Wonderful campground if you are seeking peace and quiet and a gorgeous setting. The campground has no sewer or water hookups (though there is one water spigot where you can fill cans) and no showers, but there is electrical. The sites -- especially on the outside of the ring -- are very spacious and really picturesque. There's lots of good mountain biking, gravel biking, and hiking in the area, as well as moose and other wildlife. Be sure to check out the short hike to Lake Agnes, in particular. We got no cell reception in the campground, but there's a gravel pit about 12 miles up the road (toward Walden), where a good Verizon signal comes in. This is my new favorite place to "get away from it all." We camped at State Forest State Park - Ranger Lakes Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

The campground sites at Ranger Lakes are equipped with 20-50 amp electricity. There are no showers or water fill at the camp site. There is a single water outlet for filling 5 gal containers. The fill and dump station is about 5 miles away at the park maintenance building. The camp sites are in clearing of downed trees. All standing live trees are 20 years or younger. There is ample space between campers. To access some sites you have go the wrong way on the one way road. Its a short loop so no worries. The camp host will tell you the best way to access. We camped in June, days were mild and nights were cold. We stayed 10 days, freezing temps at night. Vault toilets on site. Campground is often visited by elk, deer and moose. The elevation there is right at 9000 ft. so breathing for me was difficult the first few days. Plan ahead and reserve on line. At the time these were the only sites that offered electricity in the park. ***Note***Camping rate was $23.00 per night. You must also purchase a park pass for $10.00 a day or $70.00 for the year. Good for all Colorado State Parks. We camped at State Forest State Park - Ranger Lakes Campground in a Motorhome.

If you want to get away from it all and you don't feel like towing through the Rocky Mountains, Ranger Lakes is a great option. If you go through Poudre Canyon, it's twisty but relatively flat. The campground is one of the quietest places I've camped with my motor home, filled with respectful people there to enjoy nature instead of listen to loud music while their dogs bark. The view of the valley below the park is gorgeous, and we saw lots of deer and moose from our chairs each day. It stays a little chilly, though there are mosquitoes because the area is fairly lush. There aren't any amenities and it's pretty far from civilization, and sometimes that's the best part of camping. Most of the sites are phenomenal, but the ones on the edges are the best. We stayed here one night on our way back from Yellowstone. Small, remote campground with electric hook-ups and vault toilets. There were moose grazing nearby. Short hike to Ranger Lakes fishing hole in the woods. We arrived late with low water tanks; however, the camp host was nice enough to loan us his personal hose so we could fill up tanks. A good place to stop for 1-2 nights. We camped at State Forest State Park - Ranger Lakes Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Had good pizza at the local pizza place in Walden. Lookout for moose nearby. Some of the area has suffered from beetle-kill problem but the views are still nice.

Pretty campground even with loss of trees. Good fishing especially for kids. Good weather with few showers. Mosquitoes were a nightmare. Would return only if mosquitoes under control! We camped at State Forest State Park - Ranger Lakes Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This is a great setting for a park. The sites are spacious. They are electric only sites and although there is a water hydrant, it isn't very easily accessible. We had some water on board so did not use it. Also, if you want a dump station you have to drive about 6 miles west to another park entrance and up a dirt road about a mile. The park is fairly well kept. It is sad to see all the beetle kill that has taken so many of the trees, but there isn't much that can be done about that. Also didn't care for the fire pits which were so deep, you really couldn't feel the heat from the fire. I'm sure this is to protect from wildfires, but just not very usable. Due to beetle kill, the campground has few trees but lots of nice grasses. Nice trails available. Pit toilets, no showers. Nice lake with good fishing but lots of mosquitoes especially in the evening. Found a nice geocache. To see moose, get up early and take the Gould trail that leads to a meadow. No dump station at this campground; one is located at the North Michigan entrance. Be sure to visit the Moose Center...you can hike to it from the campground. This used to be a favorite but now the trees are all gone and the service is not what it used to be. Evidently, since the Dept. of Wildlife took over the Colo. St. Parks, sevice and upkeep have gone downhill. The only amenity is electricity and firepits. One outhouse and one water faucet is all there is. We found out from a camper that the fish had all died of winterkill and the DOW had not re-stocked it yet. We won't return! As others have mentioned this area has been hit hard by the pine bark beetle. The campground has been clear cut which actually makes for beautiful views of the mountains, as well as super easy to maneuver in and around the campground. The sites are long level back-ins with 50amp and good space between sites. It is right off 14, but there is not a lot of traffic, especially at night. We used this campground as a base for doing several beautiful hikes in the area. We camped at State Forest State Park - Ranger Lakes Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We had purposely made reservations at this state park because of the lakes. They say on their website that the lakes are stocked; no they are not. We kept asking the rangers when they would be stocked, and they just kept saying they weren't sure when they were coming. They also say on their website that they have a dump station. Not true, theirs has a leak so it can't be used. Also the campground had been devastated by the pine beetles. The downed trees were lying everywhere; it was such a mess. Stay away from this state park. We attempted to get our money back from the state; filled out all the paperwork but never heard back. This is a campground just over the Continental Divide, in a fairly remote part of the state. Most of the trees have been removed due to the pine beetle infestation, making the first impression of the campground a bit stark. However, this clearing gives a good chance to observe moose browsing in a bog down the hill behind the campground. There are quite a few recreational opportunities in the surrounding state park, including hiking, 4-wheeling, and geocaching. So this is a park in a area, to get away from the crowds. The campsites are level, and ours had 30 and 50 amp service. There are no showers, and only vault toilets. Potable water is available. The dump station is several miles away and does not have water available to clean-up or to flush tanks. There are hidden costs. There is a $10 fee to reserve over the internet. In addition a $7 fee for daily park use (or $70 for an annual pass) is required. There are special discounts available for Colorado residents, which would reduce the camping fees. We camped at State Forest State Park - Ranger Lakes Campground in a Motorhome.

They have had to remove the majority of trees due to pine beetles. This also improves the view of the marshes, and we saw 3 moose while here. The roads were in bad shape, but the sites were level. There was no host and the bathrooms were not as clean as they could be. Close to many hiking trails and the Moose Visitor Center. This beautiful campground is closing on 9-9-09 so they can remove almost all of the trees since they have been killed by pine beetles! It will be ruined and will be an open bare spot in the forest without shade. The host, does a terrific job keeping the campground spotless. BE WARNED. The dump is closed because of an underground leak so go with empty tanks!! This breaks your heart to see a wonderful campground be ruined! A great State Park Campground. The sites are large and easy to get into. The electric sites have been upgraded to include 30 and 50 amp service! There is a ton to do here, including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, and much more. The forests have been attacked by the Bark Beetles and look bad, but come and enjoy anyway.
