Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, Mccalla, Alabama

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

This is a large state park with many local residents getting away for the weekend. Since we arrived on a Sunday afternoon, many were pulling out leaving the park only half full. Our plan was to stay a couple of days to see the iron works. Unfortunately we discovered that the historic attractions are only open on the weekends leaving our reason for staying a moot point. The park is heavily wooded, making satellite TV reception spotty. Some sites had a small window for their portable antenna, but most did not. There is no over-the-air TV reception. We were only able to get one of the three satellites needed for complete reception. The sites a level gravel with P/W/S connection close. Glad I ran the fresh water before hooking it up because it ran with dirt and rust until it finally ran clear. I suspect this was due to it's lack of use in some time. The park needs some TLC due to the condition of the interior roads. We ended up leaving after one night due to our disappointment. We would not stay here again. We camped at Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park in a Motorhome.

Southern Star RV Park, Van Horn, Texas

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

This is a basic overnight park along I-10. Nothing exceptional but a good place to get some rest after a long day across Texas. The sites are level mostly gravel with good hook ups. Our site was the one closest to the freeway, but surprisingly we had very little traffic noise. It seems that most of the parks in Van Horn are close to the freeway so your choices are limited. The park has a lot of semi-permanent residents who are very quiet. We travel in a motor home and would stay here again. We camped at Southern Star RV Park in a Motorhome.

Ameristar Vicksburg RV Park, Vicksburg, Mississippi

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here for an overnight while heading west with easy access from I-10. We (I) hooked up in a raging rain storm with with the potential for severe weather. The reception staff suggested we take shelter in the office if the weather got worse; luckily it didn't. Check in was fast and efficient. The park is across the street from the casino (not very walkable) with a shuttle available. Only took a couple of minutes for it to arrive. All sites a concrete with Water /Power /Sewer close by. Don't pull too far forward otherwise you'll need a sewer hose extension. Most sites were level, but a few had a definite list to the passenger side. We were traveling in a motor home and would definitely stay here again. As is typical of most casinos, it was smokey but not too bad. The buffet is only open Friday and Saturdays so if you want a meal out, the cafe is your only option. We camped at Ameristar Vicksburg RV Park in a Motorhome.

North Crest RV Park, Waco, Texas

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $45.00
Overall Rating:

Pros: easy access from I-35, when the owner arrived, he was pleasant enough and offered to assist with the hook up, we explained the encounter my wife had (see explanation below) and he apologized and indicated we were welcome to try another park if we were unhappy, the site was concrete and he showed us where to placed the satellite antenna for best reception if we wished to use it, P/W/S was easily accessible although we only used water and electric for our overnight stay. Cons: the woman manning the office while the owner was out was rude and insisted my wife climb the stairs to the second floor to use a credit card even though my wife's disability made it difficult to climb stairs, the fresh water hook up was on the ground and within 6 inches away from the sewer connection - not a a good situation, the $45 charge was high for compared to other parks we stayed in during our travels. Not sure if we would stay here again. We travel in a motor home. We camped at North Crest RV Park in a Motorhome.

Twin Creek RV Resort, Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

A smaller park about 5 minutes from downtown Gatlinburg. The park is below the main road so the noise is not too bad. Interior roads a paved and manageable for larger rigs. Sites are concrete that slope rear to front but easily leveled. Power/Water/Sewer are close along with cable. Due to the amount of trees, satellite reception may be impossible depending upon the site. Cable gets most of the popular channels. There is a pool and small playground. The one major con is the fact that the stay has a 3 night minimum even though the park was only half full during our stay. We camped at Twin Creek RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Traffic in Gatlinburg is terrible and the parking lots fill early. Highly recommend catching the trolley that stops at the entrance of the park. Either the blue or yellow lines will take you in downtown and run every 30-35 minutes. Cost is 50 cents per person except from June 15 through August there is no cost.

Anchor Down RV Resort, Dandridge, Tennessee

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $80.00
Overall Rating:

This is a destination park explaining the cost. The interior sites are less expensive and those with lake views and the highest cost. Lots of families here to enjoy the many attractions for the kids: water park, beach, play areas, etc. The park is on a large lake for various water sports. The place is immaculate with paved interior roads wide enough for the largest rig. Sites are all concrete with patios and some with fireplaces. Power/Water/Sewer connections are well placed and close enough to the RV that no extensions are needed. The onsite store is well stocked for most RV needs. Recommend following the park's directions from I-40 so as to avoid the 7 miles of winding road from the town of Dandridge. We came Hwy 92 from the Bush's Baked Bean factory in Chestnut Hill (well worth a visit) but had no problems on the roads. Con: given the cost, would have expected an escort to our site. Ended up driving around a little to find it. We camped at Anchor Down RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Cane Creek Park, Waxhaw, North Carolina

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

In the area visiting family in Monroe. This county park is the closest and was quite a nice surprise. 30 minutes to Monroe and 15 to Waxhaw and the closest grocery shopping. The park does have a small store with ice and drinks. Ice is as cheap as in Walmart ($2.00/10 lb bag). Since it's a county park alcohol is officially prohibited. There are a total of 120 sites with about half gravel and the other concrete. Almost all sites have a slight slope front to back, but bad enough to get level. Even on the busy weekend, it is surprisingly quiet. During the week, it's even quieter. Forget getting satellite reception because of the many trees, but with the beautiful setting, who cares. All sites are back in with plenty of room to maneuver. The park is secured at night after 9:00 pm with an automatic coded gate. We would definitely stay here again. The large lake and beach will be a hit with the kids or adults, as well as 2 playgrounds for them. Boats are allowed on the lake and fishing is supposed to be quite good. Non residents pay $6.00 per day for power, water and sewer. We camped at Cane Creek Park in a Motorhome.

CreekFire Motor Ranch, Savannah, Georgia

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $47.00
Overall Rating:

Just south of Savannah with easy access from I-95. Pros: wide paved streets with plenty of room and concrete pads. Each site had a patio with picnic table. Unfortunately it poured rain and we did not have a chance to use it. Staff led us to our site and explained the area and the things to do. Warned us about the alligators in the lake, especially with the dog. Cons: no trees at the sites and for the price I would have expected to have cable. Got the usual over the air TV stations, most of which were intermittent. Because it was raining so hard, could not set up our satellite. The concrete pad was narrow so that you had to position the MH door adjacent to the patio or you'll step into dirt, or in our case mud. We would stay here again. We camped at CreekFire Motor Ranch in a Motorhome.

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, Lake Buena Vista, Florida

Date of Stay: June, 2019 - $154.00
Overall Rating:

The park is everything you would expect from a Disney property. Our price was high due to our late reservation and the site was a premium 45 footer; the last site available or our dates. Other sites are not this expensive. I've always wanted to stay here and now I have. The campground has 28 loops, each with about 30 sites. The buses run regularly to a y place in the park. Our site in the 400 loop was walkable to the Settlement and boat to the Magic Kingdom. Most folks further away rented golf carts for $59 per day. Every site is spacious surrounded by trees so you hardly know you have neighbors. Satellite reception may be spotty due to trees but the cable has just about everything. Although this is Disney World, it's surprisingly quiet. Would definitely stay here again, just longer. There is a disconnect area on the way in to the park. We camped at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground in a Motorhome.

Gulf Beach RV Resort, Biloxi, Mississippi

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $75.00
Overall Rating:

Since this was a holiday weekend, the place was packed. We got the last site available anywhere in the Biloxi/Gulfport area. The cost and my value rating reflects the site being a premium 45 foot site which was larger than we needed. Once the weekend ended, we had the place to ourselves. Even though the park was full, there was no loud partying. The interior roads are paved as are the sites. Our back-in was by the dog run, but was not a problem. It is a small park but right across the street from the beach. Kids will love the beach access or the onsite pool. We camped at Gulf Beach RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Whispering Meadow RV Park, Westlake, Louisiana

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $42.00
Overall Rating:

This seems like a fairly new park that is still under expansion. The sites are all level concrete, as well as the interior roads. Access is easy to maneuver with the connections right where they should be. Since the park is new, there is no shade. Check-in was quick and the owner very friendly , even helping us get to the park after we made a wrong turn and ended up in downtown Lake Charles. The highway outside the park is quite busy with some road noise, probably worse for us since we had the first site in the park closest to the road. We camped at Whispering Meadow RV Park in a Motorhome.

Travelers World RV Resort, San Antonio, Texas

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $46.00
Overall Rating:

The trip to the park seemed to go through a neighborhood that seemed a little "sketchy" but upon arrival at the park it was clean and spotless. It is well maintained and quiet, even though it was a holiday weekend. The weather was quite warm and the pool was well used. The store is well stocked with the basic needs for travelers. The staff provided us with directions back to I-10 that were much easier than those we used with Garmin upon arrival. We would definitely stay here again. A great place for an overnight traveling across the vast expanses of Texas. Easy access from I-10 with little noise from the freeway. Rawlins KOA, Rawlins, Wyoming

Date of Stay: July, 2018 - $41.00
Overall Rating:

A little pricy for a park so close to the freeway. However, there was little road noise. The park is outside of town. Sites are gravel and mostly level; I had one tire off the ground, but not too bad. This is a good overnight spot with little else to do. No pool, small playground for kids and a splash pad not being used. Laundry was small but clean. There is a TA truck stop across the freeway if fuel is needed before heading out.
