Up on the mountain in Monte Sano Park it's 10 degrees cooler than in Huntsville which is nice in May. Sites are wooded and large. Decent showers. Pavilion good for get togethers or Rallies. Planetarium is a short walk away. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice park about 1000 feet above Huntsville. Make sure you come into the park via Governor's drive as the north route is too narrow and has tight turns. When it rains the park can be muddy and the pads tend to spray your rig during the rain. We also found that the voltage would drop below 105 volts when the park was crowded and people using heaters. Park person acknowledged that wiring was old and 4 sites share a wire. Roads are decent, but trees may not have been trimmed in areas. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $36.00
Overall Rating:

Older State Park, but very well maintained and clean. There is a pretty good climb to the park (approx. 1.5 miles at 3-4%), but the top of the mountain is level and therefore bicycle friendly. The sites are generally level and spaced well. Site construction is gravel with a timber border. It rained during our stay, and our site (#69) briefly held water, but not a major problem. There are a few 50 amp sites with sewer, but most are 30 amp/water - check their online map. Lots of great trails for hiking and biking, and the BEST free trail maps I've ever seen at a park. Glossy, water resistant, large and clear. Trails are extremely well marked. There is an observatory and planetarium adjacent to the facility with Saturday night shows most of the year. The sites 44-57 back up to an overlook which is particularly impressive at night overlooking the lights of Huntsville. Be aware, sites 49, 51, 53, and 57 are double sites. The doubles sites are formed in a "V", and are tight for two campers, plenty big for one. The park is secure, with an automated access gate - code required. We saw many park maintenance vehicles, and security vehicles, circling the campground. There is an overlook adjacent to the campground area, but the view from the playground/picnic/amphitheater area is actually better. Camp store has ice, firewood is at the host's campsites (for sale). The main playground is not close to the campground - maybe 1/2 mile away, although there are several small playgrounds within the camping loops. Satellite reception is difficult in many sites because of the heavy tree canopy, but plenty of OTA TV channels. Interior roads are in good shape. There are no lights in the campground at night except at the bath houses. Most campsites are long enough for big rigs. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Roads outside the park are a bit of a challenge with hills, narrow lanes, low hanging utility lines and tree limbs....and this is on the "easy" way in! But once you get there, the park is great. Interior roads are easy to navigate, and sites are angled for easy access. Utilities worked but our 30 amp connection had a loose ground wire and had to be repaired. Also, had to remove my Progressive EMS because of a grounding issue. Sites are good sized and placed so that you have some privacy. We was able to get satellite TV with our Traveller but the trees were just putting out their leaves. I doubt satellite would be possible in the summer, however, you can get some stations over the air out of Huntsville. Verizon service was spotty but we managed with our booster. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This park has full hook ups all the way down to primitive. Somewhere there is a site to fit your needs. Several loops that you can walk but this park has many hiking trails of varies skill levels. There is also an observatory in the park. Check the schedule for activities. Beautiful night lights of Huntsville as you walk the farthest loop. The roads up to the park are a little scary. Quite the climb on the road we brought our coach up on. There is also another road in coming from Huntsville that a big rig would be very challenged to make. There are warnings but what do you do if your GPS send you that way and you don't know. Thankfully, we did not have that issue. Just be warned. The park itself is very nice and we would definitely return. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Used this campground as a base of operations while visiting my daughter and granddaughter for two weeks. We ate a lot of hot dogs and schmors. Site 30 was a nice pull through FHU site. Site was level and right on the corner, so it was fun watching the world go by. Verizon work fine, both data and voice. ATT data okay, but phone required you to be outside the trailer for long conversations. The office staff could not have been nicer and more accommodating. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If you are more than 40 foot combined length, DO NOT USE the Bankhead Parkway access. Bankhead Parkway has two mean switch backs that will be a challenge for a long vehicle combo. Use Governor's Drive to Monte Sano Blvd to access the campground. If you need supplies, the Star Market at the foot of Bankhead Parkway is a really nice place to go.

The roads are asphalt and the sites are crushed stone. Full hook up is fine; water, sewer, and electric work fine. There is no cable and no wifi. You can pick up 4 or 5 tv stations with antenna. The sites are not close, plenty of room. The sites are fairly level and require only a little effort to level the unit. We stayed in site 30, a pull thru. The park is about 1600 feet above the city and it makes a great view of Huntsville at night. There is a planetarium adjacent to the park that is open on Saturday nights. On clear nights they allow visitors to look through the telescope. On the back side of the park there is a beautiful overlook of the mountains. There are plenty of hiking trails. It easy to get to the Marshall Space Flight Center from the park and 14 miles away is a beautiful nature center called Hays Nature Center. We would be happy to stay here again. Many people have rated this park and 8, but I list as a 7 since no concrete pads, no cable, no TV, no patio, and it is an older park, but clean. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Travel Trailer.

My wife and I came down Thanksgiving evening for a couple of nights to celebrate her 40th birthday. We had been to this park before to simply picnic and look around. This was our first time to camp. The campground is very nice and was all we hoped it would be. Nice, level site with full hookup (#74). We had a back-in and the camp host rode down with his golf cart and flash light and was very nice to help us back in. We took a couple of walks around the campground and noticed you can see the lights of Huntsville below from the edge of the campground. We didn't need to use the bathhouses, but went into them to take a look and they are very clean and well built. Both have a single coin-operated washer and dryer in the central entrance between the men's and women's sides. The camp store seemed to have basic necessity items. NOTE: We highly recommend driving up from Huntsville on highway 431 (Governor's Drive). The other route up (Bankhead Parkway) would be very sketchy for a travel trailer or large fifth wheel/motor home due to the hairpin turns and narrow residential roads leading to it. We definitely plan to camp again. We really enjoyed our stay! We may try a buddy site next time. We have some close friends who camp also. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Park is in good condition. Roads are paved but the sites are crushed gravel. Rained two of the three days and we noticed water running through our site not around it. The park is close to Huntsville but do not expect cell service; it is not available. We would camp here again. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We enjoyed our stay. This is kind of a local park for us but its was good for a quiet getaway, and we went to work from the campground. As mentioned, it is a quiet park and the scenery over Huntsville is something to see. Park is close to Huntsville so there are plenty of places to eat. Staff was friendly. I would have given it a 9 or 10 but the roads once you turn off of Governors drive are kind of narrow and go through some neighborhoods along the way. Also they need a better entrance sign. It is kind of hidden and to close to actual turn off spot so you can run by it before you know it (like I did). Luckily there was some more roads that led back to it without much trouble. All in all we had a good stay and we would stay here again for a short trip. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a great RV Park! Large sites with a lot of mature trees. The sites are farther apart and separated by trees so you have more privacy than you normally get. It was nice and quiet. We stayed in a nice pull thru with full hook-ups and fire pit. Bathrooms/showers kept clean despite quite a bit of traffic. The pads are crushed gravel, but ours was fairly level. Great playground and lots of hiking trails. We also visited the Huntsville Space & Science Center, which is a 15-20 minute drive away. We would visit again! We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice level gravel sites within shady forest setting. Okay rest rooms but were in a need of a cleaning. Maybe things were out of sorts because a terrible thunderstorm just passed through the area with lightening hitting trees, knocking out electrical, cable and Wi-Fi and they were trying to get things going again. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Motorhome.

Rate reflects average of four night of camping. Two nights at discounted rate ($19), and two (Friday & Saturday) at full rate of $22). Plus 11% tax. Previous reviews are pretty much right on. Our site (#13) was a bit uneven for our 28 foot rig, but we made it work. No cellular service (Verizon) but plenty of local over the air TV. Very clean restrooms. Got a bit busy on the weekend, but there were plenty of empty sites, too. We would stay here again. We camped at Monte Sano State Park in a Travel Trailer.
