Morro Dunes RV Park, Morro Bay, California

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

A cute park directly across from Morro Rock and its beach. Location was ideal, with a short walk or bike ride to the shops, restaurants and marina. The site itself was a little cramped. Passengers needed to exit the truck before squeezing it into its parking spot next to the RV. Verizon was good. They only offer one small dog park and require you to use that to take care of business. We opted to exit the RV park and walk our dog along the dunes outside, where there were public garbage bins nearby. They supposedly have a recycling program...we were told to put our recycling (separated) in the standard trash barrel at the site, and the crew would separate into the appropriate receptacles, but I saw no evidence of such a system or recycling receptacles. But, we followed their suggestion. The interior roads were a little tight to navigate with a large RV, but we managed. All in all we would stay here again, although we were a bit disappointed in the weather (fog bank for entire stay). We camped at Morro Dunes RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Indian Waters RV Resort & Cottages, Indio, California

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $39.00
Overall Rating:

This is a larger RV park that apparently gets totally booked during winters and festivals. We were there in May when it was practically empty. The staff were friendly, although they have very limited hours (1-4 M-Sat, closed Sun), which we found unusual. The park was clean for the most part, except for the unused sections which needed a good weed whacker. The dog park near us was closed for the summer season, so we had to walk to the front of the park to get a little playing in for the puppy. One of the two hot tubs was closed for the season. The spots consisted of cement pads for RV and truck surrounded by gravel. The utilities are all the way in the back of the spot, so we needed three lengths of sewer hose to reach the drain. Verizon was good. They did have a recycling dumpster, and collected deposit cans/bottles for charity. All in all it was an adequate place to stay. Nothing exceptional. We camped at Indian Waters RV Resort & Cottages in a Fifth Wheel.

J & H RV Park (55 + Park), Flagstaff, Arizona

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $54.00
Overall Rating:

A nice smaller park on the North side of town on the way to the Grand Canyon and Sunset Craters. Although it is located on Rt. 89, the noise was extremely quiet (perhaps due to the terrain) at our spot (near the dog park). The staff was jovial and helpful. They do not allow smoking on the grounds (but my neighbor was jerky enough to light up). They have a limited dog run area in which they ask that you have your dog take care of business and clean it up. Verizon coverage was good. The pads are crushed gravel (it was difficult getting spikes into the ground) and clean. The only negative is that they do not offer a recycling program, which dings them a rating point. Flagstaff is an eco-friendly city, and there are recycling options downtown that we leveraged (look by REI), but it really should be handled locally at the RV park. All in all it was a good place to base yourself while exploring Flagstaff, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, etc. We would stay there again. We camped at J & H RV Park (55 + Park) in a Fifth Wheel.

Tucson / Lazydays KOA, Tucson, Arizona

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

First, this is NOT associated with the Lazy Days RV dealer, which happens to be next door. This is one of the nicer KOAs we have been to. Clean, nice pools with hot tubs, decent fitness room, game room, mini golf, onsite BBQ restaurant (which was not that bad) etc. etc. lots of things to do, and nicely laid out. The spots are spacious, and they sometimes have different amenities. Some have two-level picnic structures. Some have personal dog parks (aka a 10x10 fenced-in area with a faux fire hydrant and shade structure). Some are underneath the solar array so they are shady. Some have deluxe picnic tables. The site diversity is interesting and welcome. The main dog park is a nice size, but there are burrs/stickers in the corners, so our dog was constantly collecting them while chasing balls. They have a single stream recycling program :-) Borrow a bin and leave it curbside and they take care of the rest. Verizon signal is very good. There are citrus trees at almost every site, and the office has a picking basket that can be borrowed to collect lemons, grapefruit, the occasional orange, or whatever you can find in the trees. All in all an excellent option when visiting Tucson. I would definitely stay here again. We camped at Tucson / Lazydays KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Barrio Bread. Must Go There. Find out which days they are making Jalapeno Cheddar bread, and buy it. Buy two...the first will be gone before you get back to the RV. Actually all of their bread is amazing, and worth a stop. Arrive 15-20 minutes before doors open.

Hacienda RV Resort, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

Although it is close to the highway, it was surprisingly not noisy. The sites are back-to-back, so your neighbor's front door is opposite your front door, separated by a wooden privacy fence. And, your back slides are very close to your other neighbor's back slides. In addition, there is really not much room to park your truck next to your 5th wheel. It was extremely tight, and during the day we opted to park near the clubhouse instead of trying to squeeze it into our spot. There are some spots that appear to be roomier or end spots without neighbor issues, I might ask for that. Then again, it seems like a majority of the guests were there for one night and not much longer. The clubhouse was clean and the staff courteous. The hot tub was a nice feature. Verizon signal was good. Proximity to White Sands was convenient. There were activities for the visitors if you wanted to partake...we did not. The "dog run" is also the drainage ditch, so it is quite wet after a good rain. But, still a plus. There was no recycling program, which was disappointing. I would stay here again if I were passing through. We camped at Hacienda RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Lost Alaskan RV Park, Alpine, Texas

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a perfectly adequate RV park, with friendly staff and decent gravel sites. IMHO, this is probably the best place to stay in the Chihuahuan Desert region, from a park perspective and a location perspective as well. Trips to Big Bend, Marfa, the McDonald Observatory or other destinations are easy to make from Alpine, which is the largest city in the largest county in the largest state in the continental USA. The grounds were clean...the only complaints were that there was no recycling program (except saving deposit cans only, for 4H or the girl scouts or something like that) and the long-term residents tend to let their dogs poop along the treeline and never clean up after them, leaving land mines for the unsuspecting. The dog park could is quite small, which is weird given the amount of unused space in that section of the park. We would definitely stay here again when we return to the Big Bend region. We camped at Lost Alaskan RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

San Antonio / Alamo KOA, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: April, 2019 - $52.00
Overall Rating:

A decent KOA. Sites are not roomy but not too close. Well organized campground with friendly staff. A nice bike path runs right past the park, which was also good for dog walking. There are lots of burrs/stickers in the area, so our dog was constantly covered in them. Uber to downtown was convenient (a little far for a bike ride IMHO). Verizon signal was good. There was a small pool that we did not use, but it looked clean and the kids were having fun in it! I would definitely stay here again if I wanted to visit downtown San Antonio. French Quarter RV Resort, New Orleans, Louisiana

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $105.00
Overall Rating:

This is all about Location, nothing else. The campground is basically a walled-off parking lot with pavers for RV pads and a little bit of grass separating the sites. Walking distance to the French Quarter through a relatively safe parking lot and past a police station. But, the Route 10 highway is pretty much right above the park, and it is quite noisy. The nearby businesses start their construction work at 7am, so expect early mornings after a late evening. Verizon coverage excellent. Did not try wifi. All spots are noisy, but some are noisier than others. I would stay far away from the highway on the greenway side (e.g. stay in spot 1,2,3 or 38,40,42 across from them). Staff is friendly and they accept mail. There is a small pool and hot tub (broken during our visit) in the courtyard, along with a very basic exercise room. Again, this is all about location. There are two very small 'dog walking patches' in the park. Fido did not mind. The campground is adjacent to the Lafitte greenway bicycle/jogging path, which is convenient and takes you out to City Park. Location, location, location. We camped at French Quarter RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

Live Oak Landing, Freeport, Florida

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $65.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here in a pricey "Premium Plus" Pullthrough site for a few days. This site 17 (the first spot as you drive into the campground) was not really large enough for our 38' fifth wheel and truck and definitely would not fit the reservation's "47-48' total length" listing. We needed to park the truck 3 inches from the RV in order to clear the roadway. Add one side awning and you maxed out the space. Other sites, including back ins, appear to be more roomy than this one. Our RV Neighbor was close but quiet. The non-campground neighbors across the street were quite noisy with screaming kids and loud motorcycles, but they were quiet at night. The campground was clean, the staff friendly. There is a nice large fenced-in dog park area. Boat launch for your toys. The clientele was a mix of permanent cabin owners, seasonal guests and transient visitors, with weekenders coming down for the fishing. The pool was not open during our stay, but the facilities looked clean. The campground layout is a bit strange. There is 1 one-way road in that takes you all the way through to the end of the park, and 1 one-way road that brings you back out, with no intermediate cutoff streets. So, if you follow the rules you always traverse the entire campground to get around. Then again, most drivers ignored the rules and either went the wrong way down the one-way or backed up. We were sad to see that there is no recycling program at this campground. So, we toted our recyclables along with us when we left. Verizon coverage was good...2-3 bars. The gulf shore beach action was easy to get to. All in all it was an OK experience. We might look at other options the next time we are in the area, especially given the cost for a tight site and lack of amenities. We camped at Live Oak Landing in a Fifth Wheel.

John Prince Park Campground, Lake Worth, Florida

Date of Stay: January, 2019 - $26.00
Overall Rating:

We have wintered here for several years. The campground is well maintained, most of the spots have ample room. Good Verizon reception and the rabbit ears pick up many local stations. They have Wifi but we do not use it (I hear it is acceptable). As part of the John Prince Park, there are miles of biking/running trails, lake access, a great dog park, kiddie playgrounds, tennis/basketball/soccer/petanque courts, fit trail, etc. The adjacent airport is one of the busiest primary flight training airports in the country, but very little noise after dark...it is always nice to watch the planes, and not a nuisance to me. I-95 is a mile away and early morning traffic can be heard, as is the occasional overnight freight train. We prefer to stay further from the lake, as the bugs can be bothersome close to the lake. They are not a problem further inland. Some of the spots can be tight or have a palm tree blocking the awning, but most are more than adequate. In the winter, Quebec French is the most common language in the park, with activities including daily petanque, weekly line dancing, horseshoes, happy hour, and other community activities frequented by the very friendly Canadians. The park staff is helpful, and mail/packages can be received at the office. The grounds crew do a very good job keeping this county park campground clean. Although in general I hate South Florida, for family reasons I keep returning, and think it is a very nice park. I will definitely return. We camped at John Prince Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Jetty Park Campground, Cape Canaveral, Florida

Date of Stay: October, 2018 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed here for a week. The beach is right next to the campground, and cruise ships sail past periodically (an amazing sight). The spot had plenty of room, but maneuvering in a big rig can get tricky through some of the narrow streets (but still manageable). Verizon coverage was good. The staff were friendly, and accepted mail/packages for us. The grounds were a little overgrown, and landscaping did not seem to be a priority. Kennedy Space Center is nearby, as is a twice-daily casino cruise (practically within walking distance of the park...definitely bikeable). Dogs are not allowed on the beach, but there were plenty of places to walk within the campground. There is no dog park or similar amenity. We would stay again, especially if there happens to be a launch. We camped at Jetty Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Grouchy personnel, small lots, overflowing dumpsters, nickel and dime you at every step, trees encroaching RV paths, pine sap covers your RV by the time you leave. I only stay here because I have to. Cable TV sucks, Internet virtually unusable, you pay extra if you have a washer/dryer, you cannot use sewer totes for non-sewer sites, you must use their honey wagon for a fee.
