Decent value for the price, BUT, was told to ask for military discount when I got there and I did. But no change in the charge. The ladies at check in were nice, but seemed unfamiliar and confused with the computer check in process. When I ask for propane bottle at check in, the lady qualified was out getting her hair done, so I left my bottle. It was finally filled and delivered to my campsite B63 at about 5:45pm. Driving in to the campground, take the main gate. The back gate road is very steep and winding and you will have to make a hard left turn very close to the gate shack. At the main gate by the equestrian sites, be very careful as the gate shack has a large overhang and can damage your RV if you get too close. The sign to the RV sites was removed when I got there (5 miles from the main gate), so be on the alert for the road. Yes, the B loop sites are very strangely numbered and not in sequence. Ours, B63, was long enough for my 34' 5th wheel and I did not need to unhook. Not sure if I would stay there again, but was peaceful during the off season. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Had a great weekend at Oak Mountain. Great staff and great park. Busy weekend with a full campground. Roads good. All services worked great. Lots to do at the park, hiking, boating, and fishing. Only downside is that some of the sites are a little close together and hard to get into, but everything else was great. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a beautiful state park. A lot of amenities. The bathrooms were dated, and somewhat clean. Trail from our site down to the lake. Many swimming areas, with kayak and canoe rentals. A lot of hiking trails. Very close to Birmingham, although you can't tell. Very peaceful. Unfortunately, our site had a bunch of ants that ended up getting into our trailer. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham is a must see. Beautiful park next to it, and across the street from the 16th Street Baptist Church. Shopping at Publix and Walmart not far.

Rating park is a little difficult - there is good and not so good. Campground: I did not care for Loop B - sites arranged strangely and not numbered in order, and had chosen a bad site online (B31) - full sun, an awkward pull through and broken up pad. Luckily, there was another site available in A loop, which we loved. The roads and pads are in good condition and there was more shade in many of those sites. 30 amp was the max they have, but sewer in most sites.

The bathrooms are old, rusty, have insects - generally run down old campground bathrooms (one toilet missing door and had a shower curtain instead). Despite my choice of saying they were not clean - they were cleaned and stocked during our visit, it is just that it is not possible to get them clean. The bathrooms need to be remodeled.

Park overall is great. Hiking & mountain biking trails, the roads themselves are probably good for road bikes - but road was under construction. The park was out of regular maps, so they had photocopied maps that were nearly impossible to read. The trails themselves are marked very well, but planning was difficult without a useable map. We swam in Oak Mountain Lake at the campground. Water was warm in mid May. There is a swimming section and a dock - we found it very nice. We visited the Alabama Wildlife Center & visited with the birds and walked in the Tree Top Trail and saw the resident raptors - highly recommend.

Entrance - there are two. The main one is 5.5 miles from the campground (but closer to the equestrian campground). The back gate is closer to the campground, but has a difficult turn to make to larger rigs. It also has limited hours - I want to say 8am-8pm, but not exactly sure. The front gate is always open.

We would come back again, but would be more careful in the sites we pick. I hope the park can find funding and remodel the bathrooms and Loop B campground. I would give it 5 stars for sure then. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Stayed here for two nights on our way back to our home base near St. Louis. We stayed in pull through site 47. There were two major camping areas, A & B. We were in area A next to a building/pavilion that had a large brick fireplace sitting area then on the back side there's a laundry facility with 3 washers and 2 dryers for $1.50 to wash. The shower house was also adjacent to the campsite. We had FHUs, but this camp ground is only 30 AMP. This campground is a 30 AMPer and tent camper paradise with a large variety of sites from fairly secluded water and electric to pull throughs with FHUs. We noticed there was a fair number of Class As and assumed they have generators to run extra air conditioners as necessary. Since the weather was mild, we did fine on one air conditioner. According to the park info sheet, Oak Mountain is AL's largest state park at nearly 10,000 acres and located in the Southernmost part of the Appalachian chain. Trails are marked. There was a trail map for sale at the park store that also sells propane. We tried to walk the Beach trail but due to the heavy rain it was impassible unless you wanted to wade. We tried the Wildlife trail along the lake and walked until we went up a creek and was stopped by the creek being too wide due to the rain so turned around. Wildlife trail is a moderate level trail so ensure you wear proper shoes if you take it past the lake and up the feeder creek. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

My problem was that I had a lot in the Equestrian area of the park and entrance into the Equestrian is not marked and many campers including myself turn down the wrong entrance and have a difficult time turning around. The park is very nice and scenic. While we were there there was a lot of road construction. They have a lot of bicycling and walking trails in the park. Gas stations and Wal-Mart are nearby for any missing items. Fire rings were too close to the RVs to actually use. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Really have to see American Village in Montevallo. Recreations of Mt Vernon, the White House oval office, museum and historical recreations. Well worth the visit. Admission for veterans is free. Otherwise it is $10.00. Well worth the price.

Beautiful state park. Appears to be lots to do in summer time. Very nice area. Close to many grocery stores. Overall nice park. We would stay here again. If you have a larger camper be careful on which sites you pick. We had B63 which is a large pull thru. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We have stayed at Oak Mountain twice in the last month and have loved it both times. There is so much to do at the park like riding horses, hiking, fishing, walking trails, riding bikes, visit the farm and more. We stayed in B49 and B60. The photo is of B49.

When booking your reservation read the site description. It is very helpful. B49 said not recommended for slide outs but we have a small camper with one very small slide out so it was perfect for us. If you go after hours there is only one way to go in. It is off exit 240. Call and ask and they will give you directions. The staff was very nice. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful park.Rained the two days we were here but we will come back. Some sites are clustered together in odd ways in loop A not allowing for much privacy unless you are with a group. Would avoid them. 11-12-13 are all very close. 12 and 13 were plently large for our 37' 5th wheel but in the future would take spots 24 or 25 if you want full hook ups with more privacy. Loop B is more open with pull throughs but the sites seemed far more crowded. Good Verizon signal here as well. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This 10,000 acre state park is awesome. It has a lake, trails for hiking, bikes and horses, there is an archery range, campsites for RVs, trailers and tents. They even have a campsite for camping with your horse. And everything was very clean. We had plenty of space between us the and the neighbors. It was very quiet at night. Many of the RV sites have a separate area for a tent and fire ring. The property is thickly wooded with lots of shade. We stayed three nights in site #24 and it was nearly level. We will be back! We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This park has amazing views and lots of trails. We only spent one night at this campground but will definitely be back to see more of this park. We were able to get a campsite without a reservation and got our choice of either full hook up or electric and water hook up only. Both options had pull thru sites. The camp site was level side to side, but not front to back. But that is an easy fix with my electric hitch lift. We did have to unhitch our truck from the trailer as the hook ups for W&S&E required us to pull the trailer all the way to the front of the campsite. there was more than enough room to park the truck behind our trailer. The camp site has picnic table and fire pit and a nice grassy area between campsites. The restrooms were very dated and need to be upgraded. The Laundry facility in loop B of the campsite is CLOSED. I do not know if the laundry facilities in the other loops were working as we did not need to do laundry. The cell service is weak. We only had 1 to 2 bars for both Verizon and ATT. The road leading to the campsite is windy and steep but had no problem getting thru. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

A very nice and large park with endless options of things to do. We took B-19, a very nice end drive-thru that was mostly level and ample room for our road. The park was not full so we had plenty of room. It's just sad to drive miles into the park and then find all the campsites crammed together in one area. It's good for visiting Birmingham but quite a long drive in and out each time. We didn't use the shower or bath facilities. W/E is cheaper than FHU and age 62+ ask for the senior discount. Fri melt staff at the gate and camp store. We camped at Oak Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a large state park with many facilities like golf, archery, BMX, horse stables. Wish we had more time to explore! Used Oak Mountain as an overnite stop, and it was a welcome relief to spend the night in a secluded forest. Highly recommend as a good alternative to chain campgrounds. We love staying at state parks and this is a typical park built long ago before today's modern rv's. Sites were laid out oddly and not level. We picked up an ant infestation in the rv and dealt with it for a week. Trails are great as is the overall scenery. We'll come back to hike but not to camp.
