This is a typical US Forest Service campground. Beautiful location, low price, no amenities. The campground is built in an aspen grove, a few miles outside of Aspen. As things go, it's probably the cheapest place to sleep near Aspen. Most of the people at the campground when we were there were there for a concert in town. Regardless, it was nice. Beautiful. Quiet. Sites were mostly level, a combination of gravel and dirt, with picnic table and fire pit. I would say no big rigs because the sites are pretty small and it's heavily forested, but the guy next door managed to get a 5th wheel in and out somehow. By himself. I have no idea how he did it. Vault toilets. Drinking water. The website said drinking water only, but they did have a hose for filling fresh water tanks. The camphost was friendly and helpful. Cell reception was nonexistent. - AnnP
Jul 2018 - $20.00
The hosts here are great and run a nice clean and organized campground. There is a place to fill water but no dump station. It is in a great location to explore the Aspen area and the surrounding national forest. I would be back again for sure if in the area. - Campingwi

Difficult Campground is a Forest Service campground located a few miles outside of Aspen along Independence Pass. It is well below the 35' vehicle length restriction portion of the pass so long as you approach it from the Aspen side. Don't let your GPS try to route you over the pass when driving to Aspen! The campground is situated in a steep valley filled with aspen trees. Most sites are somewhat sloped and have partial shade. We had to use about 4 lynx levelers to level side to side, but some sites were better about that. The pit toilets were clean and well maintained. The campground host was considerate when he stopped by. Do use the provided bear boxes at each site to store coolers and food. We stayed 2 nights, and would be happy to stay there again. - RobinM

Sep 2014 - $20.00
Dump station additional $7 and must get a key from the Maud Campground host. Peaceful and quiet with only the sound of rustling aspen trees or an occasional jet airplane. Change - now can be reserved online, which we did not do. So we could only pay for one night at a time, which was not a problem when we stayed after Labor Day weekend. Made private by small trees and bushes, the large gravel sites - some are more open to the sun, with beautiful views to the lake. Others sites further up the hill are shaded in the trees. Most sites are not level front to back due to the hillside location of the campground. Nearby fishing access to the Gold Medal Waters of the Frying Pan River (special regulations). No Verizon phone and MiFi connections. We will return. - AluminumCloud
Sep 2013 - $18.00
One of my favorite places. Although the maturing trees have been closing in my view to the lake, I enjoy sitting out in this campsite. The pines are deeply blue green, the aspens rustle in the smallest cool breeze, and the babbling brook meanders down the campsites tucked into the bubbly vista. The road into the White River National Forest is gravel and continues into the campgrounds and campsites. Little Maud campground is close to the Reudi Reservoir and many boaters camp there. Mollie B campground is the next campground and has access to the lake. Just down from the campgrounds gold medal trout waters flow and are fed from the bottom of the lake. We will return. - AluminumCloud
Jun 2013 - $18.00
Little Mattie is one of 3 campgrounds on the western end of the Reudi Reservoir along the Frying Pan River. There are no hookups at these campsites.Water is available at Mollie B campsite. This is dry camping at its best; sites are nestled in the aspen groves at the base of rock outcroppings and well worth the drive around the bend beyond the other two campgrounds. Vault toilets are the only amenity and well kept and cleaned. Space between each site provides privacy and our favorite was site 16. Big rigs could not fit in here. You can run your generator for power. Drawback to this campground is that it is run by a company in California, not the Forest Service. There is an extra $7 fee to use the dump station and the camp host has to be there to unlock it. Overall, a wonderful place to camp while enjoying the fantastic fishing on the Pan River and the charming town of Basalt. - The Grizz

Jul 2016 - $11.00
We had been up here camping a year before but stayed at the Little Mollie. I loved BOTH campground for their beauty and this beautiful lake. My husband loves to fish the Frying Pan, and I have a kayak I like to take on the lake, so it works out great.
Our first nights site was not very nice, no good place for our friends tent, no shade, but it still was pretty and we made it work. However, having let the host know that we didn't have a reservation for the second night, he showed up while we were eating breakfast and said we could stay if we moved up the road 3 sites.. This one turned out to be a gorgeous site, and we had a fantastic stay. - Phyllis Swenson
Jul 2010 - $18.00
This is one of 3 parks at Ruedi Reservoir which is on the Fryingpan River about 15 miles from Basalt. It is close to the boat launch area and loaded with kids on summer weekends. There are a few water spouts in the camp, but the only hose comparable source is at the dump station. The use of the dump station requires an extra fee of $6 and it is quite difficult to access due to sharp turns and poor paving. - bugsy

Gorgeous setting along the river. Lots of trees. Pit toilets impeccably clean. No hookups. - Givmeabr8k

Secluded park 30 miles from nearest "big" town - Basalt. On a reservoir which can be fished and other non-motor powered activities (paddle-boarding, canoe, etc - bring your own gear.) Very clean. Primitive campsites, RV sites and group site all available. Can reserve online. A favorite summer spot for our family. - TraceN

Aug 2016 - $45.00
I ended up here for 2 nights because of a screwed up reservation at another campground. Very expensive campground with little to offer. Road noise is present most of the time. Wifi was okay but dropped quite a few times. My Verizon signal was poor. The electricity voltage was low: dropped as low as 107 but never got higher then 112.
Over the air TV stations came in fine during the day but half dropped out at night. (They no longer have cable.) There are mostly permanents and seasonal campers here. Maintenance appears to be nonexistent as there was leaves from last year blowing around ,as well as twigs and small branches from the trees. - jnateg
Aug 2016 - $45.00
Initially it was difficult to "see" beyond the MANY awful permanent resident RVs that were visibly in VERY poor condition and VERY run down - initially it was very uncomfortable. Have never before seen a park that allows permanent residents' RVs to be such eye-sores, however, if you can get beyond the initial shock, which we eventually did, the water, sewer, and electrical were a-ok as was the location for exploring the Aspen area. - God Bless America
Jun 2016 - $4.00
We could not have been more disappointed. Out campsite was small, not shaded, on dirt with very little grass, no ability to make a fire, the wifi was minimal or didn't work at all, and it was a distance still from Aspen (to have Aspen in the title is very misleading). Would never stay there again. - Tom Armelino

The site is beautiful. We would have enjoyed camping here; however, the camp host was a miserable man. He was very rude and clearly had no use for family pets. Will not return to this campground. In fact, we cut our trip short. - Gary Reed

Jun 2018 - $41.00
Forest service campground with water and electric. Location close to Carbondale. Spacious sites with privacy. Some bush branches lightly scrapped RV but it is a forest service campground. Was able to back in 39 foot 5th wheel without problems as there were no trees to contend with. Nice site. - Beggco
Jul 2016 - $25.00
My wife and I drove to the campground, took one look at site #23, and went to a hotel. It is basically a vacant gravel lot, with zero privacy, right on the road. The website does a poor job of telling you that #23 is shared with #24 with no separation. Just a terrible spot, a complete ripoff. - Rick Smith
Jul 2016 - $23.00
The $9.00 ReserveAmerica reservation fee boosted the senior rate from a reasonable $14 to a margin $23 for our one-night stay at a no hook-up site. Still, the beauty of the Crystal River Canyon makes it worthwhile. This a special area. The camp host was very friendly and helpful. Our site was large (actually a double site 34/35) and mostly level. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return and stay longer. - Desert Beacon

Aug 2013 - $18.00
Even in 45 degree rainy weather, this is a beautiful place. Small, scenic, and quiet. Odd, though, that we never met the camp host or "checked in" or anything remotely official, but we paid our honor system $6 for firewood, claimed our reserved site (while our friends claimed and paid for an empty site that did not have a reservation sign on it). We even had 1 bar of AT&T service, which was a surprise. We wished there had been better signage for trails, but given the steady rain, I guess it all worked out.... Sure wish that the reservation fee wasn't 50% of the nightly camping fee--that is such a ripoff ($18 site, $9 reservation fee). - JCLC
Jul 2013 - $9.00
For anyone planning to use any of the Turquoise Recreational Area Camp sites: The water pipes froze this winter. Both Molly Brown and Printer Boy dumps are closed. There is no place to fill fresh water tanks. So fill up before you arrive. May Queen has working fresh water but you can not hitch a hose to them. There is no running water in any of the other campgrounds. Even given the fact we had to fill our tank from gallon jugs, this is still a great forest service campground. Beautiful views, good hiking and fishing and friendly, helpful host. We go here every year. - NT2013
Jun 2012 - $9.00
This wonderful NFS campground was a great place to escape the heatwave. There are multiple campgrounds in this recreational area but May Queen is the newest and the most RV friendly. There are no hook ups. Water is available at the Molly Brown dump station. There is a second dump station at Printer Boy but it was closed. The sites are large. We set up our screen room to keep the biting flies at bay. All the campgrounds in this Rec Area are popular. Reservations are recommended. Hiking and fishing are the main activities. The only campground in the area that can handle large RVs is Tabor. - NT2013

Sep 2018 - $42.00
Beautiful campground located at the base of the largest mountain (Sopris) in the area and with the Crystal River running behind it. The new bathhouse is one of the nicest we've seen and the back-in patio sites are really a bargain @ $42 a night with VKR discount. - cfmelville

It is park wonderful setting. Been there before and would stay again. - AZSwede
Jul 2018 - $50.00
The sites were acceptably level. The concrete patios and patio tables/chairs were a nice touch, especially in the West. I wish more campgrounds had them. Plenty of shade along the river. Would recommend to anyone. - OhioBill
