The road was in such bad repair that we never made it to our paid site! Even the road to the gate had such washed out areas that we had to drive at a snails pace and swerve off the road to avoid damage. We scraped the bottom of our car badly when approaching the gate from the road and that should have been enough to convince us to turn around but we unlocked the gate and inched our way onto the drive going to the campground. There was a lump in the middle of the road and where previous tires had driven it was low. For a few yards, we tried to inch our way up with our right tires on the elevated middle of the road and our left tires to the side of the road but when we got to an area that did not look like that would work, I got out and assessed the clearance under our car and it was not going to make it. I did not want to cause thousands of dollars of damage to my car or be stranded at dusk in the middle of nowhere so I backed my way out much to the tears and disappointment of my children. We ended up driving out of our way to Panama City and stayed in a hotel with a view from our window of dumpsters, trash, and the destruction from the hurricane with a price tag of over $200. My youngest son had never gone on a vacation and we were trying to make this happen on an extremely tight budget. This unexpected expense cost him his dolphin experience that we had planned to provide him. The children had hoped to eat seafood from the gulf and had to endure peanut butter sandwiches and oranges every meal instead to compensate for the unplanned hotel expense. I sent a review asking that consideration to be given to either closing this campsite until the roads to it are filled in, plowed and repaired or else additional wording beyond primitive and dirt road be provided to unaware campers making reservations that would convey that it is not suitable for cars that sit low to the ground and that a person needs a four wheel drive high sitting vehicle to reach the site. Don't book a reservation at this campground until they repair the roads leading to it unless you have a four wheel drive or vehicle with a lot of clearance between the under carriage and a road that is washed out and in ill repair. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Tent.

There are 18 sites that are reservable, 2 for walkups. All sites have 30 and 50 amp. Sites 1-7 are not really big rig friendly. We were in 14 and was good except for the tree branches that were hanging over the camper. I didn't even notice them until I put my TV antenna up. Sites 1-14 are around the pond. I feel like 12 and 14 are the best sites. The dump station is set up kind of odd, but we made it work. Interior roads were dirt and narrow. Verizon signal was good. Yellow flies were real bad, but that's to be expected at this time of year. There's really nothing for kids to do unless they like to hike. There were some people swimming in the pond, but I wouldn't do it. It's only about 15 minutes to Panama City Beach where there's plenty to do. All sites have picnic tables(some have 2), grill and a fire pit. Overall we were pleased with the campground and will be back again especially since it's only about 45 minutes from where we live! We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

So . . . we made a last minute decision to head to the Panama Beach area around Spring Break (although we're retired so SB is meaningless to us). Couldn't find any campground, public or commercial anywhere on the beach. Then I found the Sand Pond Campground at Pine Log State Forest. In many states, the State and National Forest campgrounds are pretty basic with no hookups, pit toilets, etc. NOT this one! It beats many State Parks I've been in. The campsites are arranged around a beautiful lake under pine trees. They all have cement pads and full hookups. Only negatives is the navigation - the road is narrow, winds through a fore mentioned pine trees and was OK for even the biggest motor home BUT will make you nervous. The road in is sand but was well graded, wide and in great shape so don't be afraid of it as you turn off the highway. Note that, other than some boring hiking through flat pine tickets there isn't much to do here. BUT, it's only 15 quick minutes from the beach and Panama City. Lets face it, even at most of the beach front state parks the campgrounds are far enough from the beach that you have to ride to the beach. I stumbled across this place but I'd stay here again in a heartbeat to visit the Panhandle beaches. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Sites we have stayed in: #12 - This is a pull-through located on the left side of the road that is not water front. We chose this site due to the time of they year we visited (July) because we valued shade over direct water access. The site was very easy to enter and exit. #5 - This is a pull-through, but you have to back out to leave since there are two very inconvenient trees that prevent you from driving out when it's time to leave. It's a nice site though beyond that; meets all the other basic requirements. If you have a small camper, you could possibly drive straight out, but anything bigger than 24' I just think you'd have to back out. #9 - This is a back-in. Nothing spectacular about this site, nothing bad, either. It's on the lake and is easy to back in and leave. Trees are not a major concern and provide decent shade. # 11 - This site was fine, however, site #13 is "backwards" to the flow of the road. To enter #13, you have to go the wrong direction to back in. The problem this caused me was the person in #13 didn't back up all the way in and his tow vehicle blocked my access into site #11. It was an elderly couple and they were completely set up, so I backed in around him. It was a very tight fit. I could have been a jerk and made him re-set up, but we made it work, barely, but the other site was completely in the way. Site #11 is easy to park, so long as someone isn't in your way. While I have never stayed in #13, it is very inconvenient. Do not get that one unless it's a last resort. Parking is backwards, trees also complicate where you have to park it if you have slides and an awning. Overall, the park is very nice. As others have stated, trees complicate driving when you have a trailer but does not prevent it, you just need to be aware. Site #10 is the site I think would be the best overall, despite not having stayed in it. Large, easy to park and leave, pull-through, and on the lake. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Small campground. 20 sites. 18 are sites reserveable, 2 are 1st come 1st served. Majority of sites around a small pond that had 2 fishing piers. Nice to have concrete pads, but just long enough for our 35 trailer. Not alot of space for Tow vehicle off pad. Tree location gave parking & leaving a challenge. We had to back out of our "pull through" space. It wasn't a problem, but could have been if we pulled through the space w/ where trees were. Bathrooms & showers cleaned every morning. Dump station available. Verizon cell service good. Several OATV channels. Lots of great hiking trails, including one with a boardwalk that goes thru an amazing Cypress swamp. Florida state trail also thru the park. We would definitely state here again. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

This is as close to a primitive camp as you will while still enjoy a few amenities. There is a dump station; plan to use that as there are no sewer connections (that we saw at least); for a weekend or a few days, this worked well for us. This is out of the way, but still within reach of Panama City Beach (30 minute drive, more or less) if you wish to spend time on the sand. There are trails through the woods, a small fishing lake and the people we encountered were friendly; even though a few of them were loud and partying late one night. We've stayed here a couple of times and will go back; no reservations but it is usually not crowded and it is a bit out of the way so you won't have to worry about crowds. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

The camp host is friendly and helpful, always offering to provide assistance. Stayed a total of 2 weeks. During Spring Break season was the busiest with all the sites occupied, but by the time we left it was just us and another camper beside the camp host. Walked some of trails, although some others are still under water due to flooding the previous Fall. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Small campground in the oldest state forest in Florida. It's a nice place and close to Panama City Beach. During hunting season it usually is full of hunters, but is a nice place. You can fish, hike, bring your horses to ride, or trail ride on your bike. We camped at Pine Log State Forest Recreation Area in a Tent Trailer.
