Large State Park with lots of space. About 40% of the 58 sites are right on the water. The land slopes gently into the water for most sites making it ideal to pull up a fishing boat or kayak right to your campsite. The sites are all full hook-up, and at a daily rate of $24 (no discount) for a premium site, it's a pretty good value. Good 30/50 amp power and excellent water pressure. Some of the sewer stubs are several inches out of the ground. Sites are all either concrete or asphalt with a rock apron or traffic area. They are spaced out well. This is an older park and some of the sites are short for longer campers which results in some folks parking across the site or on the side of the road, most site lengths are OK, though. There is one bath house for the campground which would be insufficient if the sites were not full hook up. The CG is relatively flat and "bicycle friendly". The bath house is old and a little out dated, but clean, stocked well and maintained. There are two washing machines and two dryers in the bath house entrance - $1/cycle, takes quarters. In the campground, Verizon service is marginal depending on location. Over the air reception is adequate. Tree coverage is fairly thick for satellite reception, but most campers with a portable dish were able to find a "hole" in the canopy. Ants and mosquitoes have been a problem when we have camped here before, but were not a problem this trip in the spring (late March). The State Park is large with multiple play fields, a good Frisbee golf course, lots of Geocaches, one good long hiking trail around the lake 3.5 miles (moderate). There is no swimming in the lake at the campsite, and I did not see a swimming beach at the Park. There is a real grocery store and fuel within 4 miles from the CG. - Bama Camper

This was a great state park. We had a spot right on Lake Lowndes. Great ranger that checked us in for the weekend. Very peaceful. A couple of problems; there were a lot of geese around the park and our spot had a lot of droppings to contend with, and there is a bad ant infestation. Had ants get in the RV during the first night and we spent the rest of the time fighting ants. The ants did not bite but caused a lot of stress. Appeared to be no problems on the other loop with the ant problem. - blonsk

A very nice place to spend a few days. The bathrooms/shower are a bit tired, but work well. Unfortunately, we parked over the top of an ant hill and had an invasion. A little spray of ant killer did the trick. Very peaceful and beautiful. - mcsnygg

Park was very clean and the typical great COE park. On the Tom Bigbee Waterway with occasional barge traffic and they are very quiet and not that often, but worth seeing. Part of the park was closed due to off season, but the larger portion was open. Nicely spaced sites with level concrete pads with water & elect at each site. Restrooms were super clean, not the newest, but far from shabby. Being off season the park was pretty much empty. Would deffinetly return. Our price reflects a premium site (on the water, not cross the road) difference was $1.00 with the Geezer pass. - garmp

Great campground. Staff was wonderful and helpful. Very quiet place to spend a few days. Needs a little updating, but still in great shape. - blonsk
Sep 2016 - $11.00
Typical COE park - good layout, well spaced. There are plenty of sites at this campground (176). All the waterfront sites are walk-up only. The waterfront sites on Riverside Loop are right on the water, however, there is a drop-off depending on water level so it would be difficult to access a boat pulled up to the campsite. Most of the waterfront sites on Waterfront Drive are like that also. The pull through sites 114-116 are back away from the water.
TV reception is excellent - all the major networks available. Verizon coverage is 2 out of 5 bars. The terrain is flat - good for bicycles.
Water pressure is high - bring a regulator.
Because of it's remote location, a large number of sites, and a large percentage of those sites walk-up only, this is a good campground to find a spot on a holiday weekend if you don't have reservations. - Bama Camper

we stayed in 45. it was unleveled but no big deal . the park was very nice and clean. it has a lot of things to do on the water. a lot of trees and a good fire ring. the only complaint I have is there was no Verizon or att service where we were. there maybe other places in the campground that has service. I would recommend staying there. - 1coolhall
Jul 2018 - $30.00
Our first trip in the travel trailer. We stayed this past weekend with 3 kids. They said we should come back and that's usually a good sign. We had site 24, across from bath/shower facilities. This came in handy so the kids were not in and out of the trailer. Had full hook ups. It has a beach area with roped of swimming. Paddle boats, boat ramp, playground. No cell service with Verizon but not a problem as it was good to disconnect everyone and have family time. The park ranger drove around several times and also let us know of a storm coming it as to be aware. There was a deck on our site with a nice big table, which I liked because we had space to set our chairs. Plenty of Shade through out park. - Threegrits

This park has so much potential its such a shame to see it seemingly so neglected by Alabama State Parks. It's being slowly updated (adding 50A and sewer to sites); but many of the sites are tiny and extremely un-level. Our site was paved and barely wider than the camper - stepping out the front door and you were stepping into the park road. The level left to right was off by a full 6". Driving around I saw several sites that were on such a steep hill a 5th wheel camper had the nose almost on the ground and the wheels a good 8-10" on blocks to get level. Check in and reservations are confusing. You have to pay to reserve a spot, but you are only guaranteed a spot, not a particular site. So even with a reservation and arriving mid-week; if someone else decided to extend their stay or just showed up with no reservation 5 min before you they can get the prime spot and you're stuck with the leftovers. Check in after hours was confusing as the after-hours info is on the back side of the booth and not visible as you enter. The only instruction plaque has a number to call for after hours assistance, but there is almost zero cell reception around the park. With proximity to Tuscaloosa for University of Alabama games, great beach and mountain biking trails, this park has a lot of potential. It's too bad to see it fall so short. - joshjack

This park is private and secure. A little on the primitive side but nice. It's a quiet area just minutes from town. Has views of the river which is quite peaceful. Woke up to sounds of nature, birds singing and even saw deer and squirrels. It was very relaxing. Mostly long term campers, working in the area, some with families, sitting around a campfire at night. Will definitely visit again! - Jared Woodall
