Gordy Road RV Park, Bacliff, Texas

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

While dense, this small park provides back-in parking on flat concrete long enough for a 40' motor home and toad. Most of the residents are long term and well-behaved; try to guess which units are FEMA trailers still being used after 2017's Hurricane Harvey. A small pool is provided. Sites do not have individual picnic tables. Wifi was fast and sturdy. The park is close to attractions such as the Houston Space Center, stores and restaurants. We thought Gordy Road RV was a good value at $40 a night for a municipal-area park. We had to wade through a 4-page application and 5 pages of rules (with fines running from 50 to $500) on arrival. We camped at Gordy Road RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Don't miss the Houston Space Center tram and museum. Great for kids, too. At T-bone Tom's, a restaurant in business for more than 30 years, my T-bone was thin, tough and had no crust. My partner gave a very good grade to Tom's chopped beef sandwich. Gilhooley's dive bar had very fresh oysters and shrimp.

Right off I-10, so good park for overnight stay. Long gravel sites very open for satellite dishes; we didn't have to unhook. Cash only. We camped at Eagles Landing RV Park in a Motorhome.

Ho-Hum RV Park, Carrabelle, Florida

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

We got a Gulf-view drive-in site at this old favorite, named for the expression, "Ho Hum, another day in paradise." Any damage from 2018 Hurricane Michael has been repaired and the long pier for fishing and lounging was in fine condition. We camped at Ho-Hum RV Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Fresh oyster joints abound. The ancient but well-kept Gibson Inn, 15 miles down the road in Apalachacola, has a nice restaurant which was one of the few open on Easter Sunday. Oysters were fresh and the duck spring roll was tasty. Driving West on U.S. 98 takes you through downtown Mexico Beach, with lots of damage from Hurricane Michael still evident a year later. Only slabs or pilings remain from many homes.

Sun Roamers RV Resort, Picayune, Mississippi

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $34.00
Overall Rating:

This is a former KOA park with an Olympic-size pool and long, gravel pull throughs. Satellite TV users will need to pick their sites carefully among the many trees. Most customers appeared to be long term weekend or vacation residents. Wifi worked fine. Park workers cleaned out a drainage stream before a heavy rain. We camped at Sun Roamers RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Delaware Seashore State Park, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $44.00
Overall Rating:

This park is just south of Rehoboth Beach, DE. It has 403 full hookup sites located on both inland sides of the Indian River Inlet. The Inlet suspension bridge hovers in the background but traffic noise was subdued. Sites are open, allowing easy access to satellite TV. There is no WiFi. An attendant said there were written rules somewhere but none were presented at check-in. Anglers cast along the seawall and the Atlantic Ocean beach is an easy walk under the bridge. Try to park to place jacks on the pavement rather than sand. We camped at Delaware Seashore State Park in a Motorhome.

Atlantic Oaks Campground, Eastham, Massachusetts

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

This long-time favorite park was as busy as ever a week after Labor Day, although some Cape Cod restaurants were already shutting down at the end of the tourist season. Arnold's, a great lobster and seafood place a short walk from the campground, was open only on weekends (and still was cash only). Van Rensselaer's Restaurant, a fine choice up the street, was open full-time. The bike path out the back of the park offered a 4-mile ride to Marconi Beach. Site K-2 was chosen because it is one of the few spots where satellite TV is available. Spots are pull-in, back out. The oaks bounced acorns off our fiberglass roof all week, an interesting phenomenon. We camped at Atlantic Oaks Campground in a Motorhome.

Beaver Dam Campground, Berwick, Maine

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $50.00
Overall Rating:

This inland park was chosen as a jumping-off spot for day trips to southern Maine and Portsmouth, N.H. A reverse polarity condition was detected by our electrical protection equipment at the first assigned site, #20. Management readily agreed to a site change to #13 (another 30-amper, at a slightly higher price). It passed the electrical tests and was surfaced with gravel rather than sand. It did take several boards to level our motor home. Rules took up entire page of tiny type - estimated to be more than 1,200 words - and did not mention that guests were charged fees. WiFi was very good in the near-empty park. The day after Labor Day the swimming pool was already closed. Clam Chowder at Union Bluff Hotel in York Beach was as excellent as it was when we tried it a couple of years ago. The Oar House in Plymouth provided a fine dinner. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

A hike to Balancing Rock in the Orris Falls Conservation area was a fairly easy 3 ½ miles long. The Falls were just a gurgle. A tour of the Plymouth Moffatt-Ladd House included a lot of history, and a tree dating back to the Declaration of Independence. A farm market down the road from the park had lots of fresh produce. Some prices were higher than at a weekly farmers' market near City Hall. A Hannaford super market is nearby.

Kiptopeke State Park, Cape Charles, Virginia

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

This pleasant park on the Chesapeake Bay has hiking trails, a small beach, and fishing and boat launch facilities. It is on the southern tip of the Virginia shore, a few miles from the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnels. In the camping area, center rows are open for satellite TV but are first come, first served. Reservable places are along the edges and have lots of trees. All sites are back-in. There is no WiFi but a decent Verizon signal. A Food Lion, new in 2018, is the only significant market nearby. We camped at Kiptopeke State Park in a Motorhome.

My Brother's Place Campground, Houlton, Maine

Date of Stay: September, 2018 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

Older park with lots of grass between sites. Utilities were fine and site was satellite useable. The fishing pond had microscopic trout, as far as we could tell. The Park is very close to a US/Canadian border crossing. Check out local activities: the Potato Festival had lobster (and potatoes) for $15 with a band playing afterwards with locals dancing along. Chicken the next night at the Fire Department Fundraiser was tough. Hiking and bike paths available. The hiking trails at Aroostook State Park were pretty tough for older folks. Check out the world's largest scale model of our planetary system, starting with the formerly furthest planet, Pluto, at the Houlton Visitors Center. Nearby Hartland, New Brunswick, had "the world's longest covered bridge" but it was closed to automobile traffic. Gourmet restaurant Wine 'Til Nine is only open Thursdays and Fridays but well worth a visit for a night out. We camped at My Brother's Place Campground in a Motorhome.

Balsam Woods Campground, Abbot Village, Maine

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

This crowded campground exists primarily for children -- with a pool and lots of activities -- and motor-oriented adults with ATV parking and access. Cost is demand driven; our site went from $40 to $48 depending on date. Using your air conditioning is an extra $2/day. The walking path we tried was not well maintained. Exit SR 6 at Pond Road. Ignore any computer instructions that have another route (particularly via Prides Loop; you will end up in the pond). We camped at Balsam Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Great smoked ribs at Spring Creek BBQ in Monson. Elliotsville Road leading to the Little Wilson Falls hike is found north of Monson, not in town at the post office as some directions indicate. The hike is mild to moderate, intersects the Appalachian Trail, and the waterfall is pretty. The last mile of the road in to the hiking site is rough.

Stonehurst Golf Course & Trailer Park, Moncton, New Brunswick

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

This large family-oriented, camp has lots of grass for kids to play plus the usual playground facilities. The pool has only limited hours (it closes 4:30-6 p.m., presumably for the dinner hour) and is surrounded by barbed wire. A golf course and driving range are on the edges of the property. Staff is very helpful and knows which sites are satellite friendly. Cost is converted to $US. Lots to do in nearby Moncton: don't miss seeing The Bore (a 3-6' wall of water rushing up the very top of the Bay of Fundy funnel) which announces tide changes. Best viewing is from downtown Bore Park. Arrive at least 15 minutes early; the actual Bore often varies from predicted arrivals. We camped at Stonehurst Golf Course & Trailer Park in a Motorhome.

Harbour Light Campground, Pictou, Nova Scotia

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

Water view sites are available for short-term campers although seasonal residents occupy most of the park. Ours had 30-amp electricity. This large park has a pool; propane is available; and there is a long path to a beach. Cost converted to USD. Slavishly following GPS instructions may take you on the narrow, bumpy streets of downtown Pictou; better to follow Church Street through town. Alternative: at the roundabout into town, take the exit for the Prince Edward Island Ferry and turn east on Three Brooks Road just before the ferry's ticket booth. Nearby New Glasgow has large grocery, hardware and other stores. Fresh fish is available at the Visitors' Information building by the second roundabout, but not on Monday or Tuesday. The pulp mill referred to in an earlier review is miles away; we smelled nothing with the wind blowing our way. We camped at Harbour Light Campground in a Motorhome.

Bras D'Or Lakes Campground, Baddeck, Nova Scotia

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

The campground is indeed on the lake, but the closest RV to the water is about 100 yards away and water views are very limited. Some sites, including ours, had electrical and sewer problems which were attended to after some nagging and repeated electrician visits. Utilities were at the very back of most sites. Road noise most noticeable from Trans Canadian Highway at sites 1-8 and 26-31. Satellite TV was limited by the location -- east of 61-degrees west, we could only pick up SD channels. Cable TV worked well. The WiFi was slow but rock-solid even when the park was full. Price is converted to $US and seemed high for an older facility. Baddeck, three miles away, is equidistant from popular parts of the Cabot Trail but most popular features were a 1-2 hour drive away. On the eastern part of the Trail, the Skyline hike is spectacular at the end but had far too many hikers on a summer weekday, particularly since half of the loop was closed. It was a 1½ hour drive away. There is a rail trail for bicycles but the nearest junction with parking is an hour away. Other than a couple of pizza places, restaurants in Baddeck featured little other than seafood. Some of the route to the western part of Cabot Trail was rough, but not as bad as the roads up the eastern side. We camped at Bras D'Or Lakes Campground in a Motorhome.

Northumberland Provincial Park, Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $33.00
Overall Rating:

Pull through sites 15-19 and 22-26 at the Northumberland Provincial Park had 50-amp electricity and lovely views when parked towards the eponymous strait. The last 3 in each row may get better satellite reception (or we may have been too far east to get HD channels with a U.S. dish). A few mosquitoes appeared in the early evening. Price is in $US. The favorable conversion rate made the Park a real bargain. Vehicle washing was allowed. The We camped at Northumberland Provincial Park in a Motorhome.

Park is near the ferry to Nova Scotia. A great little fish shack, Wood Island Seafood, is a left turn just before the ferry ticket office. The Confederation Rail Trail is nearby for bicyclers. Red Point Provincial Park, Souris, Prince Edward Island

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

This Provincial Park is a great jumping off spot for day trips such as the East Point Lighthouse. Terraces mean a lot of sites have good views of the Northumberland Strait. Technologically, it is getting near the edge: cell service was spotty, electricity was 118 volts with 30 amps; WiFi was wimpy except near the office (and cost $2 a day per device); and our non-Canadian satellite dish could receive only SD channels. We camped at Red Point Provincial Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The small town of Souris, 8 miles away, had 2 mediocre grocery stores so stock up near Charlottetown. Some fresh seafood was available for picnic eating or takeout at The Lobster Shack and from a guy selling out of the back of a truck southeast of downtown. Julie's Place had $8 men's haircuts. Avoid the crab cakes at Rick's Fish & Chips. A bike path from near the port featured a 6-mile ride to Harmony Junction (where there's nothing except an intersection).
