Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

We are in our early 50's and full time RV'ing. We stayed here in May of 2019 on our way to Texas. We liked it enough to stay here on our return trip as well. The facilities are clean and well maintained. According to park staff, Arizona law requires your sewer hose to be supported off of the ground. Subsequently, the park requires it to so be prepared with the appropriate support. We spoke with two different office staff and both were very pleasant. They have an observatory which is different but experiencing it was a pleasant surprise. Being able to look at star clusters and planets was a good use of our time and a great way to meet fellow travelers. It can be a bit noisy as the turret moves and it can take a bit of time for each person to see the different sites. I think we were there for about two hours but you should feel free to leave whenever you've had enough. We stayed because it was a good experience and we didn't regret staying for the whole time. There is a Safeway and ACE Hardware within walking distance which was good if you needed food items or needed something to fix your rig. The WiFi is good, especially if you are close to one of the many towers within the park. Trees blocked our satellite view but the sites along the outside of the perimeter allow for a clear view of the sky. You may be able to maneuver your rig in a way that allows for a clear view of the southern sky even in an interior site but the trees in our particular location didn't allow for it. There are sights to see in the area like the town of Tombstone or caves for exploring so do your research before you come here so as to know the attractions and proximity. We would stay here again if our route brings us this way. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Fifth Wheel.

This park was recommend by friends. Very nice park. Wanted to see the observatory program but it was closed during our visit. Yes, trains nearby, horns and all. We didn't find them all that objectionable but understand others may not like it. Very friendly and helpful staff. Due to length of our rig, we had to disconnect our trailer and use a wide space on the end of the row. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Motorhome.

We had a nice spot on asphalt with parking on rocks for the toad. FHU 50 amp with free WiFi at the site. Good satellite reception, good Verizon. Observatory was awesome with a great telescope. Arrived to find that there were no spots for the evening tour. Asked for one spot, and there was a cancellation so able to do the tour. Rercommend when you make the RV reservation to make the observatory reservation at the same time. We used Passport America, which gave us a 15% discount per night. Observatory free if staying in the park. There is some train noise. Three nice dog runs, which are well maintained. We would stay here again. This park is extremely clean and there are lots of activities to do. The management staff was excellent and very welcoming and helpful. The sites are difficult to get in and out of unless you are an experienced driver especially with a bigger rig. The only downside is the train close by. The whistling is VERY loud and continues throughout the night. Even with two fans going I was woke up on occasion. If that doesn't bother you then it would be a nice place to stay for a week or more. Lots to do in Benson and this park has a nightly viewing of the starts with their own small observatory. That was a fantastic experience and one of my husbands favorite things he has done while on the road.

This Campground is wonderful, very nicely laid out and the staff are so very warm and welcoming. Easy to navigate just make sure that the entry signs are read do not go into the park that says NO Entry. This park is great although the people who live here do disregard the beauty of the Campground. We only stayed one night and was horrified by the speed of ATV's and vehicles that drive around the park and also take short cuts into the park by entering via NO ENTRY, very dangerous. Sadly it was cloudy so no observatory show, maybe next time. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Nice RV park with an observatory. Easy access from I-10. We stayed in sites that were paved. Many of the sites were graveled. The sites were a little short. If the toad was connected, it hung out a little into the street. The roads were easy to navigate. The internet worked well. They had a nice fenced dog run, but it was a little small. However, there was an open area across the street that had dirt roads that went on for many miles. If you have a satellite dish on your roof, access is hit or miss because of the trees at the sites. We had a portable dish and had no issues. The club house and banquet hall are very nice. Unfortunately, the pool and spa were being renovated so were not available for our stay. When the night sky is clear, they have an excellent program in the Observatory. They have a nice breakfast once per week. We would come again. Expect to do a lot of driving to go see all the sights. We had a RV rally and went to Kartchner Cavers, Gammons Gulch, Tombstone, Bisbee, Douglas, Chiracahua National Monument and the Cochise Stronghold. Our favorites were Bisbee and the mien tour, and Chiracahua National Monument.

We're just ending a 2 month stay here, and hate to leave. We're full timers and this is one of the nicest parks we've stayed in. The park is nicely landscaped and easy to navigate, the sites are a generous size, and everyone is friendly. We made a lot of friends here. Everyone on the staff is cheerful and efficient, and they keep the place immaculate. There are always activities available in the clubhouse or banquet hall. Pool and spa are under construction, but almost complete. They just added a 3rd dog park. Short walk to shopping and the Post Office. We booked for 4 months next year. Can't wait to return. Tips for other Campers:

We loved the Friday fish-fry at the Horseshoe cafe. The Kartchner Caverns tour was great. Near Tucson, the Saguaro National Park was beautiful and the Sonoran Desert Museum was very unique and enjoyable. We took a day trip to Bisbee where we enjoyed lunch at the historic Copper Queen hotel and then did the mine tour. Last but not least, I'll add a shout-out to the Butterfield staff who were very helpful.

Things I didn't know about Benson AZ: 20% of the railroad freight in the USA passes through in 60 trains a day. That is impressive. Except at 3 AM. We stayed at Butterfield RV Resort for 10 days and although the tracks are ¼ mile away, they sounded like they were going right thru the middle of the park. That's really the only negative thing to say about this otherwise perfect desert park. It is one of the best managed parks we've stayed at and the staff is super friendly and efficient. The park is immaculate with wide paved roads and sites and crushed gravel between nicely spaced sites. FHU is towards the back of the site which requires some extension tubing for sewer. They have a pine tree planted on every site...on the south side...right where your rooftop sat dish is. Portable sats would be fine and the cable selection is good. Impressive list of amenities included golf driving nets, putting green, pickleball court, full sized observatory with nightly shows, rec room, club house and kitchen, library, fitness center, pool and hot tub. Winter snowbird season had a full calendar of daily activities. All in all and excellent experience, and you even get used to the trains. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Benson is a great home base to visit the S/E Arizona area. Tombstone is 23 miles away and a fun day trip with lots to do and see. Bisbee is mining boomtown with a cool undergound tour at the Queen Mine. Saguaro National Park is very cool with more cactus than we've ever seen. Military aircraft boneyard is nearby at Davis Monthan AFB and has a daily tour but requires at least 10 days for reservations to conduct background check. Plan ahead! Lots of wild west history in this area.

Overall Rating:

I should have read the other reviews before staying here. If I could change staying at Butterfield RV Resort for the 17 days we paid for a premium site, I definitely would, even making the extra miles into the Tucson area. Here are the reasons. 1. The observatory is a joke. Just a large telescope in a dome. I can see more using my binoculars. We made the 1500 mile trip and the telescope was broken waiting on parts, then a super letdown on the quality of the site when it was repaired. 2. The water pressure was so low, that we had to fill our tank every day, and use our pump to take quick showers. 3. The WIFI is so slow that you can't use it, so virtually none here. The manager said that the park was full, but its poor engineering and planning. We were 6 spaces from the office and WiFi antenna. 4. Most people travel with pets, the rules here are too stringent to be pet friendly and taken to the extreme. My dog urinated a foot into a site corner and I was disciplined and lectured even though I apologized. So, if the dog pen is occupied you better make your dog hold it. 5. The pool and hot tub were advertised but under construction, so those amenities don't exist here. 6. This park is up for sale, possibly because it is in a HIGH train noise area. The trains run all day and night blowing their horns and car traffic is heavy so road noise is almost as bad. 7. Customer service is nonexistent, the office and park staff are not responsive. Mark this one off my list. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Motorhome.

Very clean park. workers daily remove any loose gravel from black top. 2 dog parks are raked and sanitized with pet friendly bleach 3x a week. People bring their dogs to dog park strictly to do their business - although very clean, I felt like I was in a litter box. It's not an area to play ball with your pets. Average sized RV lot and very nice people including staff & full timers. Pool and jacuzzi are being replaced and have been large holes during our visit. On site observatory with a nightly program that is free. Benson has a lot to offer. Many beautiful murals with hidden objects to keep one busy. Small town restaurants and a good location to visit other sites. As others have mentioned the trains are a nuisance. 60+ trains (east & west bound) go through Benson a day. 20% of all US international trade passes through Benson. Yep, had to Google stats because the trains are SO loud you can barely talk. Also, learned quickly on our first day that our dog who squatted on the curb near the street sign was against the rules and the work camper told me he now had to sanitize the lot. He wasn't on a lot but rules are rules. He told me he can do his business in the middle of the road (which he would never do) and to pick up. We are in the middle of the park so now we run him to the dog park to ensure he doesn't pee elsewhere. As senior citizens this isn't easy to do. Everything about this park is 100% professional, friendly and borders on sterile it is so clean. After 3mo we are finding that we don't notice the trains as much. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Motorhome.

I'm still trying to figure out how this park got such high ratings. The staff was nice, check in no problem. We only stayed here two nights while visiting Kartchner Caverns. The sites were arched making it hard to pull in and level the RV. We had to park our car at an angle in the gravel area as did everyone else in the park. The roads and sites are all paved which makes it nice. Our site was at the end of one of the streets making the train noise loud especially at night. Wow! $19 per night with Passport America membership...and a free program at the onsite observatory!!! We were able to view Saturn and its rings, Mars, Andromeda, etc. The "workcamper" amateur astronomer was fantastic and informative. The campground is extremely clean, if somewhat sterile in appearance. There were some trees, but for some reason, even though it was off season, the lady at the front desk assigned us a site in a treeless site, and right next door to the only other camper in our row. If you want a tad more privacy, when you check in, it might be a good idea to ask for a space away from other campers. The park is off the freeway and off the main drag in Benson, but very conveniently located. And, it's only 10 miles from Kartchner Caverns. Notwithstanding the odd campsite placement by the front office, this is a very nice campground. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Truck Camper.

Whatever you do, try Mi Casa Restaurant in Benson. Absolutely fabulous Baja California style Mexican Food that features an excellent presentation of the meal. The owners have kids, so they decided to spend as much time as possible with the kids as they grow; hence, this delightful eatery is closed every weekend. Don't miss out--you won't be disappointed.

This resort is very clean and would be a good place for a one night stop as they are just a mile or so off of I-10. However, the sites are either gravel or paved asphalt. We had a pull-thru paved asphalt site that was too short and not level. There was just enough room for our 42' 5th wheel but we had to park the truck in the site next to us. Thankfully we were here at a slow time of the year and the resort was mostly empty. When checking in I was told no wood burning of any type which also included my pellet smoker, as pellets are made of wood. The reason given was that some people find the smell of the wood burning to be offensive. In three years of full-timing this is the first time I was told I could not use my smoker/grill. Glad we are only here for a few days. There is also a train that can be heard every few hours at all times of the day and night. Verizon cell service was good. Wi-Fi was terrible. We camped at Butterfield RV Resort & Observatory in a Fifth Wheel.
