Stayed at this park to visit friends. Our site was across a 2 lane road from I-80. Loud all the time. Use your earplugs! The pool is not heated so was too cold for me. They have a small grassy, fenced dog area that our dogs liked. Be sure to park your car with traffic. If you don't, various police agencies patrol this private property and ticket cars regularly. - Go often

This park facilities and sites are well-maintained, and there is a small dog run in the back. The park is primarily for full-timers who have gated yards, and it only has a couple of overnight spots. All spaces are incredibly small and close together, the roads have tight turns around buildings and brick landscaping walls, and we had trouble backing in our 34' motorhome onto our gravel pad, especially with all of the full-timer's vehicles parked opposite our site and everywhere else. At check-in, after a long day of driving, the owner talked to me--at length--about how they don't allow dogs anywhere but the dog run and how anyone caught with a dog relieving itself anywhere else on the property would be immediately asked to leave with no refund. Our site was as far as it could be from the dog run, and the roads were freshly paved, black asphalt in 90+ degree weather. We used the dog run once, but the roads were too hot for tender paws. We had to take our dog to the side of the freeway feeder road, near our site, where there was speeding traffic and a rocky surface with no grass. On the bright side, the little lawn outside our motorhome was immaculate. I can understand wanting to maintain the beauty of the park--and it was beautiful--but we felt like the management was constantly watching for any potential rule-breakers, and it didn't make for a welcoming atmosphere. Also, $55 for a tight gravel pad right next to the freeway is a bit ridiculous. - The Farrells
Apr 2008 - $32.00
This is an older park, but it is being maintained adequately. The campground host was very helpful. There is some disparity between the name in TrailerLife directory and the campground's website versus the park signage you actually will see when you drive up. Either it is *becoming* "Sacramento Shade RV Park", or it *used to be* called that, but as of today's date (4/2008) it is "Oak Haven RV Park". Although the park is close by the highway, the park is actually pretty quiet. VERY convenient access to downtown Sacramento, Old Town, and Arden Mall. This park seems oriented more to full-time residents than transient RV'ers. - JimF

Nov 2018 - $45.00
We stayed 1 night while traveling through the area. This is our second stay. The park is a short drive along busy multi lane city streets from BUS I-80 (Exposition Blvd exit from the South or Arden Way exit from the North). Access from any of the other major highways requires extensive routing. Using the street address in GPS will only get you to the main entrance of the Expo grounds. Access to the RV park is on the SE side of the Expo grounds off of Ethan Way. There is a sharp incline to get into the park which shows some scraping marks in the pavement. Registration parking is a single file line at the office. The interior roads are paved or gravel. There are some tight turns to maneuver through the park. The sites are a mixture of back-ins and pull thrus. The paved portion has a pretty good slope. Saw some MH's with front wheels off the ground to get level. The gravel portion is flat so really no leveling issues. Distance establishes privacy between the sites but there wasn't much distance between sites. They have full hook ups - water, electricity (50/30/20 AMP), & sewer. The sewer connection was above ground level in a concrete island with the other utility connections so establishing a downhill flow could be difficult depending upon discharge point. No outside tables or fire pits were provided. Stay limit of 30 days in a 60 day period. Not much to obstruct satellite reception in the gravel area unless along the South row where there was a line of trees. The park brochure listed 8 OTA channels - No cable. Didn't try to get any OTA. The park provided WiFi was adequate but occupancy was low. It was password protected. Didn't try our Verizon WiFi hotspot. Used our NET10 phone with good reception. There was one designated fenced pet areas with a grass surface located in a corner of the park. There were tools and can for waste in the fenced pet area. There was a snake warning posted for in the pet area. Laundry cost seemed expensive and couldn't extend dry time in increments. Laundry room was only open when the office is open. Checkout time is 11 AM - $10 fee to stay past 11 AM. - bsb814

This is a basic park whose principle feature is location. It's an open dirt & gravel lot with good hookups and security at a reasonable price. - MSTraveler
Oct 2018 - $45.00
This is an RV park that uses the extended parking lot of the Cal Expo fairgrounds and offers a graveled area for back in and pull thru camp sites with FHU, 30A/50A, water and sewer. The parking lot sites are sloped so leveling may be a challenge for some. The graveled area is fairly level with extended pull thru sites. My 40' plus 18' trailer fit in my pull thru site #519. The RV park is located at the rear of the fairgrounds so following your GPS route should get you there. This is a no-frills park but close to Sacramento venues, shopping and restaurants. The registration desk is manned by camp hosts and are very pleasant and helpful. There are several camp hosts spread throughout the park. Trash containers are available in each section of the park. Sites are close but still not intrusive. Awnings can be deployed without interfering with your neighbor. Open skies are available for those with satellite dishes. OTA TV is also sourced from Sacramento and all the major channels are broadcast. It is fairly quiet but a train whistle can be heard occasionally and is not a bother. I would return when in the area. - kihei7

We stayed here for 2 weeks due to good reviews on the internet. We called, made a reservation, and had no problems.. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We were put into a very large and shady spot, and we had no problems. Rate was very affordable. We would stay here again. Was very close to everything we wanted to see and do in Sacramento. There was a lot of stores and restaurants nearby. - avonjudy

Do not even pull in to this campground. It's noisy at all hours of the night with motorcycles, loud cars, and fireworks. The homeless people wander through the park night and day digging in the dumpsters and stealing anything that's not locked. My daughter lost her bicycle. The Wi-Fi will not connect and only shows 1 bar when it shows anything. The only thing going for this park is friendly staff and the price. - possumtrotky

May 2018 - $70.00
The campground is lovely - lots of trees and shade. However, the campground is located right next to the freeway (less than 200 feet away) and you are constantly assaulted by nonstop road noise. The campground does have many amenities such as a pool, pond for fishing, picnic areas and a nice store. If not for the road mouse, we would rate this as an 8. - prmin
May 2018 - $70.00
For $70 for a full hookup for one night! It's a bit excessive. Unfortunately, in this neck of the woods it's the only game in town. The roads are winding and narrow, the site was just long enough for the trailer. We had to park our truck perpendicular to the trailer to stay part way out of the road. This morning we will have to ask our neighbor to move his truck so we can get out and on the road. Site was not equipped to have a truck parked with the RV. I am handicapped and cannot walk very far. I suppose it's OK for one night except for the price. However, in my opinion all KOA's are way overpriced. - USTravelers
Jul 2017 - $59.00
We stay here whenever we visit our kids in Folsom. It is 12 miles away, but it is about the only game in town except for Folsom Lake campground. First, the good: it is a KOA, so the staff is professional, friendly, and very well organized. Service was excellent, as we have come to expect at KOA facilities. The pool was lovely, but crowded on the weekend. It looked clean. And, they recycle! This is very rare in campgrounds, strangely. There was a trash can and a recycle bin right by our campsite. Now, the bad: The park is going for a "rustic" look, and, it is a desert, so everything was crisp, dry, and brown. Roads are narrow and twisty. Also, no one guides you to your site, which is unusual in a KOA. They give you a decent map and show you where to go, but the campsite numbers are stenciled onto the electric boxes in small, faded numbers, so you have to get out of your rig to go see them. Our site was way off level. (#64). One wheel was off the ground. There is very limited car parking. We were just able to squeeze our Jeep in between a large tree and our sewer. Our electric box was broken and my husband cut himself badly on it when the lid fell on his arm. Also, the 50-amp plug in ours was cracked and broken. It worked but it didn't look safe. We will return, but we wish there were more alternatives in the area. - SusanRon

Sep 2015 - $1.00
We actually didn't stay there. We were told by the Asst. Mgr. that it was first come first serve, no reservations. When we arrived the manager said they were full up. The manager was very nice and sorry about what we were told. Due to it being a gated park, we had to drive through to be let out the other side. Please note this park is not set up for large RV's even though the Asst. Mgr said it was. It is mostly filled with live ins and 1/2 the park is mobile homes. It is in a really bad neighborhood. - judyk
Aug 2009 - $33.00
This place is ok, sort of. It's one of the few places around so, any port in the storm. It's in a bad part of town but they do have a security gate. Mostly permanent residents with what seems to be a bunch of illegals right outside the gate milling around waiting for the bus. The office staff was nice to us. Our site was gravel but it was level. Showers were old but clean. Wi-Fi was good, fast and never dropped out. Camp here if you have business in the immediate area - -otherwise I'd suggest that you find another spot. - Jake67
Aug 2009 - $32.00
It was a pleasant surprise to find a park where we had adequate room to back into a space without fear of hitting anything. All hookups were in good condition. The Wi-Fi worked great. Spaces are rock with a concrete patio with table. It would be a little dusty for long term stays. Shade is only on long term sites. The people here were very nice. - The Alberts

This is a 55+ mobile home park that also rents RV sites. Very nice and quiet. Managers are very friendly though the site we were in was right up against the permanent mobile home next to us. If you like quiet, safe, reasonably priced ($175/wk), convenient location, this is the place to be. Downside, not much space for sitting out in front of RV. - DonnaandPete

May 2018 - $40.00
We stayed here for two weeks, preparing for a long trip. It is very central to Sacramento & has shopping nearby. We were the only ones not "long term" and it seemed like there were lots of working residents. It was one of the flattest spots we have ever had! We were parked near a very busy road, so rather noisy during the day but OK during the night hrs. Quiet in the park itself tho. Laundromat was good and reasonably priced. Park WiFi basically worthless and hardly ever worked. If you need a place close to downtown Sacramento, we can recommend this. Its not a place for a lovely vacation, but it worked for our purposes. - mazbarth
Nov 2014 - $40.00
We came in for a short stay on a weekend with our 37 ft. 5th wheel and two small dogs. Knowing the park office was closed for the weekends, we called ahead and nice young lady took our info and explained the do-it-yourself check in system that was set up at the office. Upon arrival we noticed how close to town the park was and the level, paved aisle-ways of each row. Not a shred of grass in sight or a dog run, the pups would have to "ruff" it on the gravel rocks for a few days. The park itself was simple in its layout and live-in residents seemed friendly. Sights were level, easy alignment to back into, and RVs are parked on packed gravel with updated concrete patios. The traffic noise in the surrounding area was considerable but again, we were here on a weekend. This was a decent stop for a quick business trip. - RVLife4us
Jun 2012 - $15.00
As others have noted, it is a big shame on the capital of California that there is not one decent park in the entire area. All the parks are a compromise either in location, facilities or cost. This park is in an economically depressed area of West Sacramento with the potential for danger. WE have heard gun shots at night, we see gang members walking by at night and do not feel safe. We were parked in site 2 upon arrival and had our rear bedroom (escape hatch) window smashed by a rock throwing teenager. If you come here, do not allow them to place you in site 1, 2, 3 or anywhere against the west fence facing Glide Ave. Although they are larger sites and most often used for the larger motor homes and 5th Wheels you are seriously at risk for vandalism by teenagers who walk by every day to and from the high school south of here. Bicycles have been stolen at night inside the park, all personal belongings left outside are at risk of theft, and any bays left unlocked are at risk of being rifled. Teenagers wander around the area late at night looking for mischief. The owners have covered themselves for any liability in extensive legal language on the rental agreements. They refuse to take any precautionary steps like providing security or putting in taller fences to protect client vehicles. Emergency vehicles with siren noises are common in this area all hours of the day and night. There is no place to walk any dog except on busy Glide Ave which can be quite dangerous at night with traffic passing at high rates of speed. This park is not worthy of a city the size of Sacramento! The sad thing is there isn't anything any better. - ALFA Maytwins

Oct 2018 - $60.00
We often visit friends in the area, and have unsuccessfully tried to get a reservation here before. They have a lot of full time residents, so sites for just a few days are scarce. If you call, they tell you that they don't accept reservations until 30 days in advance, but on their website it states 60 days in advance. This time we were able to reserve online, and stayed here for 4 nights. The park is very nice! Lots of trees; sites are very private, with big hedges on either side. There was a big grassy area to walk dogs; would have been nicer if it was fenced, but we were happy to at least have grass there as the entire rest of the park was paved. We enjoyed our stay there, but had a weird occurrence the last day. As we were unhooking and preparing to leave, one of the managers came around to our site. He said he wanted to let us know that whenever we were gone, our dogs were barking the entire time. I was surprised to find that out, as they are usually quiet. In fact, when we came back to the site after dinner out, they were quiet as mice, only barking when they heard our car door slam. The guy at the next site was outside, so I went over to ask him if he'd heard barking, and he said that yes, he had sometimes in the evening, but not much. He told me that the manager had come a couple of days before and asked him about it. Apparently someone had complained, but we were on the end with just the one neighbor so it's perplexing. Bottom line, we would LOVE to have known sooner, so we could do something about it! We don't want to hear barking dogs ourselves, and we can't understand why they waited until we were leaving to say anything. Otherwise, I would probably have rated them higher than I did. - MarvMarvs
Sep 2018 - $50.00
Due to some mechanical issues we did not make reservations and the office was closed when we arrived. We checked the "open" sites and decided to walk first before driving our rig, glad we did as the roads were very tight with low branches so was not big rig friendly. we also learned that when arriving late you will not be given codes for restrooms, lounge, etc. Also note that the water pressure was very high. - Al and Anne-Marie
Dec 2017 - $52.00
Here to visit friends in area. Wide backin that we parked truck next to. Looks like a certain amount of long term but things look neat and clean. Shrubs and fence on 3 sides of our site. WiFi provided. Good Verizon 3G. Would definitely return. - smitty12

Dust and dirt. The restrooms were not cleaned very often and were dirty. The park is right on the river and if you are there to tube, should be good. If not, don't stay there except maybe one night to visit Marshall gold discovery park and visitor center. The road into the park is very twisty and not worth doing unless you want to stay and tube the river. Constant stream of tubers going down the river and then back up through the campground to start over again. IF YOU ARE NOT THERE TO TUBE-DON'T GO. - Phoenixaway
Dec 2014 - $40.00
I stayed here with a group, so rate is reflective of this. Overall, this is a nice park. We were there when a school group was there and it was not a problem except not being able to use a hall during one day (we were told it was ours Thurs.-Sun). At my site (E), the power could only be accessed by literally lying on my stomach...and then having to use levelers so that the plug stayed in! The campground was very focused on building new cabins...would like to have seen more effort in removing the mud! Front desk were very nice. - nicholsm

This is a pretty nice park, its kept clean and the trash it removed every day. We were in site 66, nice view just a bit challenging to back down hill into the site. Restrooms and showers were great, nice and clean. Staff was very helpful in all requests, This park is very close to Marshall gold Discovery State Park, fun place to visit and explore. Lots to do here swim or take a river ride and Placerville is just up the road a bit. The only suggestion is some of the roads in the park need a bit of work. Be sure you are very confident with backing your rig down a somewhat steep hill into your site. They do have a few sites on the lower level of the park. - Lizard
May 2017 - $65.00
We stopped at American River Resort for just 3 days. Access to park was fairly easy, navigating within the park is a bit tight. Our road was extremely steep, so I had to take time to back in, but it was pretty level after that. Hookups were IMO in the wrong place, closer to the front of the motorhome than the rear, and the sewer pipe was higher than ground level. 30amp seemed okay as we occasionally used the a/c (but we have a tiny motorhome). Office management was okay but beyond basic paperwork, they weren't much help. Showers/bathrooms were clean and fairly nice. WiFi was worthless as we could not get a signal. Verizon showed 2 bars but it was obvious that the cell tower is oversubscribed, so, not a lot of Internet connection capability here. There were a LOT of tent campers, a lot of whitewater excursion activities, which was to be expected. We would likely look for an alternative place if we were to come to the Sacramento area again. - RobtL
Aug 2015 - $65.00
This "resort" is lost somewhere in the '60's. It may have been wonderful when it was first opened however it is severely run down. There are very few full hookup sites and there are none with 50 amp service. Given the extreme temperature changes in this area, it made for an uncomfortable stay. But perhaps the two most disturbing things were the $10.00 extra per person AFTER two campers and the deplorable condition of the shower/restrooms. Almost everywhere we camp today does not charge for additional people until AFTER four campers. We were shocked that we had to pay 60.00 dollars extra (three days) for our eight and ten year grandsons!! On the other hand, this is a great place for tent campers by the American River. But, keep in mind, this is NOT a camper friendly management. It's as though it's a hobby for them and frankly, the only person I saw really working was the guy emptying the trash cans. Sorry, we camped here once before (about two years) because of the catch & release pond and thought we'd give it another try. Jury is in, won't be back. - J. Kohl
