Santa Fe Skies RV Park, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

The bad - windy, park is mostly gravel/dirt. The good - a LOT! Gorgeous views. Neighborhood around campground is nice. Close to freeway and shopping, but no noise. Quiet. Lots of bunny rabbits. Feels like you are camped out in the desert. Close to town. Did I mention views? And bunny rabbits? Clean facilities and campsites. And views? Wow, wow, and WOW! We camped at Santa Fe Skies RV Park in a Motorhome.

Carlsbad RV Park and Campground, Carlsbad, New Mexico

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

It was a decent campground considering the location. The bad - the campground is not pretty - just gravel and a few trees. Lots of full timers. This is one of those campgrounds where the pull through sites hold two RV's nose to tail. The good - the full timers are simply workers. Despite the worn appearance of their RV's, they are residents, this is their home, and they make for nice neighbors. the campground is clean and well maintained. It's right next to the highway but it's very quiet. In summary, it's not a resort. If you are an itinerant worker, it's a nice place to stay. For tourists, it's a fantastic overnight place (not sure why you'd stay for more than one day) We camped at Carlsbad RV Park and Campground in a Motorhome.

Alamogordo/ White Sands KOA, Alamogordo, New Mexico

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Technically, there's nothing wrong with this park. The facilities and campsites are very clean and well maintained. The staff is outstanding. It's just a depressing park in a depressing town. The entire campground is gravel and the only landscaping are trees which are bare sticks in the winter. The surrounding neighborhood is dumpy. You hear train horns in the night and they are close and LOUD. Dogs bark all night in the nearby houses. For an overnight stay, it was tolerable. I'm sad to say all of this because the staff is absolutely wonderful and the park is very well maintained. I guess the saving grace is the low nightly rate. We camped at Alamogordo/ White Sands KOA in a Motorhome.

White Sands - amazing. Space Museum - poorly done, tired, old, run down. But despite all that, worth an hour or two. It's not that expensive. The Albertsons is one of the best we've ever been to.

North Shore Campground, Chester, California

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

I wanted to give this park a good review. It's gorgeous and located in a dense, shady forest right on the lake. Even campsites "far" from the lake have a lake view. I liked the shade because it can get hot during the day. But my issues were: - narrow, one lane roads. I think any unit over 30 feet would have a difficult time maneuvering. Also, no place to remove your tow vehicle. - Dusty. Miserably dusty. The soil has a fine, talcum-powder like consistency. And it's deep. Think of camping in 4 inches of talcum powder. It sticks to your shoes, you track it inside, it blows when there's the slightest wind, and it covers your car and rig. Even though it was gorgeous outside, we spent all our time in the rig with the windows shut tight. - Campsites not level and again, hard to maneuver due to small roads. - Steep roads. One reason why all campsites have good views of the lakes is they stair-step up the very steep hillsides. But again, that means steep roads.

TOW VEHICLE WARNING - unhook your tow before leaving the freeway. From the west, do it in Chester. From the east, use the rest stop at the top of the hill. We camped at North Shore Campground in a Motorhome.

Tucson / Lazydays KOA, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: January, 2018 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

I'll keep it short - great campground, you must stay here, and read all the other reviews for details (everyone seems to hit all the high points). But here are some issues for you to consider: -The sewer connections are far back on your site, so you may need up to 30' of sewer hose. Plus, if you have hose such as a Rhino hose, with a screw in adapter, it will not screw in due to the design of the (otherwise excellent) sewer connections. So bring a brick (alas, no big rocks in this campground). - The pet and hammock sites are along the main roads. - Only two (but excellent) laundry/pool areas, so most people have a long walk (or drive) to get to them. - Note the sites are gravel, not paved, but you do get a paved picnic area and paved area to park your tow. The gravel is level and clean. - IMPORTANT TIP IF YOU WANT SHADE - They offer unique, "shaded" campsites under a solar array. But from November-February, the sun is at such a low angle, these sites are in baking sun all afternoon. So much for paying a premium for shade! BUT...the rows of (cheaper) sites just to the north of the solar array catch the shadow from the structure. So if you camp there, you get the shade but don't pay a premium! - Park is safe, with controlled access, and quiet. We camped at Tucson / Lazydays KOA in a Motorhome.

Furnace Creek (NPS Campground), Death Valley National Park, California

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

The NPS recently renovated this park, so the roads, campsites, and bathrooms are new. The best part? They added full hookup sites that are very long. Any sized motorhome and tow will effortlessly fit. Some sites have Tamarisk trees or bushes but the full hookup sites have none. But that's not a problem because you'll have A/C and your awning will open on the north side of the RV (you'll have plenty of shade). Visitor center is a very short walk. About a quarter mile walk to the store. Great desert views. Far enough from the road that it's quiet. You get a very nice, aluminum, picnic table and a fire pit. We camped at Furnace Creek (NPS Campground) in a Motorhome.

LVM Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $81.00
Overall Rating:

Absolutely first class RV resort. Beautiful grounds. Perfect sites. Clean bathrooms. Great laundry with new machines. Great location with shopping, gas, RV and car washes nearby. Quiet and safe. Lush, tropical landscaping. Easy to get on the freeway to see the strip. Only quibble is that they charge a $10 a day electrical fee, which is odd, since you must pay it, therefore it should be part of the base price. (my cost includes this fee) NOTE - they only allow Class A RV's to camp here. Seems a bit snooty. We camped at LVM Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

I used to live in Las Vegas. My best tip: the entire city is full of fantastic restaurants that are equivalent to or even better than the ones on the strip. But they are MUCH cheaper. So don't eat on the strip and don't freak out if Yelp sends you to a high rated restaurant in a strip mall in some remote suburb. For example, there's a great Hawaiian "plate lunch" restaurant about a block from the park. High quality, generous portions, at an affordable price.

Calico Ghost Town & Campground, Yermo, California

Date of Stay: March, 2017 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

The main campground is nestled inside two canyons within walking distance of Calico Ghost town. Good views of the beautiful mountains. Quiet and peaceful; campground was mostly empty when we were there. Hookups/utilities worked fine, bathrooms very clean. So all of these bumped up my rating. But... this campground does have some problems. Mainly, the campsites are uneven and not level. If the camp is full, there may be privacy problems as the sites are crammed in. Most of the non-hookup sites are on dusty dirt and accessed by dirt roads. Almost no trees, so it's all dirt, dust, and rock. For a county park campground, I expect paved, level sites. So, to sum up, I would have given this camp a 4, but considering the wilderness feel, the quiet (mainly because the campground was mostly empty), and the scenery, it bumped up my rating. And, considering the other camping options in Barstow, which are in town or next to the interstate, this place is pretty nice. NOTE - This campground has a second section for the OHV crowd. That campground, while recently upgraded, is all gravel and is out on the alluvial fan. You can see the town and freeway so it doesn't have the "nature feel" We camped at Calico Ghost Town & Campground in a Motorhome.

Sunnyside County Park, Foster, Oregon

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

Wow! What a pleasant surprise. We had a huge campsite with plenty of grass, under the trees, and close to the lake. It's quiet and beautiful. I rarely rate a place a 10 but this deserves it. Only negatives are that it's only 30 amps and no sewer connection, but the place is so nice, who cares! We camped at Sunnyside County Park in a Motorhome.

Redwood Meadows RV Resort (formerly Hiouchi RV Resort), Crescent City, California

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

Nice spacious campground and only a few minutes walk from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. It's a sunny, open campground, which is nice because this area tends to be dark and foggy (the state park campground, while wonderful, is really dank and dark). What's bizarre about this park is that you parallel park your rigs instead of backing them in (not difficult, even with a big rig). What's nice about that is that everyone's door faces a central green space and you have plenty of room for your tow. The Wi-Fi is amazingly fast with strong signals. They do use a bizarre type of sewer connection (a tube sticks out of the ground and it has threads on the outside of the tube). I had to jury-rig my sewer connection. We camped at Redwood Meadows RV Resort (formerly Hiouchi RV Resort) in a Motorhome.

Secret Camp RV Park, Gold Beach, Oregon

Date of Stay: July, 2015 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

I want to say I really like this park. It's incredibly beautiful with a central park-like area. And it's quiet. The roads are gravel but not dusty. We had a 40 foot big rig and even though the roads are cramped and narrow, we didn't have any problems. And, it's reasonably close to town. But something was off. We didn't have 50 amp power (not sure about other sites), the sewer was way in the back of our site so I had to use an extension hose, and there is no laundry. But the worst part is that the sites are very close together. Many sites are V-shaped; one entrance for two campsites. We were in a W-shaped site, so one entrance for three campsites. There was no place to park our tow, so we just parked it next to the neighbor's car in the next site over. We camped at Secret Camp RV Park in a Motorhome.

Novato RV Park, Novato, California

Date of Stay: April, 2015 - $71.00
Overall Rating:

It's hard to rate this campground. The staff is wonderful and they seem to have a passion for providing service and a clean campground. But the sites are crammed together and most of the RV's are full-time residents. The positives: Great location, close to the freeway exit (you don't hear traffic), beautiful scenery if you look up at the hills, close to shopping and town, quiet, clean, level sites, good utilities, decent internet (not good, just decent), a deli onsite, picnic tables, concrete picnic pad, great staff, LOTS of information about local area. The negatives: This is a mobile home park with RV sites at the front end. Most of the RV "campers" are full time residents (but they are nice, pleasant people, not rowdy roughnecks). The sites are crammed together. But considering there are incredibly few camping options in the Bay Area, it's a decent place to stay. I would give it a 9. But if it's in a place like Redding, with multiple campgrounds that have lawns, trees, large camping spots, etc. this would rank a 3 in comparison. We camped at Novato RV Park in a Motorhome.

Trailer Villa RV Park, Redwood City, California

Date of Stay: April, 2015 - $70.00
Overall Rating:

With so few RV Parks in the Bay Area, this place isn't bad. We stay here every time we are in the area. On the other hand, I really wish there were more choices. On the positive side, Redwood City is halfway in between SFO and San Jose so you have lots of things to do within a 30 minute drive, so the location is good. The park is by the freeway, but you camp so far away you don't hear a thing. The overnight campers are put in the back of the park, near the bay so you get some views. You park on concrete pads with great utilities and it's very clean. the laundry rooms are great, with newer machines. On the bad side, It's in Redwood city so it's far from everything (yes, it's location is a blessing and a curse). It's in a depressing, industrial location. The campsites are crammed together. The internet is poor. There are a lot of full timers, but they have new RV's and new cars, so it's not like you are surrounded by transients. We camped at Trailer Villa RV Park in a Motorhome.

Marina Dunes RV Park, Marina, California

Date of Stay: April, 2015 - $63.00
Overall Rating:

Overall a nice park and from what I could see from the internet, there aren't many good options in the area. I was worried about this park being so close to the ocean that it would be windy with blowing sand. But the dunes and trees block the wind so it's very nice. You get a cozy, private campsite with vegetation between the sites, so it's private. The laundry is inexpensive and clean which is nice. The beach is a short walk away and it's wonderful. I would have rated this park as an 8 but there were three major problems - our campsite was dirty (garbage, weedy), the park is close to the freeway so there's lots of noise, and the internet is basically useless. We camped at Marina Dunes RV Park in a Motorhome.
