1. If you have AT&T you will not have phone service or internet access. 2. Very remote area, nothing close except Dollar General and it was not stocked or staffed well . Waited in line 10 people deep 3. The campground is very pretty and scenic. 4. Bring ant spray and spray your jacks and under housing. We stayed less than 24 hours and we had ants Climbing our leveling Jacks. Our camper was over run by tiny blacks ants inside and out. Took us six hours of cleaning and fumigating at our next stop. I realize you could get ants anywhere. Our site was not paved so maybe that would make a difference. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We have camped here frequently over the years visiting friends and relatives. I've reviewed this park several times and the rating has always been an 8 or 9. This time, however, I'm dropping my rating to a 7 for one reason - the smell of a sewer plant in close proximity to the CG seems to be worse, and more frequent. It ashamed because this is an excellent CG. The sites are very spacious, well maintained, the utilities have always been excellent, the roads are great, and the campground gatekeepers and hosts have always been excellent. This is one of the few FHU COE parks. The bathrooms are generally clean and air conditioned in the summer. But, it's difficult to enjoy a cookout with the obnoxious odor of a sewer plant warfting by. It's worse now than in past years. Maybe the sewer plant has expanded? It doesn't seem to be related to wind direction as much and the odor is stronger now than in past years. Hopefully this is just a temporary condition in the hot part of the year. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

To be fair, we only used this Campground for an overnight stop to break up our drive. The "Catoma" side is AWESOME! Shady big lots with very level concrete pads. Full hookups! The other side is a bit more rustic. Catoma had one bath house with separate bathrooms and showers. Could use a serious scrubbing. Old and it shows. There is a fabulous playground area with lots of options for the kids. We stayed in sites 38 & 39 and did not have a view but a very very long pull thru. We were close to a short level trail to the observation deck over the lake. Most sites in Catoma backed up to the lake. This place will always be just a stop over for us. It's a boater's heaven but we don't own a boat. You need to bring your own fun to this park. There is a Dollar General and a Race Track just outside the Entrance. We were allowed early admittance since our sites were available. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

AVOID at ALL costs, the "Butcher" store/convenience store on the road before the Campground. ALL of us were sick that night from their version of "BBQ" (and refills were .70 for small drinks).

There are two separate campgounds here. Antioch is the older campground with smaller gravel sites, closer together. Lots of trees and very shady. The trees offer some privacy between sites. The Catoma loop has much larger sites and concrete camping pads and driveways. There are 13 pull throughs. Some sites are full hookups. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

Our site was HUGE! And we were not surrounded by anybody! Tall pines and shade and a very quiet park. The laundry was only $1 for a wash and $1 for a dry and the laundry room was clean. This is a government facility so there was just a check in gate. No amenities like a little shop for supplies or a store. We had a full hook-up, unusual for a State Park. Really a nice stay. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

Our favorite Corps of Engineers Campground! Perfectly level concrete sites with FHU’s, our only complaint is the lack of cell service — but in a beautiful place like this, 2 bars is just enough! We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

Super nice COE park. Catoma loop has full hookup sites with 50 amp. Sites are level and shady. Satellite service available at some sites. River access from the Antioch loop, which is older and less level. There are 5 showers and toilets per gender in the showerhouse closest to the group shelter. Two very clean washing machines and dryers are also available. The only negative, the cold shower knob spins easily which makes it difficult to stop it at a comfortable temp. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

This is probably the nicest campground we have stayed in. All concrete pads and mostly level. Gravel area with picnic table and lantern stand adjacent to pad. Very wooded and A LOT of space between sites. Very quiet and the site we had backed up to the river. Nice area for walking. I'm guessing the pad was about 70' long so there was more than ample space for our 37' motorhome and toad. Although we didn't use the restrooms or showers I did look at them and while they were adequate, I was surprised at how old and somewhat dirty they were. If they did some updating and cleaned them it would be top notch. I guess I was just surprised the bathrooms didn't meet the same quality as the rest of the campground. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

Stayed one night on our way south. Check in quick and easy, staff friendly and helpful. Park is clean, interior roads paved and easy to navigate. Our site in the Catoma Loop was a large and deep with plenty of space between us and our neighbors. The site had a level concrete pad and a large area for the picnic table. Utilities well placed and worked fine. There were plenty of trees for shade and plants and underbrush between sites. Restroom near our site was older and could use an update but was clean. Showers were separate rooms and you have to push a button to keep getting water. Overall this is a very nice COE campground. We would camp here again if in the area. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

Great trip from the get go. Check in was a breeze, the couple was very nice and fast. Took 5 min to check in. Plenty of room to drive to sites. Site pads are very level and easy user sites I’ve seen to back into. Bathrooms are not super clean but what I would expect. Large bathroom/shower is better than smaller building. Had to keep pushing the button to keep water flowing during shower. Not complaining though. Didn’t have to bring a roll of quarters. Outstanding location in my new experience as a camper with my family. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

This was an overnight stay as we were traveling through on I-65. Good roads from the interstate about 10 miles through the country side. Good way to see the roads less traveled. The Army Corp of Engineers campground is well maintained, long and spacious sites, full hookups and plenty of room to manage your rig. Many big rigs here. The laundry room is in despair with broken machines. Our site backed up right to the river with a nice view of the river in our back picture window. By days end, the park was full. OTA TV was good from Montgomery. Verizon HotSpot good and our T-Mobile cell good. We would definitely come back again. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in the Catoma Loop, which is the newer loop, did not go into older loop because it was closed for the season. The park is well maintained, the sites are well spaced so you are not packed in. Our site had full hook up and everything worked great. This is a beautiful park with a lot of history in the surrounding area. Would stay here again if we are ever in the area. If you plan on staying here the sites along the lake look like they all have a great view of the lake. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

As is in most COEs, our stay was very nice. I pity the poor gate workers trying to work a new computer system without much help. Did you know you can't stay at a COE if you don't have an E-mail address? We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Motorhome.

There are 2 loops at this park. The older, Antioch, loop has water & electric only with gravel pads and a dump station. The newer, Catoma, Loop has large concrete pads with full hookups and 50 amp service. This is a great value especially if you have the National Park Golden Age card. Tips for other Campers:

There is a lot of civil rights history to be seen in the area, in Montgomery and Selma. They have a great visitors center in downtown Montgomery which is a good place to plan and start your visit.

We stayed in the newer section of the park which is one of the best developed COE campgrounds we have visited. The campground is well planned with large, well separated sites and full hook ups. There was a good variety of sites to meet most csmoer's needs. While it is a 15 minute drive off major roads through Montgomery it works well as a one night stop while traveling through. We plan to return to visit Civil Rights Historical sites. Recommend you reserve sites well in advance at this popular park. We camped at Gunter Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.
