This is a huge wide open field of concrete slabs with a half dozen rusting and sagging ancient mobile homes scattered hither and yon. The park is located in a declining area and approached via a short road past a fenced car lot patrolled by two rottweilers. That would be clue number one. We stayed only long enough to identify an alternate RV park, I did not feel safe nor did I feel safe leaving my RV there. - Ric R

We read the last review and decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, this place is more like the March 2009 review. This is more of a full time trailer park than an RV park. It is very close to the road, has no office or facilities and is in a more run down part of town. If you don't want to stay at Wal-Mart and need an overnight stop with water and sewer, then I would cautiously recommend this place. Our water did not work. - Sherylyn

We were reluctant to try this park because of the previous review. We are glad we came here anyway. Owner is friendly and apparently has been working VERY hard. Looks like all the spaces have new large concrete pads. Electric connections look new. Sites are large and level.Big-rig w/towing access. Plenty of room. Clean w/no garbage and no homeless and no bums. (we have seen parks like that). The $20 rate is full-hookups w/no discount. Looks like owner has worked hard to clean everything up. We would camp here again. Did not see a sign for park on main road so be careful not to miss it. - petersoldan

The most difficult part is getting To the park down small country roads. Once there you'll find a fine little city park with recreation areas, ball fields, creek with fish and a rope swing and enough bike trails to make anyone happy. Camp 'sites' are not really designated but rather areas in the wooded area behind the ball fields to pull into, in what ever manner you wish to reach the hookups and miss the trees. If you call for a 'reservation' you will probably talk to the city mayor - who runs the canoe company at the front of this city park. WiFi was Excellent, I never did find the laundry, there are no 'facilities' (I'd rather use my own bathroom anyway) and grocery and fuel are a 10-15 minute drive to the new Walmart. TV reception was good but I had no t-mobile or AT&T phone service. We stayed more than one night and were able to 'negotiate' a rate of 5/$80. I really liked the park setting of this campground even if getting here was a challenge. Small country roads would Not be feasible for a really big rig, but Most motorhomes and trailers will like it once they get here and be in a good location for visiting the Birmingham area. - SailorGolf

***Out of business*** This campground sold out to Loves Truck Stop and is no longer in business. Loves has demolished the campground and is in the process of turning it into a parking lot for 18 wheelers. - Luv2rvbig

Okay overnight stop for us, though it's a little past its prime. Friendly, helpful owner. Wi-Fi works well (after resetting router), good cable TV. Gravel roads in fairly good repair and our gravel site was "levelable" with a bit of lumber. Some have park model utility set-ups, but ours was standard RV style. Shaded, but pretty noisy. Kind of hard to find. It's behind the Love's truck stop. Apparently, the State has plans for the right-of-way, so the sign is pretty much invisible. Call park for directions. Wouldn't make a point of going back, but okay for a night. - Sonic
Jun 2010 - $27.00
Very friendly host. That was the best park of this park. Many rundown permenent sites. We had a long pull through so we did not need to unhook, and we are about 55 feet long. It is tight getting through the park. It's about 1/4 mile off interstate, so a good overnight stop. There is a nice small pool. Cable TV was good. Way overpriced, even with the Good Sam discount. If this were a half price campground, we might consider staying here again, just for an overnight. They are building a Loves truck stop that backs right up to the park. This could add to the already loud noise from the interstate. - BLT101

After and terrifying drive off the Interstate, we arrived after dark. I walked up to the office and was encouraged to pay cash. We were led to our unlevel, graveled site. The sewer inlet was above our waste discharge outlet so we did not hook up our gravity drain waste line. After a long walk to the "bathhouse", we were very disappointed in the condition: a broken seat on men's toilet, one women's stall, no toilet paper, and generally pitiful conditions. The park appeared to have mainly long-term residents. - Devil Anse

Owners were very friendly and seemed to work hard to keep the park clean. This park does seem more like a trailer court with mostly permanent renters. - deechurch
Feb 2017 - $15.00
Tired old campground, badly in need of a sprucing up. However, the setting is lovely, with mature trees throughout the campground and a pretty lake adjacent. Using an address of 11 Austin Road, Helena AL worked better than the County Road 93 address in my GPS. Unless you like backing up, don't drive up to the office. There is no turnaround. Park on Austin Road. - Gord0

As others have said, it's a big parking lot with hookups. We stayed for one night on the way from Little Rock to Atlanta. Given the road construction on I-20 in Birmingham and related detours, this was not really much out of the way. Called on the way to reserve. Long hold time before talking to an agent. Reservation agent not at all familiar with park, and even though we asked if our site was satellite friendly, we ended up next to a tree which blocked the signal. Spaces are not long enough for our 38' MH plus toad, so we had to detach. Space was barely wide enough to squeeze toad next to MH. No one on site to check you in - wouldn't surprise me if people just showed up and parked without paying. Roads are easily navigable. Utilities were fine, plus there's a cable TV connection but no cable TV. Spacing is tight but there was hardly anyone there so not an issue. Low hanging limbs on the roads to the park but we didn't hit any - we are 12'10" high. At $44 per night, quite overpriced for what you get. - mtmsf
Aug 2019 - $40.00
This park is a big parking lot. But if you get next to an end cap, you have a grassy area for chairs or dog walking. Had big gym with indoor walking track. Has an amazing splash pad and playground for little ones. Close to everything. - Couch9748
Jul 2019 - $43.00
Fabulous location. Everything nearby, Costco, Walmart, Restaurants, etc. The camping is basically a parking lot. All asphalt with a few islands of trees. There is a brand new kids playground and splash pad located adjacent to the campground. Water, 50 amp electric, and sewer was fine. (Although the sewer was uphill from my port as it was on a concrete median). Wi-Fi was good and free (not secure). Good signal from both AT&T and Verizon. - rolltide19

This is a large state park with many local residents getting away for the weekend. Since we arrived on a Sunday afternoon, many were pulling out leaving the park only half full. Our plan was to stay a couple of days to see the iron works. Unfortunately we discovered that the historic attractions are only open on the weekends leaving our reason for staying a moot point. The park is heavily wooded, making satellite TV reception spotty. Some sites had a small window for their portable antenna, but most did not. There is no over-the-air TV reception. We were only able to get one of the three satellites needed for complete reception. The sites a level gravel with P/W/S connection close. Glad I ran the fresh water before hooking it up because it ran with dirt and rust until it finally ran clear. I suspect this was due to it's lack of use in some time. The park needs some TLC due to the condition of the interior roads. We ended up leaving after one night due to our disappointment. We would not stay here again. - 2sunkid
Apr 2019 - $32.00
We stayed one night on a Monday so the park was less than 1/3 full. We could ride our bikes, visit the furnaces, and use the showers with no lines or crowds. The beauty of the wooded setting is lessened with all 200 campsites and cabins are full. No WiFi. We found many Birmingham TV stations with only our antenna. Showers had privacy, hooks for clothes, and unlimited hot water with strong pressure. Sewer hook ups were available in other sections of the park. - WNC Traveler
Nov 2018 - $21.00
This park does not take reservations. It's first come first serve. We were given the option to drive around and pick our site. Sites are very close together. Our fee was $21.25 for water and electric. While driving through the park we noticed dump station was across the creek in Camping Loop 3. It was so disgusting we did decide not to dump when we left the next morning. The scenery is pretty and the fall colors were beautiful. We did not get to see the museum as it was already closed. The campsites could use some TLC. The park map we were given at check in was pretty useless. - MelindaK

This is an oddly laid out park, probably because it is so hilly. The restrooms and laundry are old and rusty. - mountainfan
Feb 2017 - $27.00
We stayed for the first time at Oak Mountain and were not impressed with our site nor the blaring of radios being played outside as we were trying to relax by the campfire. We stayed at site A5 and were on the road. Literally! I would not recommend this site for anyone with small children. This site is listed as a pull through but it is nothing more than a pull over area. We only saw the park ranger once the entire time we were there. We were very disappointed with the entire experience and will not be back.... - Sharrell

My wife had a doctor's appointment at UAB medical center and we stayed here for three days. The site we had was shaded and level with 30 amp service. We enjoyed our stay but were unable to use our satellite due to the trees surrounding our site. - Fordiesel250

Very nice short stay or overnight stop! Very clean old KOA. Staff were very friendly and location is great.
We arrived after the office had closed, we were greeted by the manager and escorted to our site. Nice heated pool, very clean restrooms and showers. We would recommend this park if your passing through or in the area. - Just Happy Campers
Oct 2019 - $45.00
This is a very average park and the only reason to stay here is that you need a FHU spot for one night. There are a large number of seasonals here but it's hard for me to imagine why. The office personnel are very young but efficient and pleasant. The CG is clean in terms of trash but everything looks worn out. The wi-fi does not work, the water pressure is low, and the guy in the back row of campers has a pit bull on a chain. - virginianola

Very unlevel site. Broken asphalt surface, Gave up on wifi. Many cable channels. Water, electric and sewer all worked ok except the sewer had to run uphill approx. 10 inches. Will avoid this place in the future. - bobber415

Another excellent COE park. This park is best for those wanting to fish, but the campsites are fine. There are two sites—wooded area and waterfront. Sites have water and electricity. Bathrooms are clean and showers are clean, heated and plenty of hot water. Getting here is a stretch—the park is well over half an hour from any town. There was no cell signal at all in the campsite—five miles up the hill you could access cell. - SandmannRV
May 2018 - $14.00
There are two distinct areas of this campground - the "river front", and the "creek side". The river front sites are right on the Black Warrior River approximately a mile downstream from Lock 17 dam. These sites are all back-in, or head-in, and most have a deck extending out toward the river. Fishing is possible, but not practical at these sites because of the shallow water and logs near the shore. However, it's a great place to launch a kayak or pull up a bass boat. The other area of the campground is up a hollow perpendicular to the river, with most campsites situated around a creek which runs down through the hollow. This area is old growth forest with a very heavy tree canopy. Sites for both areas are flat and level with concrete pads. The lengths given on the Recreation.gov website are accurate for the entire length. We stayed on site 4 on the river front. This site is situated for back-in with the awning side toward the river, but there is a retaining wall that limits the width of the site between the wall and a deck post. We were able to park a triple slide fifth wheel in the space, but could not walk between the body of the trailer and the deck post - use caution if selecting this site. Sites 3 and 7 are situated for a unit which can be pulled straight in, such as a class A or C (and still have the awning side toward the river). There are a mix of back-in and pull-thru sites in the "creek side" area. There is NO CELL PHONE coverage in the campground! OTA reception is limited to just the river sites. Satellite reception is very limited in the creek side sites because of the heavy tree canopy. Bathrooms are very clean and the showers have real mix valves - no push buttons. There is only one full bath house for the campground (37 sites). Two playgrounds, a beach with shower house, several fishing piers and a good dump station. Water pressure was very good, lighting at night was limited to the bath houses and bridges. - Bama Camper
Feb 2017 - $26.00
We have stayed here quite a few times. We love it. Quite and relaxing. Water front sites are really nice. 2, 3 and 7 are backwards so your camper faces woods instead of water. That's my only complaint. 8, 6, 5, 4, 1 are very nice level pads. Park is beautiful. FYI, if you want cell service or TV, have satellite or WiFi. That for me is great, no phones really helps you to unwind. Park is well kept. Too many logs in water in front of camp sites but not something that will keep me away. The place is beautiful. - Burchfield branch park

Nov 2019 - $40.00
Decent value for the price, BUT, was told to ask for military discount when I got there and I did. But no change in the charge. The ladies at check in were nice, but seemed unfamiliar and confused with the computer check in process. When I ask for propane bottle at check in, the lady qualified was out getting her hair done, so I left my bottle. It was finally filled and delivered to my campsite B63 at about 5:45pm. Driving in to the campground, take the main gate. The back gate road is very steep and winding and you will have to make a hard left turn very close to the gate shack. At the main gate by the equestrian sites, be very careful as the gate shack has a large overhang and can damage your RV if you get too close. The sign to the RV sites was removed when I got there (5 miles from the main gate), so be on the alert for the road. Yes, the B loop sites are very strangely numbered and not in sequence. Ours, B63, was long enough for my 34' 5th wheel and I did not need to unhook. Not sure if I would stay there again, but was peaceful during the off season. - 66 Mustang
Nov 2019 - $50.00
Had a great weekend at Oak Mountain. Great staff and great park. Busy weekend with a full campground. Roads good. All services worked great. Lots to do at the park, hiking, boating, and fishing. Only downside is that some of the sites are a little close together and hard to get into, but everything else was great. - blonsk
May 2019 - $26.00
This is a beautiful state park. A lot of amenities. The bathrooms were dated, and somewhat clean. Trail from our site down to the lake. Many swimming areas, with kayak and canoe rentals. A lot of hiking trails. Very close to Birmingham, although you can't tell. Very peaceful. Unfortunately, our site had a bunch of ants that ended up getting into our trailer. - debdana
