Dam West Recreation Area COE, Carlyle, Illinois

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $18.00
Overall Rating:

Excellent COE park. Hosts are friendly and helpful. Well maintained with modern facilities, and clean restrooms and showers. The Saturday evening educational program conducted by a park ranger was excellent, and an about the monarch butterfly. Nice level sites (many are paved) with big, mature trees and abundant shade at almost every site. Some sites are lakeside. Very nice campground on Carlyle lake. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Starved Rock State Park, Utica, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in site 118 in a 5th wheel. Sites are badly needing gravel, low hanging limbs rub in many places. Campsites on wooded loop are over grown with weeds, with poison ivy everywhere. Trails and scenery are beautiful, as is the visitors center and lodge. Obviously, the state doesn't care about the condition of the campgrounds, as this state park campground is the worst we've ever experienced. We will return and stay in a cabin or the lodge, but we'll never use the campground again. The site superintendent should be ashamed that the most visited state park in Illinois has the worst camping facilities in the state. It's sad. We camped at Starved Rock State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Kentucky Horse Park Campground, Lexington, Kentucky

Date of Stay: June, 2017 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

We had a nice level site, on the outer loop toward the incoming road. We enjoyed the campground store, which was clean and well stocked with essentials and souvenir and gift items. The only glitch was the main electrical distribution box lost a fuse on one leg of the feeders, which in turn killed the power to our, and several other sites. The maintenance folks on site diagnosed the problem, replaced the fuse, and had eneryone back up within an hour. We loved the horse park and museum too. We camped with friends, and they secured tickets to the stud farm that holds triple crown winner American Pharoah. So, we toured that facility and got to see many champion horses. It was a great long weekend, and a very nice facility. We camped at Kentucky Horse Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Beaver Dam State Park, Plainview, Illinois

Date of Stay: June, 2013 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Nice campground, and we like it for a weekend trip, due to it being located within an hour of our house. I can remember my folks camping here many times. Nice little fishing lake, but they no longer have a bait shop, so plan accordingly. Sites are in nice shape, and the showers/restrooms are well kept and were clean and attended to. Paved roads in good shape, and gravel sights are the norm. All in all, a nice, quiet place for a relaxing weekend. We camped at Beaver Dam State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Washington County State Recreational Area, Nashville, Illinois

Date of Stay: May, 2013 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Nice state park, and good campground. We have camped and fished here many times, and we always have an enjoyable time. Campground hosts are usually very nice and cooperative. Showers and restrooms are clean and well maintained. Sites are spacious, and mostly very shady. Fire rings, BBQ grills, picnic tables at each site. Water is available at several locations throughout the campground, and at the dump station. Nice lake, boat docks, and store with the essentials, plus fishing bait, ice, snacks, etc. Also have decent archery range. We camped at Washington County State Recreational Area in a Travel Trailer.
