Spent 3 days beginning of May to enjoy the lake, let the dogs swim, and for the "maiden camp" of my new to me 5th wheel and truck. Second time to Roper and always enjoy the peace and quiet, swimming in the lake, and letting the dog cool off as well. Can be too hot with minimal shade after May, but swimming in the lake can help! We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: December, 2018 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

The camp hosts, and there were more of them than campers at this time of year, said that December is a quietest month of the year here, and that proved to be very true for us. Site #15 faced the lake and offered great views through our windshield of all the birds. All the sites are very spacious and level. The park was very well-maintained and clean. The showers were large, clean, and had plenty of hot water, but the shower building itself was not heated, and it was warmer outside a few times than inside. The interior park trails are nicely kept, wide, with good walking surface (semi-packed sand) and pretty vegetation all around. The "island" area of the park is great, with a swimming beach area, though it was too cold for that during our stay, picnic ramadas, outdoor showers, horseshoe pits, and great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. There are several places to put in for boating/fishing. It was too chilly to kayak, but in warmer weather, I certainly would have. The natural hot tub, however, is no longer hot. The VC volunteer said it stopped working sometime within the last year, and they have no idea when or even if it will ever be hot again. Safford is a short drive from the park for all major amenities, and there is a large propane dealer along the way, as well. The lady working the office of the propane dealer sells her farm-fresh eggs, too! The Coronado N.F. is close for some good hiking opportunities. Inside the park we saw several water birds (blue heron, coots, egrets, ducks, mergansers), other birds (yellow-winged blackbirds, vermilion flycatcher, hawks), coyotes, and jackrabbits. We got three OTA TV channels, the park has free wifi (spotty), and we had 2-3 reliable bars of Verizon 4GLTE (good enough to stream on my phone.) We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Good Dish Satellite but no OTA reception. Very Quiet. This is my 4th stay here. Local town of Safford has a Walmart, Safeway & Home Depot for shopping. It is a beautiful state park. Located on a lake with mountains surrounding so the view is great. Nice places to walk and enjoy nature. Good idea to make a reservation because since this is an older park and they don't have as many long spots for RVs. They were full when we were there. We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a nice park. The spots are pretty spacious. The bathrooms are dated but clean but I wasn't much impressed with the showers due to low water pressure. The bathrooms should be heated! It was freezing even during the warmest time of day. The hot tub was nice (not terribly hot though). We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The Dollar General on Hwy 191 sells wood for $5 a bundle. Better deal than the Safeway in town.

This is another nice Arizona State Park. It's well-maintained and clean. It's along the shore of small Roper Lake. There are lots of birds to see and mountains on both sides of the campground. Mt. Graham and the adjacent National Forest area are well worth the drive for an illustration of the effects of elevation on vegetation. We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I have visited this park in numerous visits to Arizona and found it real nice, peaceful & clean. This place went downhill fast! It seems understaffed and the restrooms are the dirtiest I have seen in years. Showers are thirty year old and barely work with insects and roaches everywhere. They have a natural spring hot tub complete with green slime and boiled bugs. Watch you don't break a bone or two as you slide down the algae covered steps! The park isn't patrolled after dark so prepare for groups of drunks preventing you getting any sleep! 30 bucks a night is just too expensive for what ya get here. Drive on folks! We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Very clean and nice park. We have stayed a few times to visit friends in the area. Love the hot tubs, but expect a number of locals to sneak in and use them after the attendent leaves the main gate. There is a fishing area and a swimming area of the lake. Not great fishing and water is muddy but fun for the kids. There is a $5 fee for booking online. We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We camped at Roper for 2 nights. The park is about a 2 hour drive for us, so it made for a great mid-week trip. We parked in Hacienda Loop, space 35, a pull-through space with water and electric, and very near the lake. It was chilly and windy, but we enjoyed our stay. The campsites are level and spacious, the grounds are attractive and clean, and the wildlife is amazing! We will be back! We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

The State Park Rangers and volunteer staff are courteous and helpful. The sites are paved with 30 amp electrical and water. Some sites have shade. There are two loops with electric and water and one loop for groups and cabin camping. Az. Game and Fish stocks the lake on a regular basis, non-gas powered boating is authorized on the lake. A swimming area is located on a peninsula in the lake. If you like hot springs a community hot tub is available during the day and evenings. I will camp here again. Verizon wireless signal was good. No WiFi or cable. Dish satellite worked well. We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

An exceptional state park - large paved sites have shelters with table and fire rings and many back up to the lake. Facilities are extensive with community hot tub, swimming beach, boat launch, and fishing docks along with three camping loops. There are well-groomed trails throughout the park and bird watching is exceptional. Good Verizon cell and data, and clear views to the satellites. The volunteer staff was friendly and the visitor center has a nicely stocked gift shop. Our only complaint was that mosquitoes were abundant near the water and at night, and the speed bump on exiting is unnecessarily high. Otherwise, an excellent park. We camped at Roper Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Mt Graham, the highest mountain in Southern Arizona can be visited on the paved Swift Trail. Amazing views along the road with heavy forest and streams near the top. The Gila Box Riparian Area is worth a visit although the road is narrow and winding. One of the best Mexican restaurants we've been to is in the little town of Soloman, a few miles east of Safford.
