amphitheater for "Medora the Musical", performed 7 evenings a week. Next to the amphitheater is pre-show dinner with excellent food (especially the steak and bison roast). During the day four stage acts perform. Joe Wiegand's interpretation of Teddy Roosevelt was incredibly good. His audience loved him and gave him standing ovations.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful, well-managed and maintained campground. Most sites have sunflowers, tall trees and nice views. Their Web-site is cute too. Water is very soft in the land of alkaline water...use half of the soap you usually use. Wifi was very slow but Verizon signal was good. Our site needed levelers on the passenger side. Manager is well organized and very helpful with touring the area. We would stay there again. We camped at 7th Ranch RV Camp in a Motorhome.
