Overall Rating:

The campground is along the Colorado River. However, you cannot see the river from the campground due to vegetation. The lower campsites are among the trees, and as you go up the hill the vegetation quickly thins out to a scattering creosote. Most of the sites are spread out (more dense among the trees). Sites have a fire pit and a concrete table. Many of the sites come with a shade pavilion. Sites are pretty level with room for trailer and vehicle. There are pit toilets and one composting toilet. I counted only 4 bathroom areas, so it is a trek from some of the sites. There are nice solar heated showers in the lower part of the campground with space for parking. There is no cell service here. Ask the campground host where you can hike to or drive to, if you need to check-in. There are water spigots and a dump station. The CG is 24 miles north of Winterhaven, CA. (You will want to get gas and stock up in Yuma.) The first 6 miles are paved. Once you cross The Great American Canal, the road is gravel. It is graded for 2-wheel drive. The road two lanes wide. There are a couple of blind corners where the road does get a bit narrower. The grades are gentle. A couple of spots have some wash-boarding where it is a bit steeper. As you get closer to the river the road goes through some washes, so be careful of flash flooding, especially in monsoon season. Allow a good hour from Winterhaven to the CG, more if you like to get out and take some pictures. There are two boat ramps near the campground. There is an area to put in canoes and kayaks. There are campsites for the boaters. There are picnic sites at both docks for day use. This is a great place for birding. Lots of hikes and 4WD roads. Picacho was a mining town. Most of the ghost town is now under water due to the dam. People come here to fish and swim as well. We camped at Picacho State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.
