We were looking for a place to stay in the general area that would be a bit out of town. We're self-contained in our 25 foot MH and don't use the facilities. We stayed on a Saturday night in early August. This is a nice CG with beautiful views of Cook Inlet and Mount Spurr. There are 53 sites arrayed in a loop. Most sites are relatively large and private. Some are more shady than others. Most are back ins with gravel/dirt parking spots and grassy areas with picnic tables. Most need some leveling. Some sites have views of Cook Inlet through the trees. The sites are primitive (no hookups). There's a pump with water with a boil water notice, no threaded hose for filling RVs. There's a dumpster for trash. There's no dump station. There are 2 free dump stations in Kenai and 2 in Soldotna. There's good ATT coverage and no Verizon coverage. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Saturday and were able to get a site. The CG was mostly and not completely full overnight. We camped at Captain Cook State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The rocky beach is a short walk away. There are several trails in the CG to the top of the bluff. There's also an interpretive trail in the CG.

This campground is even more beautiful than it was four years ago. Sites private, roomy, lots of wildflowers [and mosquitoes]. My site had a view of the mountains and the Inlet. Well worth driving a bit north of Kenai to visit. We camped at Captain Cook State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

An excellent place to get away from the fishing frenzy in Soldotna and Kenai. As you drive up here be aware of moose, particularly on the last ten miles. Slow down, the last five miles are pretty bumpy anyway. But as soon as you pull in the campground you realize the drive was worth it. Away from it all, atop a cliff over a beautiful beach (ten minute walk down) reminding me of Oregon Coast you pick a site and enjoy the privacy provided by the trees and shrubs around. If it wasn't for the occasional helicopter transporting stuff to and from the oil rigs it would be totally quiet. Pit toilets and hand water pumps are provided and the camp host sells firewood. Sites are somewhat unlevel. Picnic table and fire pit in each site. Unlike stated in other reviews, we didn't experience any mosquitoes, lucky us ... We camped at Captain Cook State Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

This state park was remote, very attractive, and had lots of mosquitoes (more than lots). The sites are all dry and back in; perhaps 1/4 would accommodate our 36 ft RV. Only pit toilets and no showers. We found a lovely site and were able to get level and stayed two nights. Could hardly see the people in the next site for all the vegetation. A hike to beach was great and the tidal fluctuation fascinating. We camped at Captain Cook State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Per the previous reviewers, this campground is about the view. Note however, that the views are not available from the campground itself. You will need to walk a short distance for the view (and also to the beach). The camping spaces are along a narrow road in a thickly wooded area, and very few of them (if any) seem level. Also, there are no pull-throughs that we saw. Only a few of the back-in sites could tolerate a 40' RV, and then it would be tight. And keep in mind that the thick woods will mean lots of mosquitoes. So, be aware of the trade-offs. Also, if you stay here and do go down to the beach area, be aware of the tide patterns for that day and don't assume that you can just watch the tide coming in and beat it to shore. We camped at Captain Cook State Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE VIEW!!! This is a beautiful SRA (state recreational area). If you camp on the side overlooking the bay you see snow covered volcanoes across Cook Inlet. It is magnificent. You can hear the tide coming in and out. It is a peaceful, quiet park. You are enclosed in cattle parsnips. Restrooms are vault toilets, there are no showers, but there's $5.00 wood and campfires. And THE VIEW! You can go down and walk along the beach and enjoy the coast line. STAY AT THIS PARK. We have recommended it to several people and all have liked it. Oh, one other thing: watch out for the black bears. One was shot getting in to a person's camper just last week!! The view is worth it!!! We camped at Captain Cook State Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

This is a nice park but it is 25 miles north of the town of Kenai. Good road except for a short distance. We camped at Captain Cook State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.
