We stayed in site A6. Full hook ups and satellite service too Bathrooms were very clean with fire hose water pressure Beautiful park. Was told to be closed October 2019 for 6months for renovations - I would assume trimming a few trees that have overgrown some sites. A little difficult getting into site as there was an overgrown tree, which had been scraped before, was really close to where needed t0 back up. After several attempts we got the trailer to the right position to miss the tree. Site #16 looked much easier to navigate. We have a 29 foot travel trailer. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Originally booked site C-1. Upon arrival the breaker was not working and showed an issue. The park tried to fix. Unfortunately they had to shut down some sites to do so. We both agreed it would be easier to move. I then went to site A-6. It was tight to get into because of storm water concrete cover at the front wheels pivot point then a large tree by the right side front wheel but we got in. The next day we went to our originally planned site (it had 50 amp service) A-33. EASY to get into and had 5-8 ft to spare. All was well and the park volunteers were great! Clean and nice and quiet. VERY VERY shaded. We were able to get by for the first 24 hours on 30 AMP service because of the shade despite it was 90 outside. If you need satellite then A-6 i the site to use or the few next to it or across the street from it. C-1 and A-33 had NO satellite service. Very shaded park. Nice visit. This is a NICE state park. Stay at site A-6 or the few lots next to it or directly across the road from it for Satellite. If you are on 50 amp and only 30 is available, this place is WELL shaded so it does not have near the heat load as other places. We were in a 3 AC unit (18k BTU each) black and blue coach and were fine. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice people and decent location close to Florence and Huntsville and of course lakeside at Wheeler lake and a decent golf course in the park.

Campground badly in need of updating tho, pads are tiny and no gravel around the picnic table or fire pit. WiFi coverage is poor. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stopped here for a weekend on our way back home from a fall trip to the north because of the rave of others on this park. The park itself is nice with the lake, marina, golf course, lodge and restaurant but the campground was somewhat of a disappointment. Sites are wooded and set up for privacy but the pads are in poor shape. Mature trees that are braking the pads with the root system. You have to park just right to be able to open your slides and awning, not being able to use the awning. None to little ATT service and wifi. Campground says it has wifi but it doesn't. Over the air TV is spotty and too many trees for satellite. Been to quite a few state parks in Alabama and this one is rated towards the lower end. Think we'll pass on this one next time in the area. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

One of the best state parks we've visited. It is very well kept and the layout of campsites are angled for more privacy. The interior roads are asphalt paved and wide enough to easily navigate. However there is a sharp turn as your leaving the A loop. Just take it slow around the curve.

We didn't use shower rooms except during a tornado warning. the local emergency sirens sounded and the ranger began circling the campground with his siren on telling everyone to move to the closet shower building. he then stopped by several times to check on everyone, and give us updates on the storm.

There is a restaurant at the lodge, which is next to the marina, good food and service at a reasonable price. There is also a Day Use section with athletic fields, tennis courts, frisbee golf, etc. you can also have a picnic at one of the shelters there.

We enjoyed our time here and would visit again if we were back in the area. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Motorhome.

Beautiful, beautiful park. Lots to do; swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, golfing and very nice restaurant. Large shaded full hookup or primitive sites. Large 4 private stalls and 4 private seat bathhouse in each circle of sites. Can see lots of wildlife; deer, turkey and squirrels. Very pet and child friendly. Nice marina and several places to fish from the banks at the Lake. Our site was C009 and was right on the water. Will go back to this one often.. Tips for other Campers:

Grocery, gas, more restarants, and hardware stores close by. Within 3 miles you can buy fresh fruits and veggies straight off the farm during the growing season from a farmer's yard. Joe Wheeler TVA dam is something to see but leave the camper. Dam road is very narrow for 2 vehicles. Bait stores near.

We stayed in campground C site 6 in a class C. Our site was across the road from the lake, but we still had a good view and breeze. It was a full hook up site with no near side sites. Site 6 is sloped and we had trouble getting our 31' Class C level (our front tires were 6" off the ground!). We noticed several others having similar leveling problems. The sites across the street from us were all angled so you were watching your neighbors anytime you were outside. It was a very quiet park, well patrolled by volunteers.

Our site was between the primitive campground and the bathhouse. It was annoying because people cut through our site to get to the bathhouse. The trails were well maintained, but poorly marked making it easy to end up in the wrong place. Also some of the "drive-thru" sites were just wide spots in the road. The slides on the unit in C-5 were jutting over the road. The only laundromat is at the check-in station, which made doing laundry inconvenient. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Motorhome.

Clean and spacious sites. But you will do quite a bit of leveling. Avoid pull through sit A 5. It has a significant dip and looked some have really dragged going up into it. We stayed at A3-sewer would back up and over flow every time we tried to dump-reported the first time-thought it was fixed and it did the same thing again the next day. Had to use the dump station going out of the park when we left. If I stayed there again I would chose sites A2,A13 and A14 (30 amp service). Employees were nice and helpful. Bath houses clean but shower stalls need updating really bad. Paved sites. concrete picnic tables, fire ring. Had to leave a day early due to our car being involved in an accident on our way to a day excursion (not our fault-lady flew through stop sign on HWY 101). Rate it a 7 due to sewer issue. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Motorhome.

I have to admit, I thought Alabama was going to be a pass through state but I was pleasantly surprised with this park. Joe Wheeler is a park that has pretty much everything you could want in a state park. Full hookups, 50 amp, basketball courts, volleyball courts, tennis courts, hiking, biking, a swimming beach, disc golf, and a full 18 hole golf course with driving range and practice putting greens. Not all sites are full hookup/50 amp. I stayed in the A loop. There is plenty of room between sites, not a lot of foliage in between so the privacy wasn't the best but good enough to not feel cramped. The roads were in good shape and my 34ft Class A fit just fine into the back in w/out any trouble. The campground was very quiet even on weekends. This is not a party campground. Site accessibility (easy to back in, plenty of room, pull throughs also available) - 5 Campground location (20 miles off 65 but good roads) - 3.5 Nearby amenities (Shopping 30 minutes away) - 3 Site Privacy (spacious sites not a lot of privacy though) - 3 Campground amenities (Bathrooms/showers were very clean. Laundry was not easily accessible. Had to go to the front office) - 4 Dog friendly (Excellent walking loops and plenty of space) - 5 Activities (Tons to do, see above) - 5 Cost ($24/night for 50 amp full hookups..weekly rate) - 5 Staff friendliness (Tons of hosts..never seen so many onsite hosts. They were friendly) - 4 Connectivity (Decent signal w/out a booster for both ATT and Verizon. Decent OTA TV..ABC. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Motorhome.

Enjoyed our first stay. We had a tree beside our 32' RV that prevented us from opening our awning which really sucked. Toured the campgrounds and noticed a lot of sites had the same problem. Otherwise was a good place to spend weekend at. I would want easier access to water from campsite if I stayed a week there though. Great WiFi. Very good showers. Overall it was a nice stay. My family usually go down to Joe Wheeler a few times a year just for weekend get away's. Park was same as usually nice roads and fairly level sites. Only problem we had this time was site C-17, it has a tree that is really close to the pad and it prevents you from having your awning out and with a camper 32ft or longer you can't get backed up far enough to prevent this. I voiced my displeasure with having to move to one of the camp host and to the front desk so maybe they can take this tree down so this site can be used by all campers. I am aware that the state is under a money crunch in the state park area but there are things that need to be updated. Such as electrical supplies. The one on the site that we moved to was just worn badly and caused a loose connection on my power supply that caused it to overheat the plug, sewage drains need to be updated or at least cleaned out around them so it wouldn't be so hard to get connected. I know this seems like a bad review but its really not. All in all it was a good trip as usually but could be improved. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Approx 115 sites, most of them full hook up. A few sites are short, but most will accommodate larger rigs. The sites are fairly level, some with an overall slight slope front to back. There are only 4-5 sites on the C loop close to the water (150 ft.), the rest in the woods. Some on the B loop are on a ridge and have a very nice view of the river through the pines. Most of the campground is wooded with tall pines and a few hardwoods. Satellite reception is spotty because of the fairly heavy canopy. All utilities worked well and the roads are good. Good spacing between sites, but not quite as wide as a typical COE park. Most sites are 30 amp, there are a handfull of 50 amp sites on the A loop. Reservations for this CG are non-site specific at this time, however, there are plans to publish site lengths and pictures of each site on the website, and also allow site specific reservations by the summer of 2016. Bathrooms were clean and heated. There is excellent free WiFi in the park - coverage was complete, however, for some reason I was not able to connect to it. Verizon coverage here is 2/5. The kid's playground is physically separated from the camping area - something I think folks with younger kids would not be comfortable with. Joe Wheeler park is a large venue with a hotel, cabins, golf course, restaurant, swimming area, boating and an extensive day use area (basketball court, volley ball, etc). The day use area is separated from the main camping area. Many trails in the park. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Asphalt roads and site pads are in good shape. Mostly shady. Large fishing lake, good swimming area, restaurant in lodge. Water, sewer, and electric are in great shape. No cable service and Wifi is very iffy. The golf course is wonderful, played 18 holes for &25 with cart (price if yous stay there, normally $35. Sites are level and neat. There is a concrete table and fire pit at each site. I will go back to this campground. We camped at Joe Wheeler State Park in a Travel Trailer.
