Overall Rating:

This CG is located down a paved side road across from the NP visitors center immediately before the NP entrance station, and is convenient to the town of Grand Lake. We were here many years ago, before the beetles killed most of the trees. Then, this was a very shaded campground, but now it is very much open and sunny. There are many saplings and in time the trees will return. If your interest goes to horses, this is the place! There is a large corral with a rental operation. The outer loop of sites includes individual horse corrals and many bring their own horses. We have only once noticed a faint hint of barnyard odor in 3 days. The staff was very welcoming. The Wi-Fi may work closer to the office; we could not find any at our site. This is a very kid friendly place with a number of activities for them as well as family activities. The camping price seems high, but there are few alternatives other than dry camping in size restricted sites within the National Park. The laundry/restrooms/showers are very good and well maintained. The sites on the loops are well spaced from each other. There is a section at the back (FHU pull-through sites 119-148) that is more typical of many RV parks with sites arranged in side by side in parallel rows. Tent sites are are clustered in several groups around the park and each is a good size site also. Reservations are probably a good idea for long term sites of if you need a corral. There were a few sites open day to day while we were here so for someone needing a short stay, it would be good to call ahead to be certain of availability. All sites were generally level. Grand Lake is accessible 3 ways. From Estes Park over 11,000' Trail Ridge Road, from I-70 @ Empire via 11,000' Berthoud Pass, from I-70 at Silverthorne via Kremmling (no hard pulls this way). We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Conveniently located at the southwest corner of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Full hookups in the back where we stayed 2 weeks. During the dry days they water down the gravel road to keep the dust down. We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Grand Lake is close by. As is the RMNP. Lake tours are available daily in town. Wildlife viewing was probably best from the RV Park. Elk and moose made daily appearances at our motor home while staying at the Winding River RV Park. Horse boarding is also available at the RV Park. Or you can rent one while there. ATV rental is also available.

With Rocky Mountain NP in your front yard, and the Arapaho NF in your backyard, how can you go wrong? Well managed and family oriented. Beautiful rustic park with a lot to enjoy. Sites vary from full hook-up to no utilities. Neighbors can be close or along way away. Many sites have corrals so you can bring your own four-legged transportation. Don't have your own? No problem. WRR offers several trail rides daily for all ages. I hadn't been on the back of a horse for over 50-years and had a blast. Roads are gravel and sites are mostly level gravel and dirt. Five minutes to RMNP North entrance and 10 minutes to historic Grand Lake. Small store on site with essentials. Good Verizon service, both phone and data. Didn't need to use Wi-Fi. Enjoyed our stay! We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

RMNP is a must see and Estes Park is about an hour and a half away. Historic Grand Lake has a lot to enjoy. Sage Brush BBQ & Grill offers a fair tap list and good food. There is a shelled peanut bucket on every table. Shells go on the floor. That's right, on the floor!

We stayed six nights 9/8-9/13 and loved our stay. The park is HUGE and we liked being in the back FHU section. We enjoyed walking over and feeding the horses carrots. There is an absolutely adorable pony & donkey that ambles through the whole CG. Both are available to pet & visit with children. Views from all directions are spectacular and the starry sky has to be seen to be believed. Camp site was great and much more spacing between units than I was expecting. They monitor the speed limit of 10 mph quite closely. I was caught exceeding it and got a friendly reminder. We are from KS so Colorado is a frequent go to for us. Estes used to be our go to but I think we now prefer the slower pace of the Grand Lake area. Almost forgot, we booked a full day of ATVing at On The Trail and a horse back tour (2 hr) through Winding River while we were there. Highly recommend both. We will definitely return to Winding River again! We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Motorhome.

We really like this park. The staff is very friendly and helpful. This park is a great location for visiting the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake and Granby CO. Our site was long, wide and basically level with a picnic table and fire ring but need gravel to eliminate the mud. The driveways are wide, fairly smooth and easy to navigate. The laundry room is clean and neat with well maintained machines. The restrooms were spotless. The WiFi was spotty. We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Motorhome.

This is a gem of an RV park located in an area where there are not many camping options. The location is ideal for exploring the national park as well as Grand Lake and Granby. As a previous reviewer noted, there are 3 sections to the campground. We were in a water/electric site and we were so glad we were. There are full hook up sites available, but the sites are much closer together than the water/electric sites. Talk to the reservation agent about what you are looking for and they will guide you in your site selection. The views from our campsite were phenomenal! The restrooms and laundry areas are incredibly clean and the staff is very responsive to requests and concerns. WiFi was available at our campsite and we had a strong signal due to our location. If you want a gorgeous CO mountain setting, this is the place for you. We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is a ranch setting with horseback riding, fishing, hayrides and great opportunity to view wildlife. Roads and sites are rough and all dirt, but easy to navigate. There was no sewer but had a dump station. They are in the process of adding sewer. Some sites in the back of the park had sewer. WiFi was weak and we could only connect intermittently at the laundry We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Motorhome.

This park is right at the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park and visitor center, 4 miles from Grand Lake town (a lovely community) and then the lakes.....were breathtaking! We would stay at this RV park again in a heartbeat! We had a moose walk right down the side of our RV!! So quite and peaceful you could hear a pin drop! Some sites in this park cater to folks with horses in that they provide gated corrals for their horses next to their RV sites! We loved watching the horses!

Outstanding resort! Located just outside the west entrance to RMNP, this location provides beautiful vistas, fun days, and quiet nights. Staff were extremely helpful at all times and constantly work to maintain the park's pristine condition. As mentioned earlier, there are 3 distinct sections to the park. Up "front", there are more secluded sites that are laid out similar to a county park. These sites vary from FHU, partial hook-up and primitive. In the center, there are equestrian sites with horse corrals. These are partial hook-up, but staff indicated they are looking at the possibility of adding sewer as well. In the "back" are the sites described in a prior review as "KOA" style. Well, I've never been to a KOA that had views like this one! All these sites are FHU and offer great views in every direction. The horses in the corrals at back are friendly and fun to watch. Nights are quiet in back as well. Overall, there are sites to fit everyone's needs and wants. All access roads are easy to navigate, even with the largest of rigs. Horseback and ATV riding are available on site as well. The resort also offers hayrides, an ice cream social, and full pancake breakfast once a week....all for reasonable prices. We will definitely be back and have already made reservations for next year. Grand Lake is a fun town with various shopping and dining opportunities. There are rentals available for lake activities as well. Gas and food are available in town for reasonable cost. Chain grocery, hardware and auto parts are available a bit further down the road (20 mins) in Granby.

Rate is a weekly rate. This is really two RV parks in one. In the back it looks like a KOA with all the RVs lined up and side by side. We chose for more privacy and took one of the sites toward the office which are really secluded from one another. Ours will surrounded with Aspens and willows. Beautiful. Recommend sites 13 or 15 or another FHU site up front. Got to maneuver to get a sat signal. Water and sewer good. Electric dropped to 114 to 117 volts per leg when more RVs were plugged in, so electric can be iffy and you need to have a surge protector. Beautiful area surrounded by trees and mountains. Entry is really on the county road across from the visitors center and the 1.5 miles down the paved county road. All interior roads dirt/gravel and sites the same. Could be dusty in the summer. This is family oriented with ATV rentals, horse rentals, ball sports, etc., but the National Parks is right across a meadow. Saw deer and elk in the campground (could hear elk bugling all night). ! Staff helpful. This is the wild side of the National Park with lots of hiking. We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Eat at the historic Grand Lake Lodge near entrance of the park. Bring your groceries since there are only two and expensive small markets in Grand Lake. Go out on all the hikes. You can do alone and without a ranger - recommend a hiking stick and a camera (and bear spray just in case). If you want a cultured time, go to the east side of the park, but if you want to experience the wild nature of the national park, come here.

Winding River is a unique western-style resort. It's set on a property adjacent to the western edge of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) just north of Grand Lake. Horseback, ATV, and snowmobile riding are all available. The park is large and has a good variety of site types. We had a full hookup, pull through, which was large and fairly level. For horse lovers with trailers, there are sites which have corrals. The staff was very friendly and helpful. You'll see amazing scenery from almost any site in the park. And the stars at night!!!!! We arrived on a Thursday and check-in was prompt and courteous. We were provided a map and activity sheet for the resort. We were directed to site #41, which was large and surrounded by "mountain" shrubbery/trees on two sides of us.

PROS: Roads were easy to navigate (We have a 40' home with a Ram 1500 toad). Site #41 was large and offered two sides of privacy from neighbors. The lot was dirt but level. Electric and water was easily accessible. Lots of activities for couples and families include: horseback riding, ATV tours, animal farm, ice cream social, petting farm, playground, basketball court, horseshoe pits, and chuckwagon breakfasts/dinners. Personnel were very courteous and a pleasure to speak with during our stay. Location, location, location. This park sits within one-quarter mile of the entrance to RMNP.

CONS: Electricity voltage. On day one, temps dropped into the low 40's and our surge protector kept tripping for low voltage with our heat pump turned on. We received a quick response from personnel who responded and said they were aware of the problem on that circuit. No remedy was offered and we were told the park was booked for the weekend and no alternative site was available to us. On day three, the temps dropped into the 30's and without a heat pump or other alternative heating source, we called the office again. This time we were offered a different site but since we only had one additional night left, we opted to cut our vacation short and head home, which they refunded one night to us. Overall, we really liked the resort and the amenities. If it wasn't for the electrical issue, we would have given it a 9. We intend to return once the electrical issues are addressed. We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Motorhome.

Amazing, simply amazing. The resort is fantastic all around. Spots were large enough for everything. The view was simply amazing, first time this east coaster ever got to see the milky way at night. We were setup across from the ATV rentals and thought it might be a noise issue but it didn't bother us at all. We had moose cruising through camp daily to include a momma and her baby. We did the horseback riding too. We took the 2 hour trip with and had a fantastic time! Guide was amazing too, tons of great stories! Can't recommend this place enough! The Colorado river is right across from the entrance of the park has a nice trail and we fly fished almost every day and caught a ton of little brook trout. Rocky Mountain National Park is really close by. Don't miss Trail Ridge road and Old Fall River road on the way back. Don't be shy about taking Fall River road; we saw a mini van make it through, so your vehicle can too!! East Inlet Trail in Grand Lake is one of the nicest trails I've ever been on.

We stayed in the open area which was full hook up but there are many sites with trees that are partial hookup if you are ok with that. Many activities are offered in the park. We enjoyed the ice cream social, pancake breakfast & Cowboy Church. There is ATV rental on site & trails through the forest adjacent to the park. They allow you to bring your own wood. This campground has some really wonderful parts. The area for big rigs is at the back, and has little in the way of trees. However, we had a campsite in the front, near cabins and surrounded by trees. It was wonderful. We had electricity and water - no sewer. But I'm fine with that sacrifice if it means I get privacy and shade. We had both. The water tasted good, the electricity was stable and the service was relaxed and friendly. My 6 yo daughter loved all the animals. She took a pony ride. It was terrific. There's no pool or playground, but the Colorado River is along the campground boundary so on a hot day you could do some wading. We had moderate temps and even some rain. The southwestern entry gate to Rocky Mountain National Park is 1/4 mile away. It's a better side of the park. More green, fewer people. And, the nearby town of Grand Lake is small, charming and fun. I would happily stay here again. We camped at Winding River RV Resort in a Travel Trailer.
