I want to share that recently we got really bad service from the Decatur/Wheeler Lake KOA near Decatur, Alabama. First, we arrived early - about an hour before scheduled arrival. We were coming from another time zone. They charged us an early check-in fee. Second, we planned to stay 2 nights. During the day in between we had no water to the campground. They knew at check-in that there was a problem. Did they warn us at check-in so that we could fill our freshwater tank? Nope. All day I was told that the water would be on in an hour. Still no water when I went to bed that night. They could have told us that it was going to be out all day and we would have moved to another campground. I've sent a number of emails to the camp with no response. I'm not asking for a full refund; just one day's worth. I am not complaining about KOA in general. We use them a lot. I just won't use that one again. We camped at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

For a KOA this campground has a lot of work to do. Although most of the sites have a view of Wheeler lake the full sites with electric/water/sewer do not. Our site was right on the lake which was beautiful. P21. The electric/water sites have views or are right on the lake. Perfect for kayakers, canoes etc. although the shoreline is a little rough. The sites are gravel and narrow and full of weeds. The sites also hadn't been picked up or mowed when we were there. You are also out in middle of nowhere so bring all the food and items with you, it at least 20 to 30 minutes to a town with all the amenities you want. There is no pool but they do have a beach with sand on the other side of the campground. They also have some sites that could manage 2 campers at a time. We camped here in the middle of April and the place was empty. Nice but could be really improved on especially since this is a KOA campground. Not your typical KOA. Bring everything with you as Decatur is 20-30 minutes away. We camped at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA in a Motorhome.

The good thing about this park is that it's in a beautiful locale on Mallard Creek. If you're a boater or a fisherman it's great. Also they have spaces together for groups of three units to camp together. It is about 10 miles from any shopping. Unfortunately not all the "amenities" they list are actually operational. They only have 5 full-hookup spaces and they are not near the lake. There is no WiFi except in the office. Our space had trash and many cigarette butts from previous campers. The bathrooms have no electrical plugs and are not cleaned on a regular basis. The women's shower had cigarette butts in the shower as well as dirty washcloths....two days in a row. Another shower was full of ants. They encourage you to pay another $10 for a gate key or you have to wait at the gate to be let in. As other campers have mentioned the roads are narrow and the gates narrower still. The morning we were leaving the tornado warning siren went off....we tried to call the office (after 9 a.m.) and only got a recording. When it stopped as we were gathering our pets to find shelter we realized it was a test. It would have been considerate to inform campers when they check in that they have the test every Monday! We would not stay here again. We camped at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Check in was easy and staff was friendly. Sites were well marked and clean. Nice picnic table and fire pit at sites. Site backed up right to Wheeler Lake, great view and sunrise. Great campground, will definitely go back. We camped at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Roads are very narrow. Gate entering the campground area itself is very narrow. (A lot of paint scrapings on the gate posts). First site we were in was very unlevel (site P49). Also, we couldn't open our bedroom slide due to the power meter being so high. There was a dog chained up outside all day and night that barked all the time. Roads and sites are not big rig friendly. There was an additional $5.00 per night fee for "park amenities", which I assume was for the boat ramp, which we didn't use. Didn't see any other "park amenities", that aren't in other campgrounds. We camped at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA in a Truck Camper.

Staff were very friendly and it seems to be a very neat and quiet KOA right on the water. It's off the beaten path, so no traffic noises at night like most KOA's. Seems to be only 4 sites with full hookups and at least one was a permanent resident, so make reservations ahead of time. Wished we had more time to explore the amenities of this site, but were just passing through. We camped at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This campground is a little more expensive than most in the area but it is the perfect example of what camping is all about. Almost all of the sites are on the lake or within a few steps of the lake. It is clean, quiet and, best of all, the sites are very large and shady. Our site was a back-in with a multi-level patio that stepped right down to the water. It was a great spot for fishing right from the patio. The campground only has a few sites with sewer hookups because of TVA environmental restrictions by the lake. They do have an easy to access dump station. The restrooms were clean and easy to use. The boat ramp was large enough for most small craft fishing boats. There is no pool but the beach was clean and a good place to swim. The park is well laid out with many large shade trees. There is no cable or Wi-Fi at each site. With the beautiful lake, the fishing, and the abundant wildlife that rambles through the park we didn't miss the TV or Wi-Fi at all. If you're looking to spend a few days at a clean quiet campsite on a lake I highly recommend this KOA. We camped at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Huntsville Space and Rocket Center is a great place to visit and learn about the evolution and historic achievements of the USA's space programs. The exhibits of the space shuttle, the Saturn V rocket, the Space Station and many more displays are incredible. A fun and amazing place for all ages.
