Location is great. Steps from a beautiful beach and a great central location for exploring the central coast. The campground is pretty much a parking lot but all the hook-ups were in good shape and the beach is close enough to make up the the lack of greenery in the park itself. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Sunsets are amazing here. The small town of Cayucos is within 5 minutes where you can browse through the antique shops, get a great bowl of clam chowder from the famous "Duckies Chowder House" or some scrumptious cookies from the "Brown Butter Cookie Company". Morro Bay Marina is just a few minutes away with lots of small shops to explore and some great seafood restaurants. Old downtown San Luis Obispo is approximately 20 minutes away with some great walking and nice restaurants and shops. San Simeon with Hearst Castle is approximately 30 minutes away and a great viewing area to see the elephant seals just 2 miles past that. The small artsy town of Cambria is 20 minutes away and if you're into wine tasting the Paso Robles wine district is a beautiful 40 minute drive away.

This place was filthy and basically not taken care of. Once grass areas were all wore out to dirt with bits and pieces of trash scattered in. The rear dune hill behind the FHU concrete sites has a huge squirrel problem, 100's of them and yes they get into the belly of your RV. This park is open to anyone from the the road that is atop of the dune that runs above the FHU sites. Surfers and Joe public were constantly crossing the hill to get to the beach. This also included some homeless people as the sun set and park ranger was gone. I very rarely lock all bay doors but I did here and slept with one eye open. Sites are very small and seems like rules are are ignored. Never again. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

Parking lot at the beach but paved and level sites with full hook-ups. Sites are narrow as they are at most beach parks. Busy with a lot of turnover in the dry spots but everyone was quiet and nice. Ocean view and you hear the waves all night. Windy with the tides, saw several pop-ups destroyed in the afternoons. No fires allowed in the back in 50 amp spots so if that's important to you then dry spots are best. No dogs allowed on the beach but they are just north of the park and there's an off-leash area near Morro Rock. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

We loved this park. It's a parking lot, but it's right on the beach. You can hear the crashing surf and it's a short walk to the water. Facilities were clean. We didn't have hookups. Dry camping is closer to the water and that was more important to us. It wasn't crowded in November. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Fifth Wheel.

Combat camping in a corn row ... but ... it IS on the ocean. The nightly fee reflects the

Distinguished Veteran Pass that gives us 'free' fees for camping for all Calif State recreational locations. This is a special California category of pass. Nice level concrete for full HU's. No shade, but again, it's the beach, not the forest. Fab utility hookups, EZ access. Stayed 2 nights waiting for an RV rally to start in town. Would stay again. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Full hook ups on a California beach! $58 isn't so bad. The sites are VERY close. But that's what you get. You have to reserve many months in advance for a prime season like summer. But Morro Bay beach is worth it - beautiful and not too crowded. The concrete pads in the new full hook up section are very level. The utilities are, of course, top notch. The bathrooms are a bit sandy, but generally clean. The park staff were pleasant but not much involved. All full hook up sites are back in at an angle. It was no problem getting in. But I felt like I should say "excuse me" every time I walked past my neighbor's unit. You must unhitch and park your TV next to your RV. I was within inches of the windows in their slide. Cell service was very good and there are no trees if you use satellite TV. The non-utility sites are parallel parking and very exposed to everyone that walks by. I would happily stay at Morro Bay Strand again. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Travel Trailer.

This was an excellent beach side campground. Easy in and easy out. Our RV is 37' with 4 slides and fits perfectly into the space. Steps away from the beach and far enough off the highway so no road noise at all. There is a local city trolley that comes by several times a day that will take you into town and bring you back. Sites a somewhat close but at an angle so it was fine. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

An expensive but very nice state park - one of our favorites for the year! It used to be a parking lot so it's not fancy by any means; however, the park is right on the beach. We could see the ocean from our windows, some days better than others depending on if another RV was blocking the view. The site we were in was a back-in with full hookups. The full hookup sites are staggered which is a bonus for helping maintaining views of the ocean. These sites, however, are close together so there is no privacy. It was surprisingly very quiet. There is a small hillock behind the full hookups which helped buffer any road noise. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets! The park was not crowded in December although it filled up more on the weekends. Be prepared for wind - it was windy just about every day. And I don't mean a light breeze. The WII FI was really slow to the point of being useless. Great Verizon with 4g 4 bars. Directv satellite coverage was also perfect. There are two camp hosts that alternate time and all of them were very friendly and helpful. We loved it here! We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

There are several seafood markets downtown plus an avocado farm (yum!). Spencers is a local grocer that carries a surprisingly varied amount of products. There are also farmer's markets every week.

As with most beachside campgrounds, the attraction is not the campground it self but the proximity to the ocean and attractions. With Morro Strand, this is no different. We have camped here 5 Labor Day weekends in a row with a group of 5-6 other families. Prior to last year, when they upgraded the campground to have full hook-up sites, you were assigned your site upon arrival so it was a lot easier to bunch everyone together. Now we need to make all of our reservations at once to ensure that we can camp within the same part of the park. The plus to the facility change is that generators have been banned (and they DO enforce it), so the campground is a lot quieter than it used to be. Also, now that we have a trailer, we will be very happy to take advantage of the hook-up sites! The BIGGEST negative about this campground are the bathrooms, which are always filthy, even at the start of a 3-day holiday weekend. Won't be a big deal for us anymore (hooray for trailers!) but it was definitely a drag to have to use those nasty bathrooms several times a day. Tent campers beware. There are no showers here but you can use the coin operated ones at the Morro Bay State Park campground, just 5 miles away. We have stayed at both campgrounds and prefer Morro Strand as the access to the ocean, Morro Bay, and the San Simeon coast are so good. All hook-up sites are on the East side of the strand, but the best sites overall are the ones on the West side that have their own walk way to the beach. Note that this beach is NOT dog friendly, but there is one 2 miles up the road that is. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Tent.

Tips for other Campers:

The park is right next to the beach, just on the outskirts of Morro bay but in a residental area. Campground host and ranger were very nice. Paved paths allows for bicycling and walking. Your tow vehicle is parked side by side to your trailer so spaces between sites are very close. Enjoyed some excellant beach walking while staying here and had great views of Morro Rock.

Overall Rating:

About a year ago the state added many new full hook up concrete RV sites. The campground flier indicates that the full hook up sites are limited to 40' or less in length. I do think that you could fit a 40'+ rig though, as there is 8-10' of space in back of the rig after the concrete pad stops. They are back in and are wide enough for the rig and a tow vehicle. The back portion of the parking area is dirt and is where the picnic table sits. The sites have 50 amp, and the water pressure is remarkable, especially for a beach location (my on board regulator was easily pegged at 60 psi). The full hook up sites are $50 a night. There are many dry camp spots available as well at $35 a night that have a 24' max length. The beach is a short walk down a path through some areas that are being regrown with native plants. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on any of the beach areas in this State Park, so Fido needs to stay in the campground. Our Verizon air card worked really well here, but no park WiFi is available. One really surprising point being that this is a state park is the absence of any handicapped facilities. The campsites themselves are easily negotiable with flat smooth surfaces and small rolled curbs, but that is about it. There are two bathroom facilities, one at each end of the park, but neither is handicapped accessible. In spite of a crude asphalt ramp, the doors into restrooms, and on the stalls themselves are not ADA compliant. There are also no shower facilities here. The campground flier states that fact, but indicates that by showing your receipt for this campground, you can drive 6 miles south to Morro Bay state park and use the showers there. Not very convenient. But if you don't need showers, or Handicapped facilities, I can highly recommend this campground. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

We were staying at a very nice private park nearby, drove by to check out this beachfront primitive camping we had used decades before. FHU's as of 4/1/2015 I'm told. Immediately we checked ReserveAmerica for availability. Weekends, even in February, even Super Bowl weekend, were pretty tight, but we managed to get a full week (which we subsequently extended). This is the first Cal State Campground we have used since we moved to multi-slide rigs pulling a dinghy 15 years ago. We want FHU's (50 amp) with satellite TV clearance with campground etiquette rules enforced. About time California started putting some of my tax money into its parks! This place is gorgeous with back-in sites providing a panoramic view of the Pacific out of the front windshield of your motorhome. It is not sheltered from the heavy winds that do occur in the area. Perfect? Until the group showed up Sunday afternoon in the tent area blasting music as we left for dinner. Unbeknownst to me at the time was that the campground hosts & park rangers were on them immediately. Kudos to the state for this awesome upgrade & the park personnel for enforcing the identified rules. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

This campground is in a stunning setting, behind shallow dunes right on the beach! The campground is kind of basic, But the state is currently upgrading the campground and installing 55 sites with full hookups. Grading work has already begun and hopefully the state will do a good job. This place could be dynamite! We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

Great location, just over a dune from the beach, but this is essentially a parking lot where you park along the curb. There is a sandy area just over the curb, on which you can set up chairs, etc.

There are no hookups, no showers or dump (both available at Morro Bay State Park, a few miles away). Staff very friendly and helpful, but not a very pleasant experience (esp. at $35/night plus a $7.50 reservation charge). Location is the only thing going for this location, as currently configured. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.

I have camped at this campground since the 1980s. The setting is beautiful. There used to be outdoor showers, but those were taken out a few years ago. We still love the park for the setting. A trolley takes you into town on the weekends during the summer. Kids love to walk to the tidepools. We camped at Morro Strand State Beach in a Motorhome.
