Sanlan RV & Golf Resort, Lakeland, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $56.00
Overall Rating:

Nicely kept Resort-style campground although the dumpsters were overflowing when we arrived they were cleaned & emptied a day later. Perimeter and some interior roads were narrow but paved while many interior roads were grass. Very open so little visual privacy. Many recreational opportunities with plenty of use by the friendly snowbirds we met. Definitely would stay again whenever we visit the Lakeland area. We camped at Sanlan RV & Golf Resort in a Motorhome.

Frank LLoyd Wright designed buildings at Florida Southern College on Lake Hollingsworth Drive are worth a look and the nearby Polk Museum of Art quite often has special exhibitions. Lots of restaurants around Munn Park in downtown Lakeland.

Blue Spring State Park, Orange City, Florida

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Paved roads and path for easy access to the Spring. Sites are generally small and not level sand and grass. Some visual privacy from the vegetation between sites. Bath houses are excellent with lots of hot water and good pressure with a bench and plenty of hooks to hang your clothes. A county paved trail system which runs for miles is adjacent to the park and is planned to become part of a county wide system in the near future. The Spring was closed to swimming when we visited as it was full of manatees and the park was full of visitors making use of the boardwalk and sidewalk that parallels the Spring and Run that connects to the St. John's River. We camped at Blue Spring State Park in a Motorhome.

Little Manatee River State Park, Wimauma, Florida

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Bath house closed and cramped not well-cleaned trailer is the substitute. Plenty of hot water but you need to keep pushing the button to keep the water flowing. No laundry as that was part of the closed bath house. A notice at the trailer stated that they are awaiting contractor bids for construction of a new bath house. Sites are close but most are separated by vegetation for visual privacy. Lots of trees but we still managed good Dish TV reception. The river is shallow and narrow but still ok for kayaking. Main activity here is hiking the many trails. Generally the park needs some upgrading and better maintenance as things are getting rundown. On the positive side we had to leave a day early to meet a commitment at home and were given a days refund without asking for one. We camped at Little Manatee River State Park in a Motorhome.

Anastasia State Park, St Augustine, Florida

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

Heavy vegetation between sites for good visual privacy. Campground treed for shade along roads and iffy for satellite reception, but good Verizon cell service. Terrific sparsely used white sand beach during our early Sept. stay. Lots of nearby seafood restaurants and plenty for tourists to see and do in St. Augustine. We camped at Anastasia State Park in a Motorhome.

Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort, Charlotte, North Carolina

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Stopped here to visit family in Charlotte as it was the only campground available. Would rate it higher if our destination was the theme park but it was pricey for our use. Treed campground was partially shaded and grass had little chance to survive with cars and trucks driving and parking on it. We enjoyed a visit to the camp store and a nice clean pool that had few others since it is next door to a water park. Directly under the airport flight path for fairly continuous jet noise. Big amusement and water park next door draws most visitors. We camped at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort in a Motorhome.

New River Campground, Gauley Bridge, West Virginia

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

A few campsites that parallel the river are outstanding. The rest are extremely close together and are gravel, grass and mud. This is a very scenic area close to many kayak/ canoe, 4-wheeling/dirt biking and mountain biking/ hiking venues. The campground is right on US 60 and across the river from a busy rail line. It is noisy 24/7 and we only stay here to visit friends and relatives in the area. We camped at New River Campground in a Motorhome.

Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park, Limestone, Tennessee

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Mostly pull-thru FHU campsites close together with limited shade. We stayed during the week and had a campsite facing the river with no close neighbors near a large shade tree, also no pool as it is open only on weekends this time of year. Great historical recreations in the park with a Crockett era homestead. Also trails along the Nolachuckey River with a good place to launch a kayak or canoe. We camped at Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in a Motorhome.

Poole Knobs COE, La Vergne, Tennessee

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

87 campsites, many are pull-thru and about 20 are waterfront. Only two shower houses each with two showers for men and same for women. The shower houses and an additional rest room are all uphill from the lake area and the dirt paths to them are muddy slip-n-slides when it rains. Our hitch dragged getting up the steep gravel drive to our spacious level site. Many waterfront sites appear to be very challenging to get a level setup as they slope in all directions. Paved interior one-way road was easy to navigate. Quiet shaded campground on a COE lake. We camped at Poole Knobs COE in a Motorhome.

233 FHU sites with 20 pull-thrus in a city park with lots of available activities. Mostly wooded campground with closely packed shaded sites. The park has a separate water park, golf course, tennis courts, ball fields and a year around ice rink. There is a paved bike path that goes into downtown Decatur. Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson State Historic Site, Wetumpka, Alabama

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Small mostly wooded campground at the junction of the Tallapoosa and Coosa Rivers. The campground consists of a large circle around an open field surrounded by woods. The inner sites have a good view of the sky for satellite reception. There is an 1830's cottage that serves as museum and park office. There is a display at the site of the first fort as well as a recreation of of the 1751 fort next to the campground. Most interesting to us were the pair of replica Creek native American homes. On the downside the rest rooms are in serious need of renovations. The men's showers were partially collapsed and two of the four were closed. We camped at Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson State Historic Site in a Motorhome.

Gulf State Park Campground, Gulf Shores, Alabama

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

This is our favorite state park of all the states we've visited. There is so much to do that we can't get it all in during a short visit of a few days. There are paved walking/jogging/ bike paths that wind thru the back country or connect you to Orange Beach or Gulf Shores if you choose. There is a great huge beautiful beach on the Gulf with a fishing pier, a smaller swimming beach on Shelby Lake near a zipline, golf course, tennis courts, volley ball, dog park, swimming pool, nature center, etc. A great place for families. Sites are spacious but open so you can see what all the neighbors are up to. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Small shady campground with full hook-ups and a new rest room in state park right on the Suwannee River. Boat launch has small dirt parking lot next to launch. A playground and hiking trails are the only attractions other than the river. A very quiet and peaceful place to stay. We camped at Suwannee River State Park in a Motorhome.

Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park, Keystone Heights, Florida

Date of Stay: May, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed in Sandhill camping loop that has a paved road and is more "big rig" friendly than the other two loops. Our packed sand site was very large and we had good satellite tv reception as well as good Verizon. The large park has a nice hiking path with a staircase down into the cool ravine as well as a swimming beach and kids playground with picnic pavillions. The dump station is near the end of the road next to the lakeside (no lake view) camping area. We camped at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park in a Motorhome.

Large field behind Marathon gas station with several old single-wides and various campers off to the sides, with the transient full hook-up area in the middle. Close to I-10 with easy in and out, pay in cash at the gas station. Burger King a short walk across the street. O.K. for an overnight stop while traveling the interstate. Paul B. Johnson State Park, Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Date of Stay: April, 2018 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful grassy treed setting on Geiger Lake. Roads and sites are paved with concrete patios for concrete and wood picnic tables. The campground needs some maintenance as many picnic tables are broken, showers and toilets are decrepit and the grounds have a lot of torn up muddy areas. Even with these drawbacks we enjoyed staying here and would return. We camped at Paul B. Johnson State Park in a Motorhome.
