Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve, Santee, California

Date of Stay: November, 2019 - $65.00
Overall Rating:

I'm writing from an RV-er's perspective, but Santee Lakes is far more than a campground. What a gem of a getaway in the middle of a city! Nestled in the hills this municipal park offers opportunities for walking, running, biking, picnicking, fishing & good old relaxation! There are space(s) for group gatherings along with private event spaces. The campground/RV park offers a variety of sites that are sure to satisfy just about anyone. Leashed pets are welcome, and be mindful that coyotes are active in areas of the park. Our full hook-up site was level and had reliable power, good WiFi & adequate water pressure. The park staff & rangers are visible, pleasant & available. Note that the Verizon signal is poor at the far North end of the campground. We'll most certainly return. We camped at Santee Lakes Recreation Preserve in a Fifth Wheel.

Tucson / Lazydays KOA, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $51.00
Overall Rating:

This is perhaps the nicest KOA I've ever stayed at. As I understand it, the park is corporate-owned, so that may have something to do with it. A few of the sites with extra amenities (fireplace, pet area, etc.) are on the pricey side, but the majority of the sites are a decent value. We were under one of the "power parasols" (solar arrays), and even in October the filtered shade was appreciated. The staff was pleasant, and the grounds were clean & well-kept. The typical Tengo-managed WiFi was usable and unexceptional. Power, water & sewer were as I would expect. We camped at Tucson / Lazydays KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Hacienda RV Resort, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $56.00
Overall Rating:

What a superb park! I had booked months ago as part of a month-long trip across much of the country. A week or so before arrival, a park staff member called to be sure the reservation was correct since they had changed systems. Everything was in order, but I really appreciated the extra level of service. At check-in the staff were pleasant & helpful. Our big-rig site was spacious & level. The pads are finely crushed gravel, and are groomed between each occupancy! The utilities were fine and note that the water pressure is high, so you may want a regulator. Our pooch appreciated the irrigated green spaces. Convenient access to I-10, and I really didn't notice traffic sounds. We camped at Hacienda RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

American RV Resort, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $51.00
Overall Rating:

This is a really good base camp in ABQ. We found all of the staff pleasant & helpful. Our big-rig site was paved, level & spacious. I found their propane prices to be more than fair. I cringe when I see "Tengo-managed" WiFi, but I was actually able to get it working here. The office/store had a nice selection of gifts & necessities, and the complimentary breakfast was an unexpected bonus! We'll be back! We camped at American RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Twin Fountains RV Park, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $49.00
Overall Rating:

The park has convenient access to I-44 & I-35 on the Northwest-ish side of OKC. I-44 is very close on the north edge of the park, so some highway noise is expected. The terrain on which the park is developed slopes considerably downhill from I-44 toward NE 63rd St, so many areas & sites are terraced into the hill. Although the pads themselves are mostly level, the approach & departure for many sites is steep. Some parts of the park are spacious with others being more crowded. There are more than a few long-term guests with a mix of tidy sites and others that need some love. The park has a mix of shade from oak trees, and some sites with a view of the sky for satellite reception. The folks in the office were pleasant, helpful & informative. We had no issues with any of the utilities, and will likely visit again. We camped at Twin Fountains RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Air Capital RV Park, Wichita, Kansas

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $53.00
Overall Rating:

Nice folks in the office & on the grounds. Paved, level sites that will accommodate most big rigs. Sites are fairly closely spaced and have adequate room for one vehicle besides the RV. Water pressure is high so use a regulator. Getting WiFi connected is difficult at best, and when you do connect it is virtually unusable. Spacious but non-enclosed pet area. Looks as though most of the guests are long-term. Good stop for exploring the sights in Wichita. We camped at Air Capital RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Deer Creek Valley RV Park, Topeka, Kansas

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Now THIS is an RV Park. So many parks could take a page from these good folks. Arrival notes: If you're traveling I-70, I'd recommend using exit 364B versus exit 365. Both are usable, but 364 is a bit more RV-friendly, especially for larger rigs. Upon check-in I spoke for a few minutes with one of the managers and learned that the park is owned by a construction company. Those commercial construction roots are very evident in the park, which I happen to like. If you're looking for quaint & quirky, this is not it. All roads & pads are concrete with well planned radii to accommodate easy in & out. Power, water, sewer & WiFi were all proper. The large, clean & grassy dog park is a nice touch. I'm not a pool person, but this amenity is very nice as well. Whether you are passing through or here for an extended stay, this park is an exceptional value. We camped at Deer Creek Valley RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Kansas City East / Oak Grove KOA, Oak Grove, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Convenient access to I-70, nice folks, good camp store, multiple pet areas. Reliable power, good water pressure, better-than-expected WiFi (at least near the office). Typical KOA layout with dirt/gravel interior roads, gravel pads & what seems like somewhat random design. There appear to be more than a few long-term guests & some of those sites really need a little love. The proximity to the exit means plenty of traffic/truck noise. In my opinion, KOAs are over-marketed & deliver less-than-average value even with their discount card. This location is branded as a "Holiday", but for me it is more of a "Journey" stopover park. I'd stay again, but simply for a night or two while visiting the area. We camped at Kansas City East / Oak Grove KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park, Saint Peters, Missouri

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

This could be a 5-star park... but read on for the details. The facility overall is set on 300 acres about 3 miles South of the Mississippi River. The 140 acre lake is ideal for paddling & fishing. Park amenities include multiple pavilions, dog park, boat ramp, boat dock & a bath house in the RV park area. The park flooded in May of 2019, and was closed for repair for a few months. Thus the RV park sites have fresh, lush sod & new utilities. The sites are spacious and level. Although there are a few with concrete pads, most are "roto-mill" (asphalt/gravel). On the downside, the park WiFi is unusable, and appears to be managed by a 3rd-party. The park staff should use it just to see how miserable it is. The sewer caps are the "Footloose" self-closing design which have threads that don't fit the popular Camco & Valterra threaded adapters. This may sound like nit-picking, but those two items are oddly inconsistent with the rest of the park design & investment. I'd stay here again when visiting St. Louis. We camped at St. Peters' 370 Lakeside Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Prairie Pines Campground, Rantoul, Illinois

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is an interesting park. It was a mobile home park for Chanute Air Base which was decommissioned in 1993. Although it is technically still on the air base property, it is managed by the City of Rantoul. Our hosts were fun and friendly. The rates are very attractive. The city-supplied water had plenty of pressure & volume, and the electric utilities were clean and reliable. An unexpected bonus was WiFi performance at 2x more than many far more pricey campgrounds (and least in our site). Our site was level and offered a clear view of the Southwest sky for satellite access. There were more than a few longer-term guests evident. I'd consider this a short-term park for our travel needs. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Elkhart Campground, Elkhart, Indiana

Date of Stay: October, 2019 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

Although we've been in the greater Elkhart area many times, this our first visit for a quick stopover following some RV maintenance. Our site (and by the looks of it, all sites) are level and easy to enter & exit. A view of the southwest sky worked well for satellite reception. The WiFi was barely usable, as is so often the case. The water pressure & flow was excellent. Convenient access to I-80/90. Our site was gravel/turf and the interior roads were a mix of paved & dirt/gravel. We didn't use any of the amenities. We camped at Elkhart Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Manistique Lakeshore Campground, Manistique, Michigan

Date of Stay: September, 2019 - $60.00
Overall Rating:

Wow, just wow! This park opened in June of 2017, and is owned and was developed by the City of Manistique. Some of the sites have direct views of Lake Michigan, and the entire park has access. There are a handful of electric-only tenting sites, along with 50 concrete-pad full hook-up sites. All roads are paved. The office, bath house, laundry and pavilion are gorgeous. It is evident that a lot of thought and professional design are at play here. I can't wait to go back! We camped at Manistique Lakeshore Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Holiday Park Campground, Traverse City, Michigan

Date of Stay: August, 2019 - $59.00
Overall Rating:

Great park, great people, great times! We've been visiting here since 2010. Our stays are generally short--no more than a week or two. Location is always important, and this park is positioned to provide easy access to the entire region of wine, dunes, recreational activities, dining & you-name-it. The office has a few supplies along with ice, firewood and propane. The shower & restrooms facilities are clean, although a bit dated. The park offers both shade & sun. Water pressure is great & the WiFi is (at times) usable. If I had to pick on one thing, I'd say the bandwidth needs to be doubled or tripled. Cable TV is included and has plenty of channels. As I write this, more areas of the property are being cleared and prepared for additional sites which are sure to be of the same great quality. In summary, these good folks care about the property and the quality of the camping experience they provide. We camped at Holiday Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Hidden Ridge RV Resort, Hopkins, Michigan

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $67.00
Overall Rating:

While "RV Resort" is a commonly used term these days, the features here qualify this park. Conveniently located about halfway between Grand Rapids & Kalamazoo, there are plenty of shopping, entertainment & exploring opportunities within a short drive. If relaxing & staying on the premises is your preference you can enjoy the pool, clubhouse, fitness center and other amenities available. This is a Sun Resorts park, and as of late 2018, there is a new on-site manager. So far, very good. We found the staff friendly and effective, and everyone is quick to show a welcome wave or "good morning". The grounds & building are in excellent repair. The bath houses/showers are clean & modern. There is even a store with necessities & treats. Near-daily activities are conducted in the pavilion, as are church services on Sunday. The sites are spacious & paved with room for the largest rigs. Full hook-ups including water, sewer, 20/30/50 amp electric & cable TV are at each site. Included WiFi blankets the park. Long-term guests are metered for electricity. Speaking of WiFi, Charter/Spectrum is the provider & Tengo Internet (ugh) is the 3rd-party manager. The (free) bandwidth is limited and not what I'd consider usable in this connected world of ours. Optional for-fee-per-MAC-address-specific upgrades are available. Your WiFi extender/booster may not work in this system. Certainly not "resort grade". Water pressure and volume vary by elevation within the park. Further regarding water, it is delivered from well(s) and is extremely hard. You may consider using a water softener if staying for any length of time. Nonetheless, we'll be back again. We camped at Hidden Ridge RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.
