Overall Rating:

This park north of Fountain Hills is our favorite Maricopa County park. If you want the feeling of being in the wide open desert but with hookup (W & E) sites, this is the park to go to. There is generous spacing between sites like we've never seen at any other place. We reserved 6 months out for February. It was full during our stay. Loops are paved. Sites are gravel and wide. In #61 the picnic area was behind and had a concrete table, pedestal grill, and fire ring/grill combo. There are many trails at this park easily accessible from the campground. The visitor center is small but has some interesting things for sale. There are ranger programs to attend. There is one dumpster and recycling bin (aluminum cans only) per loop plus one by the dump station. Our top picks for sites are: 6, 46, 48, 50, 61, 69, 70 (view of dumpster). We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

There are many trails. The Pemberton trail seems to have the heaviest bike use. Be careful if you are walking on it.

We love it here. The views are tremendous. We prefer the south loop (sites 45-80). This is a very clean, well maintained county park. The trails are amazing. We came to volunteer for an ultramarathon being held on the trails in the park. We got plenty of running and biking in while here. I had very good connectivity for work on AT&T and Verizon. An earlier reviewer remarked about the planes, but I enjoyed watching them. The park is close to services in Fountain Hills, Tempe and Phoenix. I had to travel for work and it was easy for me to get to the airport. We will definitely stay again. It is a great place, and the staff are very helpful and friendly. We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

While we were there, there was both a mountain biking event (one weekend) and an ultramarathon (the other weekend) happening in the park, so if you are in to either of these things, this is the place to be.

We stayed here while visiting the Scottsdale area. The camp hosts were very helpful. Our camp site was immaculate all the way down to rake designs by our fire pit. Didn't have a chance to use the bike trails but will definitely be back. Great place! We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Our second stay at this wonderful county park. Maricopa County has to have some of the nicest, prettiest parks anywhere. Water and electric only, but nice dump station in the park. Very nice spacing between sites with many sites having no view of neighbors. The sites are plenty wide with picnic table and fire pit in the rear, but they are not overly long. Our 43' RV fit, but without much room to spare. The only downside, if you can call it that, is the park is far from pretty much anything. Fountain Hills has a really nice Safeway, but like everything else there, prices are high. Decent Verizon signal and no problem with sattelite reception. Lots of hiking and biking trails in the park. We wanted to stay longer, but the park gets pretty full on weekends, so plan ahead. We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Information signs are typical brown with white letters showing signs of age. Very difficult to see and read. Site spacing is fantastic - park nearly full and we could only see six or seven other RV's. Our space #61 strangely shaped in that entrance was just barely wide enough for toad and coach and other end was much wider. Be careful selecting site. I saw several that were probably long enough for 30 footers but half was a steep grade/ramp up. Shower water was HOT with no adjustment. Entrance booth seemed to be closed most of the time. Check-in at nature center (closes at 4 PM) a couple miles from entrance. Overall we enjoyed our week stay. We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Another return visit to this convenient and beautiful campground. Same spacious sites with plenty of room between your neighbors. Immaculate rest rooms and showers. Water and power functioned normally, although we are now int he habit of always leaving the water filter as well as the power meter connected. Camp Hosts frequently about in their carts cleaning common as well as individual areas. Plenty of great trails for hiking, biking or horseback riding (we were there this time for the AZ High School MTB races on the Competitive Track). Community dump at the entrance/exit to the campground with 2 stations. Stunning views of 4 Peaks and the Superstitions Mountains to the east and the McDowell mountains are your back door to the west. We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The popular Thoms Thumb trail head in the McDowell Mt Preserve is just a short hike to the west. If you get a site on the far south area of the camp ground, you'll get to see the fountain at Fountain Hills at the top of every hour during the day.

This is the second time we have stayed here and we would definitely stay here again. The sites are very spacious, quite some distance from each other, very quiet, and the views are great. This is not your typical RV park but more like "camping". We had a long pull through site which easily handled our 40 foot motorhome and tow vehicle. We had to use additional blocks to level, however. Electric and water at site, no sewer at site, and no wifi. The park is 8 miles out of Fountain Hills, which requires a lot of driving if you are doing city activities. But we definitely find that it is worth it! We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

A lot of very unlevel sites, we tried for 30 minutes to get our 40' bus level, unsuccessfully. Thankfully they had another level site & allowed us to switch, for a $5 fee. 50A power, nice views, good playground for the grandchild, lots of hike trails. Very far from civilization(other than Fountain Hills). Nice spacious sites, well maintained. Dump station only, no sewer at sites. Water quality is "Arizona Terrible", lots of mineral content. We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Very nice, very quite, regional park. Sites are level, although a bit on the short side. If you don't need a pull through site, I wouldn't recommend them...basically just a wide spot in the road. Plenty of space between sites with beautiful mountain views in every direction. With many miles of mixed use trails, this is a very popular park for mountain bikers. Great trail access from the campgrounds, but with the number of bikers, I wouldn't really call the trails dog friendly, and certainly not off leash (leash rules in affect). We found Stoneman Wash a great location to let dogs off leash to run (under voice control at all times of course). Trails are well marked, mostly rolling hills, and easy, so not a great hiking area if you like more challenging trails. First time here, and will be back. We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We really enjoyed our stay at McDowell Mountain. Most of the sites are quite spacious, the restrooms and showers are top notch, and there are many miles of walking/hiking trails which we explored with our dogs (the park was very dog friendly). The views consist of mountains and desert as far as you can see in every direction (at the top of each hour you can see the famous Fountain Hills fountain to the south). The area was very quiet except for an occasional airplane overhead and the evening and morning coyote howls. During our stay we saw plenty of rabbits, jackrabbits, and some roadrunners, and one coyote. The campground has two loops, with the south loop having more spacious sites. We were in the north loop which we thought was perfectly nice too. ).The campground accepts UPS and FedEx packages for campers (pick up at the visitor center), but not US Mail. We are definitely looking forward to staying here again! We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

It's a 10-15 minute drive to nearby Fountain Hills which has all the stores and restaurants anyone could want (though gas there is expensive, as mentioned in other reviews. If you want to receive US Mail, the nearby Fountain Hills Post Office accepts General Delivery mail.

We have stayed here five times over the last 4 years. Owned and operated by Maricopa County, this is our favorite place to camp in Arizona. We are staying a total of 20 days. Some people spend the entire winter here changing sites every 14 days. Whoever designed this campground was a genius. Sites are spaced so that there is plenty of elbow room. Sites on the apex of the circles effectively leave you with an unimpeded view. Campsites are level chip seal with concrete picnic table and grill. There is no sewer connection, so plan accordingly. We use a tote for grey water. The shower houses are the cleanest we've ever seen at a campground. Always plenty of hot water. They are unheated which can be a bit "brisk" on winter mornings. Utilities all good. Our AT&T cell and hotspot worked well. Campground and McDowell Mountain Park is filled with abundant wildlife. Bring your birdfeeder including a hummingbird feeder. McDowell Mountain Park has 55 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. There is even a competition mountain bike trail. Park backs up to the Scottsdale park system expanding the recreational opportunities. Good park maps available at the park headquarters where there is a small gift shop and displays. Park patrolled by Maricopa Sheriff. Watch your speed on entrance road. We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Gas and diesel are a rip off in Fountain Hills. Best Safeway in Arizona. Don't miss the Frank Lloyd Wright museum. Drive into to Scottsdale and eat at Chompies deli. You'll think your in New York. Skip the local casino. It is dingy and smoke filled. There is no laundry in Fountain Hills. Also good hiking in nearby Cave Creek.

Another New Years visit to this park to get away from the crazies in town during this holiday. Took a pull thru for ease of parking our new class A but will probably get a back in next time as all sites are very spacious. Impeccably well maintained park with friendly gate keepers and camp hosts. In the midst of many trails for hiking and mountain biking. Will definitely stay here again. We stayed here while visiting family that spends much of the winter in nearby Fountain Hills. We ended up staying 10 days and it was amazing. The sites are huge and spaced far apart, making for the most privacy we've ever experienced as I can recall. The camp hosts were very kind and helpful. The park is impossible to reach by phone, but the online reservation system was a breeze. Thank you to Maricopa County for building this spectacular park. Because of this terrific experience, we are planning our trip for two weeks in 2013 and will be visiting from Oregon every year. Sitting outside, under the desert sky at night is priceless and something every RV owner would appreciate! We camped at McDowell Mountain Regional Park in a Motorhome.
