We stayed here for a quick get away at the end of the summer before school. Arrived at 4pm quick check in. Staff was great. The site was large and had hedges on both sides very private. The site was compacted dirt and was dusty. We got a premium ocean view site so pulled the rig in facing the ocean. The beach was down about 120 steps so its a hike up and down so bring everything with you. Lifeguard tower was operational. Beach was great (Stay away from bluffs as they have collapsed in past). Showers were good, private stalls for the toilets. They have a paid dump $10 which worked great. Overall great stay. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Motorhome.

We have stayed at this campground on holiday weekends for 25 years. Yes, it is crowded but for the amount of people the staff does a good job keeping it clean. They do have some sites with full hookups but near to impossible to reserve them. You must book these 6 months ahead for almost any weekend. Half the campground is beachfront and the million dollar view is awesome. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is just another example of the failed attempts made by CA state to bilk dollars from campers while providing only the basics at a ridiculous price. Most sites, including ours, are nothing but dry, powdery dirt that tracks everywhere. Views are nice, but you are up on a high cliff, so accessing the rocky beach is not an easy task for some. Once again...no dogs allowed on the beach. Our site was in a row of eight empty sites, so we got one good night's sleep before some inconsiderate neanderthal rolled in the next morning twenty feet away and set up his mega-camp. Camping etiquette rule number two, broken again. Homeless people in the site across from ours didn't make for a great experience either. Lastly, the campfire smoke will nearly choke you out if the wind isn't just right. Skip it. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Motorhome.

Two rows of campsites in this park, those directly on the water and those one row back separated by a road. We stayed both this trip. You definitely want to be on water if you can. You also pay more. Most all of it dry camping with a few exceptions. You will pay more again for hookups. All the sites are in high demand. We saw all sizes of rigs in park. Small tents to large motor homes. Our 28ft travel trailer fit well. The ocean view 180 degrees. Beautiful. Lots of road noise from outside the park. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

If you consider that you're paying for a view of the ocean it's not bad. Otherwise its a LOT of $$ for dry camping - you can camp for free up the road a bit on BLM land in the CA desert. Park is clean and well run. If you can get in there and want to be in town its fine. Did we mention its dry camping for $50? LOL. Get to the dump station early. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Motorhome.

We stayed here 2 nights in a travel trailer at site #27 on the ocean side of the park. Had a great view of the ocean and sunsets. The sound of waves crashing on shore drowned out most of the road noise of Highway 1. It was handy to I-5 and the beach is accessible from the campground. The only complaint was that they shut off the water for pressure testing just before check-out time when we needed to dump. They could have waited until after check-out time. We backed the 24' trailer in and could park the truck next to it. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

Great beer on tap and food at The Compass in Carlsbad. Tried surf perch fishing with no luck but had to leave before actual high tide. We showed up at 2 p.m. and checked in without reservations which resulted in us setting up an account on our smart phone. In the future we would make reservations before hand.

Overall Rating:

Beautiful, very large site at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Great area to bike. Groceries a mile away. The only reason I didn't rate this a ten is its pretty pricey for dry camping. There is a little noise from the road, but you can park sideways on your site, close the windows on the road side, open them on the ocean side, and you will hear nothing but the surf. Got free wifi from nearby Hilton with antenna. Cell signal ok, Verizon LTE surprisingly dropped off a few times, but still had 3G. Stunning views. I would note, as have earlier reviews, that the rave reviews for this place really only apply to the ocean side sites - the sites on the other side of the road aren't nearly as nice, and they really should charge a lot less for them. There are a few sites with utilities, but they are the narrowest sites there, and you cannot park your rig sideways to the ocean on those sites. There are water spigots everywhere in the campground, but they are just faucets, not proper RV connections. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Motorhome.

Beautiful ocean view from the edge of a cliff. Easy access to the beach. Almost like a private beach, as in not crowded. Some wonderful sunsets, we saw many dolphins heading north. Staff were very friendly. Had to make reservations about 6 months in advance, and it was worth the wait. We had no hook ups, but water, restrooms, showers were nearby. First time without hook ups, but it was not as bad as we thought. Glad we had a generator for the A/C. Look forward to a return visit. Our site was a little narrow, but still very enjoyable. Tips for other Campers:

They don't let anyone in before 2PM, so there was a line and kind of a mad rush to get it. It put a little pressure on us to hurry up and back in quickly, as it caused us to road block a few minutes. There is a shopping center close by with room to temp. park your RV while waiting in case you arrive early. There is a variety of places to eat and a hardware store as well that has RV stuff.

The campground is in an ideal location on the beach with easy access to anything you need. It was clean and well maintained. However, the water was off in most locations due to the drought. Hopefully with all the recent rain, they will turn the water back on. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Motorhome.

We were able to select a site with a view of the ocean and right next to the stairs to get down to the ocean. Felt nice and private. There are washing stations to rinse off your sandy feet as well. The showers cost tokens (which we were totally fine with), were nice and very private.

Generators are only allowed from 10am to 8pm which was unfortunate (we usually cook breakfast around 8am).

Very friendly, nice on-site convenience store (you can even rent body and surf boards).

Lots of people, hardly any vacant sites. The sites were large. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If your GPS takes you to the CG directly west from I-5, turn right when you get to the entrance -- there is a u-turn which slingshots you back so you can get in. Do NOT turn left! No entry.

We stayed in an ocean side site and the view was beautiful. Our site wasn't very level, but I think it was just that site as others looked fine. We were in a site with no hookups, but a water spigot was right across the street. In fact, water spigots and bath houses were plentiful throughout the campground.

The first night we were there, the people in the site next to us sneaked in outside guests and partied and played the radio til 1:00 in the morning. They were pretty loud but fortunately I was in a trailer and it wasn't too bad, but still rude and inconsiderate of other campers. I felt sorry for the people nearby camping in a tents and the people across from us who had little kids. To my surprise, early the next morning the park ranger evicted the party crowd, so beware, they do enforce quiet time rules. Other than that the campground was quiet and peaceful. It was a great place to walk on the beach and ride bikes. The restrooms were plentiful and cleaned often. It was relaxing watching the surfers and we saw dolphins and seals playing in the water.

Unfortunately, the next night it rained heavily and our campsite turned into a duck pond with 3 to 4 inches of water covering at least half of it. It was still raining heavily in the morning so we just packed up and left. So between the party crowd keeping us up and the rain, it wasn't the best of trips. I'd like to go back some day and try it again though. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Fifth Wheel.

This is an older park which is just a little shabby, but if you can get one of the ocean front sites. The views are spectacular. Many of the sites are so wide you can park your rig sideways or at an angle to the ocean. The sites are literally right on the edge of the bluff with a 180 degree ocean view right outside your door! This campground gets busy on weekends in the winter with families and groups of surfers, but it was not very noisy and never felt very congested because of the size of the sites and the openness on the ocean side. I imagine it is full all summer long. The sound of the ocean drowned out traffic and generator noise pretty well. I would return here in a heartbeat, but only on the ocean side. If I were on the other side of the road, I would rate it about a 6. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Fifth Wheel.

This is one of our favorite state beaches, primarily due to the ocean views. The ocean side sites are much more desirable than the sites that back up to the road. Navigating the narrow roads can be challenging, so drive slow through the campground due to many children running around. It really could use the sewer dumps relocated to a not so congested area, but that would be difficult. I will stay here again. We camped at South Carlsbad State Beach in a Fifth Wheel.
