Electric only site with plenty of water spigots that you can attach a hose to scattered about. Very nice 4 lane Dump Station. Poor cell service, but satellite dish worked fine. Site backed up to lake. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stayed three nights in a 40-foot fifth-wheel. This is a beautiful park with spacious sites and convenient access to the reservoir. An 8 is about the best I can do for a campground with no water or sewer hookups. However, please note that they have a very convenient four-lane dump station but no potable water there. The potable water is on dedicated fixtures in the Hasty Lake campground. The Point campground has no hookups and vault toilets only. The views are fantastic and the road to get there is a long gravel road via the boat launch area. The Lake Hasty campground really has two sections. Sites 1-29 are on their own loop and in full sun. Site 9 is the only site with any shade. The rest of the sites in the Lake Hasty campground are in a Cottonwood grove. The sites on the water are mostly fantastic. If you like some shade, site 38 is amazing. Site 30 is also great but while we were there this was a camp host site. The rest of the sites except those closest to the campground entrance road have mature cottonwoods for shade. Remember that I said cottonwood...as in lots of seed pods floating around in June. Lots of locals and many have boats for fun and fishing. We don't fish but, from what we saw, they were actually catching and keeping. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: March, 2019 - $24.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed at John Martin for three nights in March, which is still pretty stark in southern Colorado. The main draw of this campground is the fishing, which is supposed to be excellent. The campground was nearly empty while we were there, maybe half a dozen other campers. The bathhouse had the handicapped room open, which was a complete bathroom with toilet and shower combined. The other sections were closed, understandable with the low complement of campers. The laundry room was open, and the building was very clean all around. Not much to do here, there's only one trail that winds around the campground and leads up past the visitor center to a site that marks a section of the old Santa Fe Trail. Dump station was easy to access. It was very quiet here, and we saw wild turkeys and some deer. The visitor center said someone had seen a bobcat near there earlier in the week. It's probably really nice later in the season after the trees and greened up, there a a lot of deciduous trees along with the evergreens. Fairly spacious sites, we had a pull-thru close to the entry road, other sites among the trees were closer together. Most of the sites in the outer, more open spots had a wind/sun shelter over the picnic table. Our rate reflects ONLY the camping fee, as we buy the annual pass to take care of entry fees. We would stay here again if we were passing through, but that's unlikely. It was on our way from Denver to Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, and made sense on this leg. Not much in Hasty except a post office and a small store - looked more like a convenience store than a grocery, closest town is Lamar - 20 miles away. La Junta is 30 miles the other direction, and Old Bent's Fort NHS is near there. We didn't get a chance to see that, but hear it's well-staffed and has people dressed in period costume. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

You're coming here for the lake or just passing thru. The lake and reservoir are nice with swimming, fishing, boating plus hiking paths and wildlife/bird watching. Roads are paved nicely with no obstructions. Sites are level gravel with a fire ring and concrete pad under the shaded picnic table. Sites have only electric and they do not do recycle. Cost us $31 for Friday night (including the entrance fee). We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

These rare some of the largest campsites I have ever seen. They are extremely clean and widely spaced. They are electric only but there are plenty of water spigots for filling. There are heavily shaded areas with limbs well trimmed and open sunny sites. Each site has table with cabana and firepit. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There is no water at the sites. Instead one must find one of the spigots placed around the park; not what I expected given the price. The Lake-side sites are nice and the lake is very peaceful (in March). We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We camped in the Lake Hasty campground. This is a pretty good state park campground, with huge sites. You won't have to worry about hearing your neighbors snore. In the loop where we stayed, you could mark off a football field in the open space in the center of the loop behind the campsites. We had plenty of room for our 41' motorhome in our back in site, with room to park our towed car (and another, if we had visitors) in front. The pad and patio is packed small gravel, and almost as hard as concrete. The site was quite level, and the grassy area around our campsite seems like we were on about a 1/4 acre lot between our next door neighbors on each side. There is no water hookup at the sites, but there are a few community spigots scattered on each loop. There is one dump station that serves the whole park, but it does have 4 lanes. We did have an issue with ants. We had an active bed in the middle of the patio when we arrived. We used some creature deterrent, and they weren't much of a problem the rest of our stay. We had weak signal for our Verizon MiFi, and no signal for our AT&T network phones. At times, we could walk a little way from our site to get a phone signal. The park is below the dam, which dampens the signals from the carriers. We had no problem with satellite dish reception for the TV, but there are zero over the air TV channels available. There is a small convenience store with a deli 2 miles away from the park, but if you need restaurants, groceries or WalMart items, the nearest town is Lamar, which is about 20 miles away. It's a town of about 36,000, so it has your basic needs. There is no one at the check in station. If you don't have a reservation, there is a self service slot to register and pay. Rangers patrol regularly, and they check your vehicle passes. You also need a state park pass in addition to the camping fee. We have an annual pass, but had to go to the visitor center to get a pass for our towed car. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Lamar is 20 miles away to the east for shopping and dining. There is a truck stop/travel center on the west side of Lamar. To the west 30 miles away is La Junta, about the same size as Lamar, with similar shopping and dining opportunities. It does have a very good Chinese restaurant, the Bamboo Panda, not a buffet.

We knew that camping in SE CO in June was going to be a gamble. The first three days were 102 degrees plus and little breeze. Thankfully a cold front came through to cool things off and the weather was really nice our last three days. That said: we booked 7 nights but left a day early because we had already gone through THREE cans of bug spray and I was absolutely over trying to fight the mosquitos and deer flies any longer.

The campsites are well spaced out for the most part and were mostly level. There was a dead tree at the back of our parking area. Even with the dead tree 3" from the back of our rig, we had to stretch our power cable to the max to reach the pedestal. Overall a clean park with very friendly staff who work hard to keep up with the park's needs.

Definitely bring everything you will need and don't get low on fuel as the nearest town is 20 miles away in Lamar. Also, prepare for cell service to absolutely suck.

We MAY stay here again but would only go between October and April. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here for 5 nites. Sites were electricity only(50 amp) & very ample in length for our 40'MH & tow. The sites were spaced away from each other for good privacy. Each site had a small shelter over the picnic tables providing shade & wind break . It was very windy at times. We were at the bottom side of the dam, but Lake Hasty was walking distance to fish or swim on the small beach. There was a convience store for bread, milk etc in Hasty a few miles away, but not for major groceries. We probably wouldn't stay again. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

This campground was a pleasant surprise. It is way out in east Colorado and you hardly see a tree in sight then when in the park you loop down below the dam and there is a nice tree-filled campground. Spots roomy, lots of birds. Will definitely go back. Note that the water is not so good so bring your own drinking water and lots of bug spray if you are there in the warmer weather. I arrived late afternoon on Friday before Memorial Day and found no one to check me in at the Hasty Campground booth. I had wanted to buy an annual pass, but no one to sell me one, so I camped illegally. I would have thought someone would be there on this big weekend. Campsites were large and reasonably level, and there was a laundry room nearby with three working washers and dryers, which was nice. A big disappointment, however, was that this campground was behind the huge dam so there was absolutely no Verizon phone or data cell service. Also, no view of the big lake or much of anything else. Also, to get into my loop, you had to wait behind people who were filling up water tanks since this is electric only. This is a very bad placement of a water spigot as the road is too narrow to get by and the trees scraped my rig to get close to water. Also, this is the kind of faucet where you have to hold lever down while you are sticking hose in tank, which is tricky when you are alone! They need to trim trees and put water fills in a different place. Nice dump station, however. Paying $24 for the site plus a $10 reservation fee and a $7 use fee makes this a very expensive state park for one night. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Motorhome.

As I age (apparently not so gracefully) driving the PU while towing a 5th wheel is stressful and it's good to be able to relax for a few days and unwind. This Colorado state park was a good place for me to de-stress. I stayed for four nights in the middle of September and the after Labor Day crowd wasn't here. The park was only about ½ full on Saturday and by early Sunday afternoon there were only about a dozen rigs left. Individual sites are well spaced from each other and you're not in your neighbor's pocket. You can choose a well shaded site or one in full sun. There is 50A electric at each site with community water spigots spaced throughout the entire park. A large tank dump facility is convenient on the way out. Value is a difficult concept and varies per individual preferences. For me, the $28 daily park fee PLUS the $7 daily car fee adds up to too much cost for too little value, despite the tranquility of the park. Were the two fees a total of about $25 a day, then the value might be more in line with what's offered. Even with that criticism, it's not a bad spot for a day or two. Poor AT&T cell service in the park. I had to drive to the visitor center for 5-bar 3G service. Lots of wildlife - deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel and various birds including an amazing sight of hundreds of Turkey Vultures soaring back and forth on the updraft created by face of the dam that faced toward an easterly breeze. Standing on top of the dam I watched for 20 minutes as the birds seemingly enjoyed their flights back and forth. Would I stay again? Meh, probably if I were traveling the same roads, but I would not go out of my way to come back. We camped at John Martin Reservoir State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

A strong recommendation is to visit Bent's Fort, a national parks historic site about 25 miles to the west, near La Junta. The fort has been reconstructed on the exact site of the 1830's original to the plans from that time. It is like stepping back 185 years to a era when only true adventurers traveled the Santa Fe trail. Well worth the 2-3 hours it will take to absorb all that's offered there.
