One of the finest USFS CGs you'll ever stay in. The road in is rough -- you'll be doing about 10 mph most of the way. CG was rebuilt in 2001; roads are well laid out and many sites are nearly level. Camp hosts are the best. Very scenic. We camped at Bear Lake Campground, Routt National Forest in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This is at the edge of the Flat Tops Wilderness. Lots of hiking trails going up into the Wilderness. Also a few 4WD trails. Abundant wildflowers in season. Lots of fishing. Bring mosquito repellent, it's a long drive back to town if you forget it.

Fist of all, the town of Yampa is very charming! Rustic and western and small almost like a little village with the neatest grocery market gift shop, a rustic bar and a diner, and a liquor store and gas station. The road behind the grocery store leads you to 3 beautiful reservoirs, views of the flat tops and 82 different places to camp, no reservations needed. (It's all first come anyways) Bear Lake Campground is pretty wooded if you like that, but if you want more water views and views of vistas, there are plenty of spots outside of Bear lake Campground all on the same road (Forest Service Road 900) and they are all spread out. Look at Facebook on "Flat Tops Wilderness Yampa CO" to see tons of photos. Bathrooms did not smell, everything super clean and not crowded, hidden gem here. We camped at Bear Lake Campground, Routt National Forest in a Tent.

Crowded. Horrible mosquitoes. Fishing was not good at all. Though pretty, very difficult place to stay. Long drive from Denver. Many better places to camp closer to Denver. We camped at Bear Lake Campground, Routt National Forest in a Travel Trailer.

This area of the Flat Tops is gorgeous and if you have an RV, Bear Lake Campground is a great place to go. The sites are very wooded and they have a good amount of space in between the sites. It is actually a big loop and easy to drive through, some sites you can't even see anyone around you. There are 2 camp hosts here that are very helpful if you are looking for hiking info or anything at all. One thing I like about this place, is that if it is full, there is also plenty of camping outside of Bear Lake. And, I also like how the area has 3 different reservoirs to fish. (Yamcolo Reservoir, Bear River, and Stillwater Reservoir.) And a trailhead for 3 popular hikes is near here as well. The campground is separate from the lake, however it is only a short walk out of the woods and to the lake. There is no electric hook ups, but there is a bathroom and water. We camped at Bear Lake Campground, Routt National Forest in a Tent.

Without reservations, nice camping spots can be hard to find. We took a chance, following a fly fisherman's advice and traveled the 14 miles of asphalt and gravel roads back into the Bear River area. We chose to stay at the Bear Lake campground, one of three along the Bear River - no reservation needed. Other single sites along the road/river were also open. While not level, the site needed little adjustment. Quiet, quiet, quiet. Trout filled waters flow below the dam. We will return. We camped at Bear Lake Campground, Routt National Forest in a Travel Trailer.

Campground is at 9,700' and twelve miles up a somewhat rough gravel road. It is located in a mixed spruce/fir forest with mostly shaded sites. Great trout fishing at three lakes in the area (Bear Lake is 100 yds. from the campground) as well as numerous hiking trails, including the infamous Devil's Causeway. Sites are wide and level; campground was refurbished in 2002. Water is from a mountain spring and was great. Vault toilets are new and clean. We camped at Bear Lake Campground, Routt National Forest in a Fifth Wheel.
