Nice clean family campground. Sites are spaced for privacy. Would return if we return to the area. Follow the route suggested by the website. There are some FHU sites available. The site we had was not. There are 2 dump stations on the way out. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Up on the mountain in Monte Sano Park it's 10 degrees cooler than in Huntsville which is nice in May. Sites are wooded and large. Decent showers. Pavilion good for get togethers or Rallies. Planetarium is a short walk away. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Great State Park - exceeded expectations. Our site was large, level and private. Easy to back in. Lots of shade, lots of nice hiking trails on the grounds, lots to do and see without leaving the park, and lots to do in Huntsville as well. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Nice park about 1000 feet above Huntsville. Make sure you come into the park via Governor's drive as the north route is too narrow and has tight turns. When it rains the park can be muddy and the pads tend to spray your rig during the rain. We also found that the voltage would drop below 105 volts when the park was crowded and people using heaters. Park person acknowledged that wiring was old and 4 sites share a wire. Roads are decent, but trees may not have been trimmed in areas. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Very nice state park up on a mountain and very woodsy. The staff was very professional and accommodating. This was an unexpected stop due to rain storms. We were pleased with the sites being well drained. In between the rainfall we were able to explore the park and find beautiful view over Huntsville. We camped in a 33' motorhome. Campground in State Park located in the hills above Huntsville, AL. We stayed in space 75 - FHU and Level!! Cell service and OTA was OK, No dish due to trees. There was a washer and dryer in the restrooms that worked great. In the park there is a Japanese Tea Garden to walk through, as well as a nice North Plateau Trail that was a nice mix of forest and scenic vistas. Plenty of stores down the hill in Huntsville to restock at. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

We booked our reservation online... when we arrived our assigned site had no sewer even though we had booked a full hook up site. The staff was very accommodating and moved us to another site which did have sewer. We have Verizon service and our phones TV and hotspot had zero connection. We then thought we would go to the Overlook to see the view at night, as we were told it was an amazing sight unfortunately at 7 p.m. the gates were locked and there was no way to get to the Overlook. All of the trails also close 30 minutes before dark. Since we could not do anything after dark we decided to try to watch some TV using local channels, they were completely pixelated and unwatchable. We were scheduled to stay 4 days we are staying one night and leaving. I am not coming back to this park. Unless you want to hike during the day and sit in your campsite at night BTW the site seem short the only area there is to do anything is a small square gravel area, where the picnic table is otherwise it is full of leaves sticks underbrush and many areas of drop-off. Make sure to read comment about driving here..come in Governor Rd still a climb but not to bad. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed one week in a 40 foot 5th wheel, spot #60 (Oct. 2018). This is a beautiful park with a friendly staff, well known for the abundance of wildlife- especially deer and birds. Please read our tip about GPS routing to the park.

The park has numerous hiking and biking trails- trail running is also popular in the park. The trails are in several sections, some of them are within the campground proper, the main trailheads are located a short distance from the camping are and a few of the connector trails can be accessed directly from the camping area. Another extensive set of trails are located on a land trust at the edge of the park. There is an old paved road that is now closed to traffic that allows easy access to the land trust without having to drive to them via Bankhead Dr.

The dump station is easy to access and well maintained. There is a lovely Japanese Tea Garden in the Park. One trail leads to an old fire tower that is fenced off, it was one used as a NASA observation station.

The park can get crowded on weekends, reservations for the best sites would probably need to be made well in advance. Most sites are 30 amp without sewer. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We used Waze GPS. We input Monte Sano State Park as our destination. The routing tried to take us to Bankhead Dr., which goes through a neighborhood (low tree branch’s) and up a length restricted road. This no longer the entrance to the park and has not been the correct route for many years! Luckily we saw the sign.

The correct route is Governor’s Blvd. which is a direct exit off the Expressway. From Governor’s you turn onto Nolen. Which is a straight shot into the park.

Overall Rating:

Older State Park, but very well maintained and clean. There is a pretty good climb to the park (approx. 1.5 miles at 3-4%), but the top of the mountain is level and therefore bicycle friendly. The sites are generally level and spaced well. Site construction is gravel with a timber border. It rained during our stay, and our site (#69) briefly held water, but not a major problem. There are a few 50 amp sites with sewer, but most are 30 amp/water - check their online map. Lots of great trails for hiking and biking, and the BEST free trail maps I've ever seen at a park. Glossy, water resistant, large and clear. Trails are extremely well marked. There is an observatory and planetarium adjacent to the facility with Saturday night shows most of the year. The sites 44-57 back up to an overlook which is particularly impressive at night overlooking the lights of Huntsville. Be aware, sites 49, 51, 53, and 57 are double sites. The doubles sites are formed in a "V", and are tight for two campers, plenty big for one. The park is secure, with an automated access gate - code required. We saw many park maintenance vehicles, and security vehicles, circling the campground. There is an overlook adjacent to the campground area, but the view from the playground/picnic/amphitheater area is actually better. Camp store has ice, firewood is at the host's campsites (for sale). The main playground is not close to the campground - maybe 1/2 mile away, although there are several small playgrounds within the camping loops. Satellite reception is difficult in many sites because of the heavy tree canopy, but plenty of OTA TV channels. Interior roads are in good shape. There are no lights in the campground at night except at the bath houses. Most campsites are long enough for big rigs. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This was a great park. Staff was very friendly and made check in easy. This was my Grandparents favorite campground when i was a little kid, and now I know why. It was clean, quite, and the sites were level and had plenty of room. We had deer walking in our campsite and down the road. Definitely worth the stay if you are in the Huntsville area. Our first stay at Monte Santo in a 30ft Class A. The staff was friendly and accommodating. When a change of plans allowed for an extra night, they carefully explained we would have to move across the street as the space was rented for the last night. No problem. They were fascinated that I wasn't upset. They took care of all the paperwork for both sites in advance! The facilities were much better than other State Parks we have stayed in. Plenty of hot water and pressure. Always clean. The park also features a scenic overlook, guided hikes, plenty of hiking trails, the North Alabama Japanese Garden, a huge playground near the lodge as well as smaller ones in the campground. This campground featured "Y" side-by-side campsites which would put you very close to someone you didn't know or would be great for a two-family outing. Just be aware. We experienced a tire issue while sitting still in the campground. The repair service arrived on time and got down to one last detail, but lacked a 9/16 socket. Yep, the camp host had one and gladly loaned it! We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

This is our go to local park. It is always significantly cooler than the surrounding area due to being on mountain and very shaded. There are a few full hook-up sites. Unfortunately, the secret of this jewel has gotten out so you need to book a couple of weeks ahead. Book your reservation well in advance. Even though your site may have a 50 amp plug-in, there are no 50 amp sites in the park. Also, the WiFi and cellular capabilities are almost nonexistent. We’ve found that sites numbered in the low 60s seem to have better cell signal than the others We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Roads outside the park are a bit of a challenge with hills, narrow lanes, low hanging utility lines and tree limbs....and this is on the "easy" way in! But once you get there, the park is great. Interior roads are easy to navigate, and sites are angled for easy access. Utilities worked but our 30 amp connection had a loose ground wire and had to be repaired. Also, had to remove my Progressive EMS because of a grounding issue. Sites are good sized and placed so that you have some privacy. We was able to get satellite TV with our Traveller but the trees were just putting out their leaves. I doubt satellite would be possible in the summer, however, you can get some stations over the air out of Huntsville. Verizon service was spotty but we managed with our booster. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

This park has full hook ups all the way down to primitive. Somewhere there is a site to fit your needs. Several loops that you can walk but this park has many hiking trails of varies skill levels. There is also an observatory in the park. Check the schedule for activities. Beautiful night lights of Huntsville as you walk the farthest loop. The roads up to the park are a little scary. Quite the climb on the road we brought our coach up on. There is also another road in coming from Huntsville that a big rig would be very challenged to make. There are warnings but what do you do if your GPS send you that way and you don't know. Thankfully, we did not have that issue. Just be warned. The park itself is very nice and we would definitely return. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Used this campground as a base of operations while visiting my daughter and granddaughter for two weeks. We ate a lot of hot dogs and schmors. Site 30 was a nice pull through FHU site. Site was level and right on the corner, so it was fun watching the world go by. Verizon work fine, both data and voice. ATT data okay, but phone required you to be outside the trailer for long conversations. The office staff could not have been nicer and more accommodating. Tips for other Campers:

If you are more than 40 foot combined length, DO NOT USE the Bankhead Parkway access. Bankhead Parkway has two mean switch backs that will be a challenge for a long vehicle combo. Use Governor's Drive to Monte Sano Blvd to access the campground. If you need supplies, the Star Market at the foot of Bankhead Parkway is a really nice place to go.
