Great place with very friendly people!! Highly recommend and will definitely be back. Nice sized pull throughs, nice trails, and little camping area with each site. We were traveling with our 42 ft. 5th wheel. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice clean family campground. Sites are spaced for privacy. Would return if we return to the area. Follow the route suggested by the website. There are some FHU sites available. The site we had was not. There are 2 dump stations on the way out. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We stayed one week in a 40 foot 5th wheel, spot #60 (Oct. 2018). This is a beautiful park with a friendly staff, well known for the abundance of wildlife- especially deer and birds. Please read our tip about GPS routing to the park.

The park has numerous hiking and biking trails- trail running is also popular in the park. The trails are in several sections, some of them are within the campground proper, the main trailheads are located a short distance from the camping are and a few of the connector trails can be accessed directly from the camping area. Another extensive set of trails are located on a land trust at the edge of the park. There is an old paved road that is now closed to traffic that allows easy access to the land trust without having to drive to them via Bankhead Dr.

The dump station is easy to access and well maintained. There is a lovely Japanese Tea Garden in the Park. One trail leads to an old fire tower that is fenced off, it was one used as a NASA observation station.

The park can get crowded on weekends, reservations for the best sites would probably need to be made well in advance. Most sites are 30 amp without sewer. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

We used Waze GPS. We input Monte Sano State Park as our destination. The routing tried to take us to Bankhead Dr., which goes through a neighborhood (low tree branch’s) and up a length restricted road. This no longer the entrance to the park and has not been the correct route for many years! Luckily we saw the sign.

The correct route is Governor’s Blvd. which is a direct exit off the Expressway. From Governor’s you turn onto Nolen. Which is a straight shot into the park.

Overall Rating:

Older State Park, but very well maintained and clean. There is a pretty good climb to the park (approx. 1.5 miles at 3-4%), but the top of the mountain is level and therefore bicycle friendly. The sites are generally level and spaced well. Site construction is gravel with a timber border. It rained during our stay, and our site (#69) briefly held water, but not a major problem. There are a few 50 amp sites with sewer, but most are 30 amp/water - check their online map. Lots of great trails for hiking and biking, and the BEST free trail maps I've ever seen at a park. Glossy, water resistant, large and clear. Trails are extremely well marked. There is an observatory and planetarium adjacent to the facility with Saturday night shows most of the year. The sites 44-57 back up to an overlook which is particularly impressive at night overlooking the lights of Huntsville. Be aware, sites 49, 51, 53, and 57 are double sites. The doubles sites are formed in a "V", and are tight for two campers, plenty big for one. The park is secure, with an automated access gate - code required. We saw many park maintenance vehicles, and security vehicles, circling the campground. There is an overlook adjacent to the campground area, but the view from the playground/picnic/amphitheater area is actually better. Camp store has ice, firewood is at the host's campsites (for sale). The main playground is not close to the campground - maybe 1/2 mile away, although there are several small playgrounds within the camping loops. Satellite reception is difficult in many sites because of the heavy tree canopy, but plenty of OTA TV channels. Interior roads are in good shape. There are no lights in the campground at night except at the bath houses. Most campsites are long enough for big rigs. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is our go to local park. It is always significantly cooler than the surrounding area due to being on mountain and very shaded. There are a few full hook-up sites. Unfortunately, the secret of this jewel has gotten out so you need to book a couple of weeks ahead. Book your reservation well in advance. Even though your site may have a 50 amp plug-in, there are no 50 amp sites in the park. Also, the WiFi and cellular capabilities are almost nonexistent. We’ve found that sites numbered in the low 60s seem to have better cell signal than the others We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

One of the most beautiful sites we have camped in. We were there in mid-October for peak leaf change. We had deer wandering around after dusk. Easy check in, easy back in site. I would like to see better signage as you approach the campground. I was totally dependent on my GPS until just a mile or two from the state park and my GPS has been known to be wrong. We will be back! We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We enjoyed our stay. This is kind of a local park for us but its was good for a quiet getaway, and we went to work from the campground. As mentioned, it is a quiet park and the scenery over Huntsville is something to see. Park is close to Huntsville so there are plenty of places to eat. Staff was friendly. I would have given it a 9 or 10 but the roads once you turn off of Governors drive are kind of narrow and go through some neighborhoods along the way. Also they need a better entrance sign. It is kind of hidden and to close to actual turn off spot so you can run by it before you know it (like I did). Luckily there was some more roads that led back to it without much trouble. All in all we had a good stay and we would stay here again for a short trip. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

On this trip, all of our check-ins seemed to be after the office closed, and this was no exception. The camp host came out to us to let us in, because we sat in the parking lot making a quick bathroom stop before figuring out how to check-in after hours. He was a quiet guy, not welcoming, but not unfriendly. He and his wife helped me pick a site that would be good for our size and he even took me for a ride through the campground on his golf cart to preview the sites. The park itself is stunning. Paved roads through-out and nicely sized sites. We didn't use them, but they even had some "A & B" sites where 2 campers could be parked together. The sewer sites were limited and unavailable by the time we checked-in on a Friday. I didn't have any problems with the 30amp electricity, but we were at family events each day and didn't spend much time at the camper at all. I'd gladly stay here again. A quick comment about the roads leading to it. For big rigs, avoid Bankhead Parkway and Fearn St. instead opting for Monte Sano Blvd. There is a 10mph switchback/hairpin curve to contend with. I made it with my 42' FW and 22' dually/crew cab truck, but made the choice to go down the mountain differently. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice state park. We live nearby and I work in Huntsville so we decided to just camp for a few days while I worked. The sites are large and in a wooded setting. They have taken steps to keep it natural and still provide some conveniences. Nice staff and clean restrooms. Great views just a few steps away. I would recommend to anyone looking for a state park type setting. If you need a pool, clubhouse, internet, etc. this is not for you. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Monte Sano was a beautiful park. Sites were spacious, nice picnic table, fire ring, generally level. Bathrooms were quite nice for a state park. I am however, hooked on my technology and cell service was sporadic and had many dropped calls. Verizon air card in computer rarely got above one bar. If you are a hiker or love bicycling, this is a good place for you. Convenient to Huntsville. Tree cover is dense so no satellite TV either. Very quiet during the week, but on Friday the place filled up and got very busy. We stayed in a water/electric site only. There are only about 10 or 12 sewer sites on each of two loops. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a beautiful campground that has the best of both worlds! You can stay in the park the whole time and enjoy wonderful hiking, great family bike trails (or harder if you prefer), and an awesome playground. Or: you can stay here and be minutes away from all there is to see and do in the Huntsville area. The sites themselves are very roomy and separated nicely from each other. The campground has lots of trees and is fairly level, no matter what site you are in. Unlike many other state parks, the sites are large and can accommodate bigger RVs. One word of caution. Many GPS units have you enter the park from a direction that takes you up a long and steep mountain. You should enter the park via US 431. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

There is plenty room between sites. The site was level and well maintained. The park was very quiet and almost empty due to the time of year. I could not get a satellite signal due to the amount of trees covering over our site. We will return and stay again. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a very nice/rustic campground on top of Monte Sano mountain in Huntsville, Alabama. The sites are varied from small to quite spacious. There is a limited number of full-hookup sites available, so you need to get there early to snag one of those sites. There seems to be a movement to update the campground if the state will release some money and if that happens, we were told that all sites would be full hookup and many improvements would be made. This is a nice campground for a quiet weekend. Huntsville is minutes away, and there is plenty to do up at the state park. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
