Hall County Park, Grand Island, Nebraska

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

One of the nicest, best-maintained county/city campgrounds we have stayed in. For a one-night stop, we don't need a FHU site, so a concrete-paved, 30/50 A electric site works just fine for us, especially during a crowded Memorial Day weekend. The space between our site and our only next-door neighbor was at least 30' and the lawn between us was immaculately groomed. Although our site was separated from a railroad track only by a fence and trees, there were no trains during our time there. A two-lane RV dump was located on the exit road from the campground. We camped at Hall County Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The Hall County Park is located directly south of the Stuhr Prairie Pioneer Museum. If you are traveling with elementary school-age children, this is a must-see attraction. Period-dressed re-enactors populate the shops in Railroad Town, including a blacksmith, tinsmith, seamstress, general store clerk, newspaper printer, and many more. You can watch them making hoseshoes, tin cups, and ladies hats, buy candy or lunch, visit the livery stable, and the feed mill.

Rincon Country West RV Resort (55+ park), Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This very large park was nicely landscaped and generally well-maintained, with more activities and clubs than we could sample in only a week. We intentionally scheduled our stay to coincide with the Gem & Mineral Show (for me) and the park's spring Craft Show (for my wife). Our site, however, was much too narrow for our fifth wheel and 3/4-ton truck. The truck parking space between our concrete patio and the adjacent park model was so narrow that I had to fold my driver's mirror in and still scraped the tires on the raised patio. We finally moved our trailer back against the electric and water posts and so we could park in front of the trailer. We nearly ran over the sewer hookup trying to fit the trailer between it and the patio. Plus the narrow street and the palm tree trunk next to it made backing in very difficult. So, our site was less desirable than the other park facilities, although the clean, well-maintained laundry building was conveniently located just across the entrance road. We camped at Rincon Country West RV Resort (55+ park) in a Fifth Wheel.

Winter Haven RV Park (55+ park), Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Nightly rate reflects one week's stay in a "premium" (wide) site during the first week of the Tucson Gem & Mineral tent shows and included all utilities. Weather too cool and rainy to use the pool or jacuzzi and the other activities were more focused on the permanent mobile home residents than on the relatively few RVers. So, we were a little disappointed in our ability to take advantage of the amenities. Very well-maintained park, but we are not likely to return. We camped at Winter Haven RV Park (55+ park) in a Fifth Wheel.

Santa Rosa Lake State Park, Santa Rosa, New Mexico

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

We had a partial hookup, back-in site on the west side of the A loop in a completely full campground. But our reservation was for a back-in site on the east side of the loop, directly across the road from my sister's pull-out site. However, when we arrived, our site was occupied by a travel trailer that did not check out when scheduled and actually stayed two more days. Fortunately, the campground host was able to move us to a walk-in site that was longer than the site we had reserved. We camped at Santa Rosa Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Sibley Lake (USFS), Dayton, Wyoming

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Surprising that this wonderful Forest Service campground hasn't been reviewed for more than a year. It is just off a U.S. highway, has a scenic lake with fishing, has numerous hiking/cross-country ski trails, and has water and ELECTRICITY! Only 20/30A power, but air conditioning isn't generally needed at this very shady, higher altitude campground anyway. Threaded water hydrants are scattered through the campground and each site has a power post, picnic table, and fire pit. The pit toilets were as immaculate as any I have ever seen and had no odor. We even met a couple who have celebrated their anniversary at the same Sibley Lake campsite since 1999. But for the reservation fee and lack of an RV dump station, I would have rated this one a "10"! We would definitely camp here again. It is a long uphill climb using US 14/14A when heading west or east. US 14A heading west was easy with our diesel exhaust brake. But a gasoline RV could have braking issues in either direction. Westbound RVs on 14A have "brake-cooling" pull-outs and runaway truck ramps, but eastbound RVs have only scenic overlooks for brake cooling. An RV driver must be able to use lower gears on the downhill grades and go slow to minimize braking. If you can smell your brakes, you need to stop immediately! We camped at Sibley Lake (USFS) in a Fifth Wheel.

West Lake Campground, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Beautiful, roomy, well-spaced, 15/30A electric site but at too high a cost, even with the Federal Senior Pass. $23/night for a USFS campground with no RV water fill (despite having a threaded water faucet right in front of the restroom) and no dump anywhere in entire town. We were told by the private contractor campground host that we had to go into town and buy water from the town water supply at the post office! After doing that, we found out that you can fill up a water container from the campground water faucet, carry it to your RV, and fill the tank manually, you just can't use a hose to fill it. Apparently, the hoses might cross-contaminate the water supply? First time I have ever heard that despite RVing in 33 states, including Alaska, and 6 Canadian provinces! Interesting that the campground hosts don't have to do that, just the "guests." You can take the hiking path around the lake to the "supermarket" on the opposite side of the lake. Doesn't have much in stock, but would do in a pinch. We camped at West Lake Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Lazy Acres Campground & Motel, Riverside, Wyoming

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Our back-in W/E site was on grass, not gravel, and backed up to the river. However, it was very close to the site next to us and backed up to the highway bridge as well. So, it was not very private and was very noisy due to all the logging trucks on the highway. But, after the evening rain shower, it had only one small puddle near the front corner. Many of the back-in sites farther from the highway seemed to be filled with seasonal RVs. Dump was convenient and had a threaded water hose to connect to our black tank flush. The very helpful office manager who checked us in was one of those seasonal workers because owner who lives on-site, was busy running for the Wyoming State Senate. We camped at Lazy Acres Campground & Motel in a Fifth Wheel.

Oasis RV Resort, Amarillo, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

Our go-to RV park in Amarillo where we have stayed multiple times. Our latest two stays were in January and February going to, and coming from, a trip from Denver to Florida. The pros: all paved with asphalt, concrete, and gravel; level sites with well-placed utility hookups; very sturdy restroom buildings that can be used as tornado shelters; individual private bathrooms with a toilet, sink, and shower in each; and immaculate maintenance. The cons: west of Amarillo so exposed to constant wind; very little shade (it's the High Plains, so understandable); and a long way from town and any shopping or restaurants. We will be back! We camped at Oasis RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake Sweetwater Municipal Park, Sweetwater, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

Strange campground, but with W/E sites for $15/night, it was worth a stay just to run the electric heater and the furnace on a windy, very cold February night. And the cottonwood and oak trees around the edges of the campground helped reduce the constant north wind. The sites were fairly widely spaced, but each power post/faucet had two sides--one on gravel and one on grass/weeds. We picked the grass side of our site because it was a little more level, but we could still put the truck on the downhill side because we weren't unhooking the trailer. This would probably be a great park for fall or spring camping with its two campgrounds, a lake for fishing and boating, a marina, a golf course, and a general store. There was some noise from the nearby highway and there were very few OTA TV stations. But for us, it worked well as a brief stop on a long, cold Texas plains night even though the price was just raised from $10 to $15/night on Jan. 1, 2018. We camped at Lake Sweetwater Municipal Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Kerrville-Schreiner Park, Kerrville, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

This was our second stay at this former state park campground and we knew enough to get a Deerfield Loop FHU site down the hill from our previous W/E site. The only difficulty is having to check in and get the gate code in the smaller, cramped, riverside section of the park, then turn the RV around and cross the busy road to the larger, more spacious section of the park. But, being right in town, close to relatives, shopping, and restaurants, this park couldn't be any more convenient or practical for our stay. We will very likely stay here again in the future. We camped at Kerrville-Schreiner Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Indian Point RV Resort, Gautier, Mississippi

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

Way off the Interstate on a long paved entrance road, so very quiet except when the full-time residents cranked up their monster trucks. Used the old, but well-maintained laundry, which was very busy due to the number of long-term snowbirds/residents who occupy more than half the sites. The on-site restaurant was closed the day we were there. Good cell and slow WiFi service, but only used OTA TV while there. This place looks like a very old, private, lakeside summer resort that has been expanded to include an RV park and boat/RV storage. We camped at Indian Point RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Summer Breeze USA Conroe (formerly Country Place RV Park), Conroe, Texas

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Raining and very muddy during our stay, with standing water outside our trailer, which was perched on two narrow concrete tire strips. We shared a utility post on our FHU site with our very close neighbor on the driver's side, so had to use a 50A adapter to our 30A power cord. Like our neighbor, most of the sites were filled with seasonal or permanent RVs. We used the small laundry facility and the glass storm door (the only door) would not close properly, so it was very cold and there was no place to sit in there anyway. Due to the cold, I had to load the washers, then go back to the trailer to get warm. We would not stay here again for the price they charged us. We camped at Summer Breeze USA Conroe (formerly Country Place RV Park) in a Fifth Wheel.

Big Lagoon State Park, Pensacola, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $27.00
Overall Rating:

The park was full because it was a weekend, so we got one of the last 2 sites for a 30-ft RV. The site was difficult to get into due to the truck across the one-way road sticking out too far. But we had a wide, concrete-paved, W/E site right next to the modern, clean restroom-shower building and it was screened by bushes on one side and by the boardwalk to the restroom on the other. There was obviously a lot of pedestrian traffic on the boardwalk, but we still were able to open our rear picture-window shades in our relatively private space. Big Lagoon SP is a great location for visiting the spectacular National Naval Aviation Museum, Ft. Barrancas, and the historic lighthouse, all at Pensacola Naval Air Station. We also enjoyed visiting the wildlife viewing areas within the state park. And the park was very convenient to US 98 without having to go back through Pensacola when we headed west toward Mobile. The price includes the reservation fee averaged over the price of a 2-night stay. We camped at Big Lagoon State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Acadiana Park Campground, Lafayette, Louisiana

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

The weather was rainy and the campground was wet and muddy, with signs warning of potential flash flood danger. Shaded, paved, fairly wide, W/E sites were relatively level, but our electricity didn't work correctly. Fortunately, the box for the adjacent empty site was near enough that we switched to it and then the power worked fine. Many of the sites had "reserved" signs on the posts, but no one showed up to use them during the night. So, we suspected that many other sites may also have had unrepaired electrical hookups. The dump was conveniently located at the campground exit. We camped at Acadiana Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Sopchoppy City Park, Sopchoppy, Florida

Date of Stay: February, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

DO NOT use GPS to find this place; ours tried to take us down a narrow, CLOSED road. Use Google Earth to locate it or just stop at city hall, as we finally did. There are no internal park roads, you just drive across the grass to any available grass site and the manager will stop by to pick up payment (he lives in the park). We camped in a tree-shaded, FHU site next to the fence and the street to the park, but there was little traffic noise. For the price, it was the best bargain of our 5500-mile trip. We camped at Sopchoppy City Park in a Fifth Wheel.
