Hacienda RV Resort, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

This big-rig friendly park is easy-on/easy-off from I-10, very clean and well-maintained. Interior roads are paved; and sites are long pull-throughs, small-sized gravel, and mostly level. Many sites have fencing, trees and shrubs for extra privacy. There are smaller back-in sites around perimeter of park. Park offers WiFi, cable TV, and a long, fenced, gravel dog run. There are many more amenities that we didn't use, since we only stayed overnight. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Hacienda RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Tombstone RV Park and Campground, Tombstone, Arizona

Date of Stay: February, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This is a clean, well-maintained campground, which is big-rig friendly. It is worth the short 2-mile drive (or you can ride their shuttle) to Historic Tombstone. RV parks in town looked very tight. Good gravel interior roads and sites. Short-term sites are long, mostly level pull-throughs, which are fairly roomy. There is a fenced, gravel dog area, a large swimming pool and laundry. Dirt trail (ATV road?) behind camping area was good for walking my dogs. Owners are friendly and helpful. No OTA TV reception or AT&T service, though Verizon worked OK. We would stay here again. We camped at Tombstone RV Park and Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Picacho Peak State Park, Picacho, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Pros: This is a clean, picturesque campground nestled in the foothills of Picacho Peak; a short distance from I-10. Good, paved interior roads; spacious, paved sites (some pull-throughs, some back-ins) that are mostly level. This is a very good campground for hiking and dog walking with mountain views, rock formations, large Saguaro and other desert plants. Cons: There is electric only (no water at sites) yet the camping fee is the same as State Parks with water and electric. The restroom/shower facility was clean, but unheated, with no hot water (at least in the showers I tried). If you don't hike, there is not much to do in the immediate area. We would stay here again if passing through the area. We camped at Picacho Peak State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Lost Dutchman State Park, Apache Junction, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is probably my favorite campground in Arizona, in the foothills of the awesome Superstition Mountains. There are good, paved interior roads; spacious, mostly level, paved sites; with impressive mountain and desert views. Campground is clean and well-maintained. There are easy hiking trails within the Park, and trails up into the Superstitions for the more adventurous. Shopping, restaurants, etc. are only about 5 miles away, in Apache Junction. The campground was full the whole time we were there, with quite a few in overflow. I'd recommend a reservation well in advance, at least in the Winter. The only negative I saw is a shortage of restroom/shower facilities - only two buildings for 130-plus campsites. If you're not self-contained, this could be a problem. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Lost Dutchman State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Catalina State Park, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

One of the best State Parks we've visited; with good, paved interior roads; paved, level sites with plenty of room in between, and views of the Santa Catalina mountains. Great park for bicycling and hiking, or just walking your dogs. Campground is quiet with a rural feel, even though shopping and restaurants are minutes away. Reserve well ahead to get a site, at least in the Winter months. The only improvement I would suggest is that they mark the campground loop roads with the site numbers, instead of just "back-in sites" and "pull-through sites". We weren't the only ones who made several trips around the loops looking for their site. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Catalina State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Blue Goose Thrift Store, about 5 miles north on Oracle, is a find. Very clean store with lots of "treasures" and no yukky thrift-store smell. Run by volunteers, its only open 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Kartchner Caverns State Park, Benson, Arizona

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $35.00
Overall Rating:

This is a pretty State Park campground, with mountain views and hiking trails. There are good, paved interior roads. Sites are paved, spacious, and mostly level, with some shade. This is a great park for walking dogs, on trails or roadsides. We would stay here again. We camped at Kartchner Caverns State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Elephant Butte Lake State Park, Lions Beach Campground, Elephant Butte, New Mexico

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

This review is for the Lions Beach campground, which has lake view sites. Good, gravel interior roads; spacious, level, back-in sites with paved patio and covered picnic table. The water level was low, so the lake view wasn't real pretty, but we saw bunnies, cute little quail and a road runner. Some sites require reservations, so its best to call and reserve, even in the off-season. We would stay here again. We camped at Elephant Butte Lake State Park, Lions Beach Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Lake Colorado City State Park, Colorado City, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is 5 miles off I-20. Good paved interior roads and spacious sites, some pull-throughs and some back-ins. Our site (#41) was a long, gravel, pull-through with a lake view, and a covered picnic table. We had to do some leveling, but most sites appeared to be fairly level. We would stay here again. We camped at Lake Colorado City State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Cowtown RV Park, Aledo, Texas

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $37.00
Overall Rating:

This is a large RV park, with easy access off I-20. There is one wide, paved interior road, the others are gravel. Sites are long, level pull-throughs, many are paved, some are gravel. Sites are fairly tight, but not too bad - plenty of room for slide-outs. There is an escort to site, cable TV, and trash bins placed conveniently throughout park. There are 3 good-sized, fenced dog runs with grass, which my dogs enjoyed. We would stay here again. We camped at Cowtown RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This is a very well-maintained campground, with nice landscaping and plenty of amenities, including an on-site bar & grill. Paved interior roads and fairly roomy, level sites. Our Site (#13) was next to a small, fenced dog run, which was convenient. We would stay here again. We camped at Twin Fountains RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Loretta Lynn's Family Campground, Hurricane Mills, Tennessee

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is high up on a ridge in the woods, with steep, narrow paved roads. Most sites are pull-through, some have paved pads, some are gravel. Sites are fairly tight, and many are unlevel, be sure you have blocks. The girl at check-in seemed disinterested; just handed us a map and told us to "pick a site". We made 2 swings around the loop before finding a suitable empty site; an escort to site would have been helpful. There was working WiFi, but no cable or OTA TV reception. Park seemed clean, though some buildings and roads are in need of repair. We came here to see Loretta's home & museum, which was worthwhile; but we would probably not camp here again. We camped at Loretta Lynn's Family Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Douglas Headwater Campgrounds, Sevierville, Tennessee

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This is a really nice TVA campground on Douglas Lake, similar to a Corps of Engineers campground. Gravel sites are mostly back-in, there are some long pull-throughs. Sites are roomy, mostly level, with shade and grass; many sites have lake views. There is a boat launch, swim beach, hiking trail, neatly mowed grass areas, and a camp store that sells soft-serve ice cream. This campground is a short drive from Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, etc.; yet is a quiet getaway from all the traffic mess. The only negative is the dump station; which is set up to dump on the way in, rather than the way out; making the sharp turn was difficult for our big rig. Other than that, this is a great campground; we would definitely stay again. We camped at Douglas Headwater Campgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

Wytheville KOA, Wytheville, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

Easy access off I-81, but far enough road noise wasn't a problem. Good gravel roads, and gravel pull-through sites long enough we didn't have to unhook. Sites had grass in between, and weren't too tight. They had a large fenced dog park with grass, which my dogs enjoyed. Cable TV and WiFi worked well, and they even delivered pizza to our site. We only stayed one night and didn't have time to check out their many amenities, including a bowling alley. We would stay here again. We camped at Wytheville KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Luray KOA (formerly Luray RV Resort Country Waye), Luray, Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

This is a clean, well-maintained campground in a pretty rural area; a short drive from the town of Luray and Shenandoah National Park. There are good gravel roads, and roomy gravel sites with grass and trees in between. Most sites have mountain views, some have concrete patios and attractive landscaping. There is a large central green space for kids to play; and a large fenced dog area with shade trees and benches. I would give this campground a "10" except for very slow WiFi and no Cable TV. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Luray KOA (formerly Luray RV Resort Country Waye) in a Fifth Wheel.

Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $58.00
Overall Rating:

A large KOA campground next to Harpers Ferry National Historic Park. There are lots of amenities: large pool, mini-golf, camp store, cable TV, large laundry, fenced dog area, etc. Sites vary, from small gravel sites in the trees, to large pull-throughs. We have a large rig, so chose a premium site; $58 reflects "buy 2 nights, get 1 free" price. Even so, the site was difficult to pull into, with narrow roads and tight turns. There were deep tire tracks in the nicely landscaped area where others also had difficulty making the turns. This is a nice park in a convenient location, if you don't mind maneuvering your rig around the tight turns. We camped at Harpers Ferry / Civil War Battlefields KOA in a Fifth Wheel.
