About Judy Birchland

We lived full time in our Rv for five years until cold and health required we slow down. We spent another five years going south for the winter. We now live in stick house in Manitoba and health limits our ability to travel much so we are getting to know our local area.

Turtle Crossing Campground RV Park, Brandon, Manitoba

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here last June while a relative was in hospital. We were back for some follow up tests and another doctor's appointment. My first impression was WOW! Have they ever done a lot of clean up since the last time I was here. I commented in my review back then that I would have given them extra stars but for lots of dead wood from the flood and incredible rough roads. They have obviously been working all summer fixing that. Just before we arrived they had heavy rains so things were muddy but our campsite was fine. There were still some potholes and rough spots in the road but few and far between compared to last time. We had a back in site this time because we asked for a site with shade. It was spacious and they have privacy fencing. The forecast was for hot sunny weather. We got a lovely shady site under mature trees and their shade was much appreciated. The disadvantage was the hookup was at the very back of the site and our regular hose didn't reach. We had forgotten the long hose we usually carry at home but no issue since we were only there two days and we just dumped at the convenient dumpsite on the way out. Overall a wonderful stay. We enjoyed long walks along trails near and in the campground and saw many birds and wildflowers. We will come again. We camped at Turtle Crossing Campground RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Turtle Crossing Campground RV Park, Brandon, Manitoba

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This park was totally destroyed by flooding a few years ago and they are rebuilding it. The new build is very nice with big spacious lots available. Our pull through was the size of some really fine COE sites in the southern US. There are many trails and walking places. The setting is out in the country and there was no traffic noise, some railway noise in the distance. The campground has a large shallow natural dish pool for bathing and pretty sluggish prairie creek with a foot bridge over it. The rating would have been much higher except for two things. The flood wrecked many trees in what was once a riparian woodland and the stumps and wreckage are depressing and will likely take decades to come back. Not the fault of the owners of course. The roads are an absolute nightmare of pot holes. The owner was working on the roads while we were there so hopefully that situation will be fixed soon. Going in and out was a game of dodge the potholes and a lot of teeth shaking. We were there because of a family emergency with a member in hospital and we were unable to plan our stay. The owner was exceptionally supportive and understanding about the situation and most helpful about our inability to observe standard check in and check out times. Electric, water and sewer outlet were all in one spot in the middle of the site. We camped at Turtle Crossing Campground RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Brandon is a small city. On Victoria and 11st E there is one of the nicest and biggest fenced dog parks I have ever seen. It is about a ten minute drive from the campground. Moving around the city stick to 18th street and 1st street for north south travel as the railcard and river block most roads. The campground is very close to a large mall complex with a Walmart and restaurants.

Winnipeg West KOA , St. Fran├žois Xavier, Manitoba

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This park was destroyed in flooding a few years ago and has been revamped including an encircling dike with a trail on top. The new design means big long parking spots. Sites are generally close together but about normal for a KOA. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Everything in our site worked and there was excellent phone reception and the wifi worked very well. There was no cable but we were able to pick up CBC and CTV by antenna. The downside to this campground is it is right on the Trans Canada highway so the road noise is loud all night long. This is an upside if you need a place to stay while visiting Winnipeg. In spite of the road noise, this is out in the country in a bend of the Assiniboine river so there is a lot of wildlife and birds. The small pool was clean and warm. Kids seemed to enjoy the playground and splash pad. There is a lot of variety in sites from really big suitable for huge rigs to teeny tiny tent sites suitable for a small two person tent arriving on a bike. There are a few seasonal campsites for people who leave their campers there all summer and come out weekends but most people are transients just passing through on the way to somewhere else. The dog park is a decent size even for our large dog which is very nice. I have heard fishing is excellent for local river species and we saw a place for easy river access while out walking our dog. Penny discount on ESSO gas for campground guests. We camped at Winnipeg West KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Blue Springs State Park, Clio, Alabama

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

This park is old and has open culverts of cement and the roads are really narrow and hard to navigate. Almost all the sites have what looks like a sewer hook up but only a few actually work so ask, don't assume. We almost dropped our truck in a two metre deep culvert invisible under a layer of leaves. Cement ditches on the narrow roads made backing in problematic. The overhead canopy is very thick and the park is dark and absolutely pitch black at night. I took my dog out for a nighttime walk and we were followed by three loose dogs first night. Second night this did not happen. Shower was clean and hot. It was too cold to try the springs. We camped at Blue Springs State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There are alligators here so watch you dogs and kids. Some sites are right on the water and low so choose a site over 18 to be up higher and safer if you have dogs and small children.

Twiltley Branch COE, Collinsville, Mississippi

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $13.00
Overall Rating:

Absolutely loved this campground. Out campsite was gorgeous. The place was empty so we were the only ones there. The lake was beautiful! The individual campsites are a bit close and they roads are narrow making backing in a bit of challenge on some sites. We stayed in the Loblolly section. The sheer number and types and kinds of birds was incredible from an osprey eating a fish in a tree in our campsite and herons to chickadees, wrens to duck and grebes. We camped at Twiltley Branch COE in a Travel Trailer.

Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area, Minden, Louisiana

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $10.00
Overall Rating:

Gorgeous campground with huge sites. Shower was lukewarm and the bathrooms were not very clean. We never saw anyone like a staff member. Someone did come and empty the garbage cans. Most folks there were fishing and the fishing is apparently very good. We took a long walk down to the boat dock and across the little bridge to walk the upper dike. Lovely place for hiking. Don't use the shower. No matter how long you run it, it never gets past cool. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

There is a short but steep hill right at the entrance to campground that you have to navigate to get in. There are only two sites with sewer and you need those to also get the WIFI. They are normally reserved.

Fort Cobb State Park, Fort Cobb, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

We really enjoyed our stay in this campground because we landed in the middle of goose migration and the weather was lovely. I would give the place a 9-10 except for the fact that the park with full of this little desert sticker ball things that were everywhere. This results in us picking sticks out of our rugs, shoes, dog, and clothing for weeks later. Except for that the park was wonderful. We camped at Fort Cobb State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Wellington KOA, Wellington, Kansas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

We don't use KOAs very often but we needed a nice clean place with full hook ups and a laundry and we were tired and cold. As usual, that big yellow sign looked good. We had a nice two day stay to get caught up. The laundry was clean and well equipped. The doggy park was a decent size. We had a nice walk along the trail that leads back to their water treatment pond. The nice man at the front desk was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Our dog cut through her tie and he came and told us right away. Well worth the stay. The premium sites (which we did not stay in) are extra nice with beautiful patios and all sites were nice and long. We camped at Wellington KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, Kearney, Nebraska

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

If you read the campground website they describe the campground as open year round and having shower and restrooms. In fact the showers and restroom are closed. There is water and a working dumpsite. There are very few camping sites and they are narrow and all back in. It looked like it would be very nice in warm weather. We camped at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Farm Island Recreation Area, Pierre, South Dakota

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

We arrived in late November and we never saw a single employee at any time. We registered by telephone and the person doing the registration could not tell us anything about the park. The washrooms were closed except for vault toilets. Water was available at the dump site which was open. There were exactly three other campers. There is a lovely little lake that was partly frozen over. We saw lots of animals and birds especially Canada Geese. The campground is no hunting but there was shooting going on that sounded very close. The bike paths and beach area looked like they wold be very nice if the weather had been better. Overall we really liked this park and would go again but I do wish there had been some sign of some human who was in one way in charge. We camped at Farm Island Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Minot / Swenson RV KOA, Minot, North Dakota

Date of Stay: November, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This was one of those events that could have been a disaster but turned out well. They had a hydrant break and the site we had reserved was part of a large ice rink. The owner stayed late to meet us and see us safely settled in another campsite. I like the KOA. The dog park was big enough for my dog to play. The showers were hit and the place was spotless. Not many places open year round in North Dakota. The nature trail was nice. We had deer and rabbits come right up to our trailer. We camped at Minot / Swenson RV KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Sioux City North KOA, North Sioux City, South Dakota

Date of Stay: March, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This is one of the last KOAs open on a trip north and so has become a regular stop for us. We arrived on a Friday evening and paid for one night. Due to a winter weather advisory we went and paid for a second night the next morning. We arrived in pouring rain. The place was wet due to the rain but being largely gravel the wet was shallow and there was very little mud. They have a nice doggy park next to the pool that is big enough that even our big dog could actually run. We really appreciated that. Utilities were properly located so that it was easy to hook up and the site was nicely level. Staff were super friendly and helpful. For a KOA the sites were on the large side. It was easy to reach right off the interstate. We got a sit right behind the main building so we did not hear as much traffic noise as we have on previous stops here. it is a little higher than some KOAs but they have a frequent visitor card so you can get a free night after three stays and a weekend for free after five days. We will be going back that way on our next trip south so we will use our free weekend then. They had a nice looking kiddie park and activity area that makes me think this would be a great stop for families with kids. We camped at Sioux City North KOA in a Travel Trailer.
