Small campground about 15 minutes from historic Durango. Not designed for big rigs. If you're over 40 feet I would stay elsewhere. Sites were small and close. Ladies at the desk were very nice. Has a pool, closed dog park. No wifi at the sites. Pool looked nice didn't use it. Would stay here again but I would ask for a different site. No room for our tow vehicle and we're only 26 feet. Great place for kids. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Durango is one of my favorite places to visit! Shopping and eating, have a drink or meal at the Statler Hotel and of course take the train to Silverton

A mile off the highway off a little used road. Lightner Creek runs through the park. Lots of shade and quiet. No cable or OTA. Wi-Fi only near the office hotspot. While restrooms are clean there is more mold and peeling paint than I care for. Spaces are tight. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Rate reflects pull thru site w/full hookups and $10 for 2 extra people (2 grandchildren). Steep, paved entryway that you have to stop on in order to register. Really long rigs may have challenges getting into some sites so be truthful when you let them know your length. Friendly, helpful staff (mostly family, I think). Sites are basically level; creekside ones are pretty nice. Water pressure ok; electric steady, dump flush with ground and on the driver side rear corner so very easy for us. Lots of shade everywhere. Pool kept immaculately clean as was children playground, pet area and laundry. Cabins scattered about, one or two really tucked away. Laundry a little pricey and machines are residential size so it may be worth your while to go into town for that. If you're traveling with children, this is a very good place to base camp. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Close enough to Durango to do just about anything as if you were actually staying there. Zip line place just down the canyon was a lot of fun for the children and they have a roof patio where you can with them from.

Excellent staff. Clean. Phone reception poor because it is in a canyon near a stream. I had items shipped to me there with no problem. Informative. Close to Durango and easy drive to Silverton and Mesa Verda. Could use trimming of a few branches. Sewer connections are way to the back of the site. We purchased extra at the WalMart. Get them to escort you to your site. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Very steep entrance to the park off a quiet country road. Sites are gravel and asphalt, but the roads can get quite muddy when it rains. The utilities were convenient, although we had to disconnect the water hose a few times as the temperatures dropped to near freezing overnight! There is a lovely creek flowing through the park, and the surrounding trees and mountains provide for a very relaxed setting. The staff were friendly and helpful. WiFi is available at the office hotspot. Overall, this is a great place to stay when visiting Durango, close to the town, but nice and quiet. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Very nice. We pulled in to a creek side site, plenty of room, easy to level. Only ding is it is very steep coming off the highway, forcing you to lock your brakes and transmission, or remain in the seat while your spouse goes in to check in. They have no other space to arrive. Exit was the same way in, but no problem. Except for this, the owners were most helpful and friendly, and offered plenty of ideas and suggestions. Aside from entry and exit, a very well run, quiet, and comfortable campground. Despite the entry, we would definitely stay here again if we get back to Durango. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Small but very pretty campground. Not far from main hwy and downtown. Staff friendly and helpful. Asked for two spaces together but didn't get it. They had to move our friends but still not next to each other. You can't pick spaces ahead of time. This would have helped. Spaces were small but shaded and nice. Restrooms were clean. We would stay there again. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Tent Trailer.

Big rig friendly with level sites. Campground is up a steep road and would be difficult to maneuver in bad weather. Dog park and restrooms was good and no problem with our satellite. If you like isolation (not us), this is the campground for you. Our site was in the back of the campground with a dried up creek behind of us. It is 10 miles to Walmart, downtown, and shopping. There is no Verizon service anywhere at the campground. The only internet is at the office. The laundry room was closed for the season. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We picked this campground, because we were looking for shade and closer to Durango than the place we stayed in Bayfield. We are ecstatic that we found this place! The new owner, as of December 2107, takes great pride in her campground. She is working hard to make improvements, but change does not happen overnight. We got a gravel pull thru site for 4 nights. The bath house is excellent and well maintained. The roads are easy to negotiate. We had several local stations with antenna, and although we were warned that the box canyon would affect our cell and internet, we got Verizon coverage ok. They do offer free wi-fi, by the office. The campground is about 5 minutes from downtown Durango and we went there everyday, Can't wait to see what has improved, by the next time we visit! They believe in their rules and review them with you on check-in. I am okay with that, as long as rules are for everyone and they were! We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: August, 2018 - $48.00
Overall Rating:

Lightner Creek Campground is a serene, wooded paradise near the end of a county road five miles west of thriving Durango, Colorado. It is lovely and carefully maintained and offers some paved sites with small grassy separations and other sites that are gravel. Almost every site has trees or backs up to the creek. This is a full service resort with pool (cool but usable), play area for kids, laundry, showers and more. We loved it and will be back. But even paradise can sometimes stand improvement. The drive-thru sites are narrow and do not offer any area to step down from a trailer or coach. Instead there is a pavement edge that rolls down two inches to the grass, which turns to mud in the rain. A real hazard for slips and falls. It would take up precious grass space but adding a gravel landing beside the pads would improve safety. The online booking service also has problems adequately describing the dozen or so hillside sites that comprise part of the campground. These sites vary significantly in level or near level space making it hard in some cases to safely unhitch a travel trailer. That also makes it hard to rely on published site length to make a selection that really accepts your rig. Call or email to make sure your rig fits uphill sites. One more area that needs improvement is the trash dumpsters. The two lids are steel and are very heavy to lift, especially for seniors. There is obvious need for bear proofing garbage dumpsters. Still, some accommodation needs to be considered. These are somewhat minor inconveniences compared to the overwhelming beauty of the place and the friendly family owners who work tirelessly to provide a high quality camping experience. As said above, we will be back! We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Camping sights are gravel and are very close together with some shade. Very few camp sites have 50 amp electrical service so the park can only accommodate few big rigs. As the park is in a canyon, there is very little noise from the roadway. It also makes for very poor cell service (Verizon), internet, satilite and OTA television reception. The camp "hot spot" is next to the office, but doen't expect much better capability. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

This park is nestled in the trees, there is a creek running through the park, we felt wonderful the second we pulled in! The staff is so sweet and helpful! It was the perfect location, four miles from Durango activity and only 30 miles from Mesa Verde! We had a site by the creek with a deck, furniture and a propane grill! It is a mile and a half off the road, so very quiet. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

My brother camped here in his pop-up in the early 90's and let me borrow it and I stayed here in 1994. The location is great...close to Durango and Mesa Verde N.P. There is a creek running through the park (pretty fast water) and plenty of trees. Being an older campground, it doesn't have the new facilities, concrete pads, etc. some might expect...it's more of a good, old fashioned campground. No fires allowed due to being in a valley. The site we stayed in was relatively level and had a picnic table. We chose a pull-thru site, which we were escorted to, because we didn't want to un-hook our toad. The sites are fairly close together, but it didn't pose a problem. We didn't have kids, but if you do, this is a great spot as there were plenty of them running around, riding bikes, playing, etc. This is definitely a family friendly place. We had our 2 dogs, but didn't take advantage of the fenced in dog area since there was a big, friendly dog inside and we have a puppy who we didn't want to get mowed over. The bathrooms were clean, but we didn't use the showers, so can't remark on those. The staff was quite friendly. It was kinda loud at night...from all the people having so much fun, but it wasn't a bother and quieted down by bedtime. Zero road noise. We walked around the park and there are some great tent sites along the water...and cabins, which seemed to be rented. Seemed to be some family groups vacationing together. We had trees, but our satellite found south. Some of the sites have more trees. We didn't use wifi so can't report on it. We had a 30 amp, full hookup site. They had some raised fire pit things that some folks had access to (via rental or their site), namely for S'mores...our neighbor had wanted one, but none were available. If that sounds like something you'd want, you might want to ask ahead of time to ensure you get one. Lightner Creek Campground was quite full, but not completely booked. We reserved our spot that morning. We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Motorhome.

Just spent 5 nights at Lightner Creek in one of their water/electric sites. This was our second stay in 2 years. Just as last year, our overall experience was great! Friendly folks, clean restrooms/showers/laundry and the grounds were well kept. On the downside, internet and cell phone reception was very poor. Even the wifi hotspot at the office was barely usable. Note to allergy sufferers - the numerous cottonwood trees in the park were in full bloom, showering the park with pollen. This year's stay was in mid June. Last year we visited in mid July - no pollen issues then. Have fun! We camped at Lightner Creek Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The park is less than 5 miles to downtown - good location. We checked out all the other parks in Durango and Lightner Creek beats them all in our opinion. Although the sites are gravel, the roads in the park are paved, so dust was never an issue.
