This park is a real gem. Located in a popular and busy tourist region, it is an oasis of peaceful natural surroundings. Sites are large and well spaced for the most part. Paved pads. 26 miles of paved bike/walking trails throughout the park. 2 miles of unspoiled ocean beach. Well maintained and clean facilities. Full hook ups. Bring your bikes! Beach is a short ride from the campground. With the trail network and bike paths in town, one can get to many places without a car. Will definitely be back! We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:
Huge state park including a golf course, nature center, large laundry room that is open 24/7, miles of well-maintained hiking and biking trails and a long pier into the ocean. Approximately 500 camp sites, easily accessible and most that can accommodate our 40 foot motor home. Many campers are long term and seasonal snowbirds that reserve a year in advance. Make you reservations early as only have 75 are set aside for weekly or nightly camping during the peak winter months. (The monthly rate is about $100 more than a two weeks stay). Pricey for a state park and note that the camping price does not include 11% lodging tax and a 15% resort fee bringing our cost to $41.69 per night with the weekly rate. WiFi is really slow so we use our AT&T cell hot spot instead...got over 30 channels with our antenna, most sites are open so satellite works fine. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

So many paved bike trails! Many TV stations via antenna. No internet to speak of, but good phone reception. Have stayed here before, and will again. Down side to monthly stay, is that they only allow it from the 1st of each month...If you show up early, you pay the daily rate. If you show up late, you need to notify them. Good people in the office, and very helpful. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Stayed here in October after our reservations in the panhandle of FL were cancelled by the aftermath or Hurricane Michael. That turned out to be a great positive. We stayed here for a week and really enjoyed the low-key atmosphere of this park during the off season. The spots were great. We had shade and the power was the most reliable I have ever seen at a State Park - much less one this size. I highly recommend this park and we will certainly return. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This State park has everything you need; with close-by Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley to fill in for everything else. There are biking/hiking trails all over the park, laundry facilities, a convenience store, pool and a golf course. We had a full hook up site that backed up to a lake within the park. Our site was spacious. For the price and location, this was an excellent value. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

After spending a couple months with family, this was our first stop on a long trip. We usually do not use State Parks but this one was beyond our expectations so we stayed a little longer than a simple stop over. It is huge and a great location. Being October, it was not full but I could see where getting into this snow bird location could be difficult. They have a fabulous pool (open and not cold) and the cycling and beach access is amazing. Everything is very clean with plenty of grass and trees to keep sites private. The area we stayed - site 161 (159 thru 161) is on a turn and very private. There are some pull thrus as well - spaced out nicely. No wifi to speak of but we used our verizon cell with great coverage. Over the air tv was local florida channels (all the majors with good coverage) also our site had good sat. view even though the trees everywhere. Nice friendly 24 hour staff - it was a busy check in but we booked one night on line (checked that no one was coming in that site for a few days) and then we paid for more days after we decided it was a good location. Great for dogs and kids too. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Huge state park with awesome recreational activities already mentioned by others. Bring bikes! Best bike trails of any park we have been in. Bring binoculars...watch the Osprey, gators and the resident bald eagles! Paved, spacious full hookup sites. Only gripes - trash dumpsters at only one spot near entrance, a long way from most campsites; no dog bags. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

We were in site 154 for 2 nights. Park has asphalt sites and we did have to level the trailer. There was no wifi at all, very little shade but foliage between sites. Not too close so was comfortable. This area though near the beach has very little wind. We left our awning out the whole time with no tiedowns! The morning we were leaving the sewer would not drain and was reported. This is our favorite state park of all the states we've visited. There is so much to do that we can't get it all in during a short visit of a few days. There are paved walking/jogging/ bike paths that wind thru the back country or connect you to Orange Beach or Gulf Shores if you choose. There is a great huge beautiful beach on the Gulf with a fishing pier, a smaller swimming beach on Shelby Lake near a zipline, golf course, tennis courts, volley ball, dog park, swimming pool, nature center, etc. A great place for families. Sites are spacious but open so you can see what all the neighbors are up to. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

We love Gulf State Park! We come once a year for a week with family. The park is clean and very big. There's a lot to do within the park. We love the bike trails and on ground swimming pool. Beaches are a bike ride away and you get a pass to go on the long pier when you camp here. Reservationists are very helpful and friendly. We look forward to coming every year and I think we'll continue this for a lifetime! We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is HUGE but awesome. There is so much to do here and the beach is so close. The campground cost is a bit high for a state park but it does include a 11% lodging fee and at 15% resort fee. The pool, trails, and beach are great. Park reservations get you free access to the fishing pier and parking at the pavilion. The staff is nice and the front office is manned 24/7. Trail system is great and has a mixture of paved and unpaved trails. Love the boardwalks that go over the lakes, canals, and marshes, which are great for watching wildlife. Got to see a bobcat crossing the road and a baby cottonmouth, which was promptly relocated by park staff, but no alligators. Give yourself a bit more time to get there. You will have to go through Gulf Shores or Orange Beach traffic to get to the park. If you go through Orange Beach you will have to pay a toll to cross a bridge. However it is nice having these vacation destinations nearby to get good food and other entertainment for the kids. Camp store rents bicycles so if you forget it or don't have room you will still be able to ride around. We had site 48 which was on a quiet little cul-de-sac. It made the park seem small and didn't even notice that there were 400+ other campers. I would avoid site 49 as there is a little trail right next to it that runs to and from the pool/camp store/nature center area. Bath house and restrooms are a hair dated but are very clean. Cell coverage (AT&T) was good but data lagged significantly. OTA was great with Mobile and Pensacola nearby. We would camp here again. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:
If you get a spot on the main road, Raccoon Road, you will have LOTS of traffic all day and night long. Recommend that you get a spot on an outer ring road on the pull-thrus at the very end of Raccoon Road, sites 447-468. The vegetation at the sites along the Boat Canal and Middle Lake a fairly thick and there are signs warning you about alligators, although we did not see any, and this cuts down on your outdoor space a bit.

This is one of our favorite State Parks! The park is HUGE! It is over 6100 acres with 496 campsites. There is a lot to do - kayaking, camping, boating, canoeing, hiking, biking, swimming (the beach and the pool are both wonderful), nature watching, lounging, eating at the area restaurants, visiting local bars, etc. There is so much to do, it is almost impossible to do it all in a week's stay. The staff is very nice and responsive. The sites are mostly large. There are some older smaller sites but, for the most part, they have plenty of room for two vehicles plus your RV. Most sites are Full-Hook-Ups. When making the reservations, they let you know which aren't. Water pressure is ok, when the park is full. Ours hovered around 30psi. Not great, but not terrible, either. The power seemed to be very stable, even with 496 sites running their AC in 91 degree temps. The only downside is VERY little shade. We always have a great time, when we visit. When coming south, do not take AL 135 (AL Coastal Connection). Your GPS will try to take you that way. Resist the urge to follow it as the traffic is terrible and the road very narrow. Go all the way on AL 59 (Gulf Shores Pkwy) to AL 182 (Beach Blvd). Take that east and enter the campground area at the traffic light to State Park Rd 2. We camped at Gulf State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Stayed a couple nights mid week, prior to Memorial Day. We stayed in space 265. A FHU site that backed up to the lake. There was nice spacing between the sites and we were able to get Satellite working with no problem. Cell coverage was fine. Great bike riding campground. Make sure you bring a bike or rent one and ride all the trails...plenty of places to eat or buy your own seafood or catch it and cook your own meal.....

When you get sick of the beach, go to OWA which is a brand new amusement park.

Be sure to bring your bicycles! Wolf Bay Lodge for a great grilled fresh fish dinner. Go see the Blue Angels practice at the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, FL. Eddie Childers mobile RV service was excellent.

The nearby towns of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores have a lot to offer, including souvenir shops, a water park, go-cart tracks, etc. The town of Foley has an outlet mall and a restaurant named Lambert's, which is a must.

Seafood- Gulf Shores Steamer in Orange Beach is excellent! Avoid "The Steamer" in Gulf Shores, our food was cold and tasteless. The Gulf restaurant and bar (Orange Beach) built from shipping containers is a unique and really fun venue. Don't miss it!

Lots of really good seafood restaurants, Civil War Fort Morgan nearby and Bellingrath Gardens a ferry boat ride away. Beautiful white sand beaches ! State Park has its own beach

Lots of trails to bike ride or walk. The main highways through Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have marked bike lanes that connect to the State Park trails for easy access to lots of local seafood restaurants and attractions. Great uncrowded beach on the Gulf. We cycled to Orange Beach to visit a bike shop and tour an interesting local history museum.

Check out the 1500 foot long pier where fishermen are hauling in interesting good sized fish. A pass to the pier is included in your camping stay.

Visit Fort Morgan. Ate at Lamberts, it was just okay. But if you go, take cash, they do not accept cards.

Try the Segway tour- amazingly easy to learn the Segways and beautiful view. Great way to learn about the park. Try geocaching if you've never given it a try- tons of greats sites at this park. Lots of restaurants nearby as well as big box stores.

For a local joint Doc's in Orange Beach is the place. For a larger restaurant we enjoyed Acme Oyster House in Gulf Shores and don't forget Lambert's (home of the throwed roll) in Foley.

Pretty much anything we needed was within a short drive. A place called Fora-Bama had a Christmas Potluck (free - bring a dish). We went and it was very good. Apparently the place (which is quite a complex) has a number of such activities on a routine basis. Also tried the Shrimp Shack as recommended by another reviewer (went there twice).

Bring your bikes - great variety of paved trails in the park. Dog beach/park is a bit away, so you may prefer driving rather than walking to it, but it is a nice open area to allow your dogs to burn off extra energy.
Flapper • September 2015 -
Lots of good seafood around here. The Shrimp Basket is my favorite for reasonably priced seafood.

As always, staying in Gulf Shores allows for plenty of extracurricular activities!

This state park is within a short drive to about anything one could want; shop, dine, beach, recreation. We enjoyed a day trip via ferry from Ft. Morgan to Dauphin Island. Ferry ride was a bit pricey, and the last return ferry is around 5pm. We packed a picnic lunch and ate it in the city park adjacent to the ferry boarding site. Next time, we would buy a one-way ferry ride onto the Island, then drive around Mobile Bay, adding some site-seeing adventure to the day.

Beach was about 1/2 mile from site! Bikes are good. Lambert's is close by (home of the throwing rolls). Also Pensacola is close so we saw the Blue Angels and toured Fort Pike where Geronimo was prisoner.
