Great national park right next to visitor center at start of town. Walk to everything. Great cell service. Water and bathrooms easy to get to and new. Plenty of first come sites. Huge Forrest with asphalt roads. Tight but doable. We have large fifth wheel and carefully navigated. We stopped and talked with host to get idea of easy spots for large rigs. 165 was a large front spot close to water and bathrooms. Great location to walk into town or bike. No tv but cell so good we streamed live networks and Netflix easily. Great hosts, very helpful. Bigger rigs can go to old shady directly behind this camp. Plenty of first come sites. 14 day stay limit. We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

New & Old Shady Rest are 2 separate CGs right across the road from each other and just behind the Mammoth Lakes Visitor Center on the main road into town. The are both FS CGs & the nice thing about them is you can walk into town & restaurants from both. They are older CGs and, as the other posts mentioned, navigating through them & parking for anything over 30 ft can be problematic. We usually pull into the Visitor Center & leave the RV in the lot & first drive the loops with our toad to find a suitable spot. These are both heavily used CGs, so I would recommend arriving well before the weekend if you are in a larger RV as your spot suitability may be limited. Be aware that as of June 2016, some of the other FS CGs are closed due to flood damage and the VC told us New Shady Rest will be FCFS all season. I think handling the campers from the other closed CGs will add to the demand on these CGs. Otherwise, the sites are mostly heavily treed and leveling can be a challenge. Hosts on on-site and very helpful & friendly. We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Motorhome.

Had Reservations over the Independence Day Holiday. Reserved 8 spaces for both travel trailers and motorhomes. Beautiful campground, all sites are shaded and in the forest. Problem is getting your Rv in the spaces. We reserved all 34+ foot spaces but were unable to back in to any of the spaces because of limited room. When the photo shows the space, be cautious. You do not have room to back in with larger Rv's. I would recommend this Campground for any RV less that 25 ft. We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This park is right off the main road into Mammoth Lakes which was perfect for a base camp for the area. We visited Devils Tower NP and Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and smaller area sites. Although just off the main road, we were in the back of the park and it was quiet. The park was clean and seemed well run although we had no reason to interact with the hosts. The bathrooms were fine. There are no showers or hookups. I heard as I was leaving that showers were available across the street at Mammoth Mountain RV park. There is a dump station that the park has outsourced and it costs $10 and has water fill up as well as dump. We had enough room between sites but not a lot. We had a little trouble backing into the site because of the dumpster located across the street at the toilets, so I would camp one site to either side of our site. Our site was asphalt but this option is not available under Site Surface. We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

This campground is very close to Mammoth Lakes: drug store, food, groceries, book store, etc. Being just out of town, it is relatively quiet. Visit the Visitor's Center adjacent to it for good touring information. For example, the guide told us how to go to Bristlecone forest on paved roads rather than the dirt road our GPS suggested.

This is a large, basic campground behind the Forest Service welcome center in Mammoth Lakes, California. There are no hook ups, although there is a dump station that you can use for an additional $7. The sites are large and mostly flat. They each have a fire pit and a picnic table. There are plenty of restrooms and garbage bins scattered throughout. The restrooms have running water, and while older, are extremely clean and well stocked with toilet paper. The park is "dog friendly" in that they allow dogs, and there seemed to be a lot of them. The park does not have available waste bags. We really enjoyed this park. Even though it's large and there were a lot of people, it was immaculately clean, both the sites and the bathrooms. The hosts were friendly and helpful. We were really impressed with the size of the sites as well. The only reason I gave a 9 instead of a 10 is that there aren't any showers. We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a great campground in a pine forest close to Mammoth Lakes. Roads are very narrow and winding and most sites take a bit of maneuvering to park. Wood available at host sites. No showers but you can go across the street to another campground. Weather is cool in the evenings here even in summer, bring blankets! Tons to do in town from biking, hiking and fishing to eating and bar hopping. Plenty of grocery stores and gas stations. Just under 2 hours to Yosemite Park. Lots of places to hike and dog walk adjacent to most campsites. Overall campground is quiet and shady. USE THE BEAR BOXES, THERE REALLY ARE BEARS HERE! We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Very centrally located along main street: just behind the Visitor's Center. This was a friendly, and well maintained campground. Spaces were private and among pine trees. We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Had site #27 or #28? Large enough for my 37'MH and small toad in front. Great location in town close to all shops and eateries (McDonald's across street within walking distance). Quiet throughout the day and evening. Has lots of trees and gets real dark when the sun goes down. I was able to get a satellite signal and Verizon cell worked fine. Dump station at entry and water fill. Fairly well shaded and spaced well from other sites. I would and will return! We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Motorhome.

We loved this campsite so much we canceled Mammoth Lakes RV ( see review) and decided to dry camp here for 6 nights total. The Rangers were extremely friendly and accommodating. The spots are shady and big, lots of room for kids to run around and some terrific bike paths from the campground. We can't wait to go back to this campground. Perfect location, perfect atmosphere! One minor exception is that there are no showers available here. We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Travel Trailer.

A beautiful forestry campground on the edge of the town of Mammoth Lakes. The campground is near many good restaurants, a large county park, bike trails, and shopping. Wonderful, helpful camp hosts. A tremendous amount of bird and animal life. No showers, but flush toilets, that are kept very clean. Not a good option for big rigs, but great for tent campers and small RVs. They do have a dump station. The rate is $9 for anyone holding a federal pass (Golden Age, etc.). We camped at New Shady Rest Campground in a Truck Camper.
