I booked one night. When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised how well stocked the office was with everything needed to camp including toys for the kids. I was undecided on the site I wanted to stay. I was escorted on a golf cart to sites along the water. The staff member suggested I use sites 61 or 62. Most sites on the river were taken by seasonals. The site was easy to get in and out. There were lots of trees and was very relaxing. The bathrooms and showers were the cleanest I ever camped at. It was so relaxing I stayed a second day and used the pool. It too was the cleanest I every used. The roads were kind of ruff and there is no need for a 5 mile speed limit sign as it would be the fastest you could drive without experience discomfort. This place has it all. Wide open to treed sites. A big pavilion and canoes to rent, fishing, horseshoes. basketball court. The only thing in poor shape was the miniature golf. I can't wait to go again. - niftysixty

We camped here with 2 other families. There were 9 kids from ages 5-10. The good: Sites were big under tall pines in the area that we camped. This gave us great shade. We had W/E/S, and our site was relatively level with only a few roots around the big pine trees. Owners are very nice. Craft time was fun for the kids (free for 1st craft, $1 for the second) and the lady running it was very patient with my detail oriented son who took a long time to finish. Pool was clean, but got crowded. There is mining and panning available for a fee (I thought was reasonable), our kids loved this. Camp store was reasonably priced too. We camped within sight of the pavilion and the older playground. A second playground that the kids loved is closer to the office. This was in good shape. There was a nice level loop that the kids could ride their bikes around that was in sight of our site. There is also canoeing and boat rentals, as well as mini golf and a museum all for a fee, but we didn't do any of those things. The area that we were in had us in contact with only one seasonal trailer, and they were super nice to all of us. The bad: There was a group of tenters right next to the pavilion that had a pitbull. There is no policy on aggressive dogs. Front desk told me that they would keep an eye on it. I just kept a close eye on my kids! I have a dog of my own but would never bring her here because there were dogs everywhere with no restrictions on where they could go as long as they were on leashes. This may be good for some, but not all dogs can handle lots of kids running around nearby: like pit bulls. At the dance pavilion, there is a concession stand. After waiting in line, with no one behind us, we were told by a rude girl, that they were now closed. Bathroom toilets looked clean but had lots of cobwebs and spiders hanging around. (I know, this is camping in the woods, but this freaked my daughter out.) Overall, I liked the campground, but was really concerned about the big dogs around. I would definitely camp here again, but I will wait until after the season is over, and ask about the dogs. - Itsatrip

We stayed here Columbus Day weekend which coincided with their Halloween celebration. This was a blast and virtually each and every site participated. Not much else to do here as far as amenities go, but they do have a nice fishing lake. - McNamara's Band

We were shocked at the condition of this campground. Drove in and right back out. Did use the restroom, and it was clean, but I was over come by the smell of Lestoil cleaner! Play ground was on dirt with no mulch, grass, pea stone, etc. Sites are one on top of the other, and the roads are terrible. I am notifying KOA to go and inspect this campground. You would even have difficulty riding a bicycle. NOT a typical KOA campground. Do not go to this campground! - Mike and Rose
Jul 2011 - $54.00
Our site was adequate. We had huge rocks to drive over, but once we were set up, we had a nice view of the road. We enjoy when they have a burger shack so we can enjoy not cooking occasionally. Unfortunately, the burger/ice cream shack "Bubbas" that they advertise never opened and they told me it's because of the economy. I was disappointed in the condition of the pool. It was also very cold. There is nobody to pick up trash. We had to drive it to the back of the campground which was an extremely rutted road. That was a terrible inconvenience. There were no activities for any children to participate in. There is a nice playground though. - AlracYam
Oct 2010 - $55.00
This was our first trip to this campground. We went with another couple. I had to send multiple emails to get answers to my questions. Two days before arriving, I still had not gotten the information about final prices due to "bring a friend, camp 1/2 price" that was listed on the website, but not verbally told to us on the phone. Upon arriving, my husband and the other husband camping with us had a terrible time getting into the sites. They were far to small for our 35' fifth wheels. If we had not been with the other couple, we would not have been able to use our fire ring, canopy or picnic table. As it was, we used the empty site next to use for the campfire due to the small sites. On Saturday, we went up to the store between 9:30 and 10:00, but it was closed. There wasn't any firewood and we ended up going to another campground to look around and buy wood there. The DJ was to start at 7:00, but it was much later before that happened. Dogs were howling around the clock for 2 1/2 days. I was double charged for one site even though several emails confirmed that both sites would receive the 1/2 price for the weekend. It is not a place that I would recommend if you want activities or have a large camper. - lauriejm

Driving to the campground is a little challenging because of the many low branches.Once in the park we were escorted .5 miles back to our site on one of the worse roads we have ever been on.The site was very large with no sewer, but they do have pumpout service. Ontill they do major repairs on the road we would not return. - Rip

If you are looking for a place to escape the madness of I-95, this is pretty good choice. H U G E campsites. As one camper told me this is "real" camping with some extra benefits. You are in the middle of the woods, with direct access to a good size semi private fishing lake (no campsites on lake). There is crystal clear pond to swim in and a long lane to walk on, and the state park is all around you of you want to explore it. While the wifi is slow, you can get your email. Verizon cell service allowed texting, but calls required a Wilson Booster. The cable is excellent, and the water makes good coffee. While there isn't a sewer connection, you can connect your gray water to a sewer pipe on most of the sites with an old garden hose. There is a place to empty the black tank on the way out. We were here in late June during the week. There are a lot of seasonal campsites set up (mostly newer with nice decks), the owners didn't seem to be present so I am guessing they come up for the week end. We were set up in the far end of the campground in a clearing. But there were other open sites in the trees if we wanted them. We just wanted easy in and out and they gave us this one. Owners live on site and guided us on to site. I would come back again. Definitely should be on your list if looking for seasonal escape. - Tom & Marilyn
Jun 2014 - $10.00
We were traveling through the area and needed an over night stop. Based on the previous reviews, I picked this CG. We arrived after the office closed (5pm) and the door had phone numbers to call. But based on the following we chose not to stay here. 1) Very seasonal, 2) did not look the best in our judgement, 3) had to be 10+ miles off the main road, and 4) no activity that we could find. It could be a nice place to stay, but just not to our liking. - Dennis D

Very laid-back atmosphere, friendly staff and friendly seasonal people, Wish they had wi fi, no cell phone service with t-mobile over there. But there is a pay phone, good store there and not expensive, they keep their prices affordable, - Zztammyzz

May 2017 - $45.00
Nighly rate is $45, but they charged an extra $10 for the Memorial Holiday weekend. This is a older campground with dated facilities. But the electric, water, and sewer were adequate. The campground has two sections, one to the right of the entrance road and the other to the left. The sites to the right are mostly seasonal and permanents. The roads here are real rough with large boulder tops that you drive over. There are also a lot of tree limbs to watch out for. The left side of the campground looked to be the better option. Most of the sites there were in a large field. Sites in both sections were mostly level, call them lumpy. But we had no problem leveling after taking time to position our MH. They have WiFi, but we were unable to connect to it from our site. OTA TV and Verizon cell were both good here. - Bob and Inga
Aug 2016 - $40.00
I chose this campground because I wanted to be able to make easy day trips to both Newport and Providence and this proved to be well situated for that. There are gravel driveways and grassy sites which included a picnic table. The transient sites are in a large open area with mostly pull through sites. We had a 30 amp electric, full hookup site. They offer free WiFi that worked very well for us. There is a cell tower within sight so our AT&T signal was strong, around -77 dBm. There is a pool, although we didn't make use of it. The bathroom was OK, somewhat rustic but generally clean, however, it could use more light. The owners seem to be part time and are absent for hours at a time and may take some time to even return your call. We paid $40 per night. They accept cash or check only. - Coopsecondact

This campground has actually been excellent for the past 6 years. However they are now 50+ and do not want families with small children. So be aware if you are going there that it is great unless you are a family. Retirees only with grandchildren as visitors only. - LKD

It has filthy outdated restrooms. There are no activities for families or children. The playground consists of 2 swings. Water Hook-ups on sites are in a hole in the ground, very unsanitary. The sites are very close together. We would not stay here again. - Fulltimers8

The bathrooms were outdated and smelled. The bathroom was filthy. I would never stay here again. The campground is out in the middle of nowhere. - bonitap62
Jun 2009 - $38.00
If you want peace and quiet, this is the perfect place to be. But to us that was the only reason to stay here. It is rather difficult to get to in our 40 ft. motorhome. The road is narrow with low hanging branches. Our site was very uneven and it was rather hard to level our rig. There was no designated spot for a dog walk, so we were always afraid we were somewhere we shouldn't have been. There was cable at each spot, but it was only available if you were staying for the season - not very accommodating. It was close to Providence, Newport, and Mystic. I don't think we would ever stay here again. - bobnpat

There is some potential here. Unfortunately, a very, VERY rude host (Pete) and extremely dirty restrooms made for a terrible stay. We made the most of it because it was a mini-family reunion and coordinating new reservations for so many people after the first day was not possible. However, we will never be back. My advice to the owners/hosts: Retrain Pete on customer service and clean up the place if you are going to charge people. My advice to future guests: go elsewhere. - RoadFam
Jun 2014 - $25.00
As others have stated, this place has potential, but is not the best. The camp site was fine, but the bath house was terrible. Lot's of bugs, no HOT water in the sink, no mirror, and mostly a seasonal CG. We will not stay here again. - Dennis D
Jun 2009 - $40.00
Ditto to the last review. We were there on the same weekend and being someone who has camped for many years, I had never encountered such rudeness by the owner. It is time to either hand the reigns over or put up the for sale sign. Like the last person, the area was beautiful but the upkeep of the surrounding buildings were horrible. It was apparent that many, and I mean many seasonals had pulled out and the undesirables were what was left behind. All I can say that the retaliation of a simple request to adhere to quite hours turned into vandals opening up our black water valve along with a neighbors. In my opinion, this campground is not worth a second look. - cbdbree

I have to disagree with much of what the previous poster said. We have stayed here in 2017 (twice) and 2018 (two weeks) in our 35' class A. We love Hopeville! Beautiful wooded park with a large pond suitable for kayaking and fishing. Not sure if gas motors are allowed. We kayaked several times. Also biked out from the park and, while those eastern CT back roads offer no painted shoulder, the traffic was minimal and drivers were cautious. But, back to the campground. There are so many large, level sites that are perfect for motorhomes and trailers. They don't allow anything larger than 35', so ours was as large as they allow. Most sites do NOT have any hookups, so you're boondocking. But, this past sprint they installed water and electricity on about a half dozen sites. Our only issue was that they did not grade the sites very well after installing the hookups. We observed the following: B1 and B3 looked nicely leveled, but were pretty open with B3 in particular being right in front of the restroom with the path running along side the site. Not our cup of tea, but others might be ok with it. B5 was a wide site, but there was a low spot right next to the electric hookups which was one big puddle (there was a lot of rain when we were there), which is obviously where others rigs have parked. B7, our site, is very large, but again the only level place to park was right next to the hookups, and again, it was all mud because it's lower than the rest of the site. We had to park on the hill and use our levelers. Our friend in B9 had a heck of a time finding a level place to park her 28' class c because the fire ring was smack in the middle of the only level spot. Despite this, we love the beauty of this park and will return. I've sent our observations to park management, so maybe they'll regrade the sites, or at least keep grade in mind when they add services in the future. Boondock sites = $17, hookup sites = $27. - Bobalou
Jul 2013 - $26.00
This is really a tenting campground. Very wooded and shady. Although most of the sites are large (surprisingly so) and level (I didn't need any levelers), there are lots of trees and many boulders that block access, or at least make it very difficult, to have a travel trailer or camper here. A smaller Class C might do well here. Out of all the sites, realistically only about six or so are suitable for a travel trailer - campground map does not highlight this. No hookups, and water is not easily available to fill freshwater tank. Bathrooms and showers were "state park clean" - a basic cleaning daily and very usable. If you are tenting and want a surprising amount of privacy, Loop F is the place to be. Large tent sites surrounded by heavy woods. Many sites are near the pond swimming area which is set up nicely, the other sites are not too far away (easy walk). Dump site is odd - very narrow, with a speed bump (??) at the end of it. I guess people were speeding through the dump site? This State Park borders Pachaug State Forest, which has tons of hiking trails available - one forest trail actually comes into Hopeville Pond State Park. Important note about hiking Pachaug State Forest - a lot of the hiking trails are very poorly marked, it is easy to get turned around once you get off the dirt roads. Overall, I am not sure how to rate Hopeville Pond. I only gave it a "7", as it is not RV friendly, but it is a very nice state park! - Tom

This campground is by invite only. Owners provide amenities that exceed your wildest expectations. Went for Labor Day Weekend and my family was treated like royalty. No minimum stays required. Arrived Saturday at noon and was instantly greeted with open arms. Guided pontoon boat tours, lake swimming and grassy shoreline. Owners have a bass boat available for tubing, skiing or fishing. Family style meals are encouraged for all meals. Saturday lunch/dinner was burgers, dogs, clams and various salads. Beer, wine and soda provided all weekend long. Sunday breakfast in the main lodge, and dinner consisted of linguini and clam sauce, marinated steak tips, and various side dishes. Bathhouse is a cabin with showers and restrooms. Site was very close and convenient. No sewer hookups but you spend very little time in your unit. Area is shaded and easy to access. Everyone was friendly. Lodge was constructed over the last few years and includes sitting area, kitchen, dining area, more bath areas steam room and jacuzzi, and hot tub. - meatwagon45
