Overall Rating:

This campground is a good place to leave your rig when driving to Kennecott and avoid taking it on the long dirt road, which can be full of potholes. Since it is 120 miles round trip, spend the night there before and after to allow the entire day for the trip and a Kennecott visit. It is also handy when fishing on the Citina River. It is a dry campground with a good toilet. There is no charge

It is located about 2 miles from Chitina on the McCarthy road, driving towards Kennecott. The first half mile is dirt, and the remainder paved using chip seal. After crossing the Chitina River bridge, drive a very short distance and take the first road to the right. Coordinates at the entrance are N61.52887, W144.40417.

There are no formal campsite locations, but I counted about 10 "sites" that have been used previously, judging from tire tracks and current campers. Some have tables. I don't know who owns the park, but judging from the rest room, a nice building with vault toilets, I assume the government, maybe NPS(Admin. note: Alaska DOT campground). Sites are in a grove of trees.

If all sites are full, turn left on McCarthy road, then veer to the left and drive on the gravel area near the river towards the bridge. Ahtna (a native American organization) has an easement and charges $25 to camp in that area. The easement is shown on a map on a bulletin board. Drive towards the bridge, and you are not on their easement. The boundaries are somewhat vague, but I have camped there three times and have not noticed any enforcement issues. It is an open area next to the river, which you may prefer.

I did not camp in the Copper River campground, but walked over there from Ahtna after a local mentioned it to me. I will camp there again. We camped at Copper River Campground (Alaska DOT) in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the Chitnia ranger station. It is in a 100 year old building, nicely restored with a friendly interior. Info on RV parks, lodging, etc. is available, and the ranger is very familiar with things to see, local history, and road condition. He has lived in the area for many years.
