We loved this park, there was ample space in between the sites and our site was pretty shaded throughout the day. There was enough room for our kids to run around and play. The campground and bathrooms were very clean. The campground managers were very nice. They took pride in keeping the campground clean. We had three that were living right across from us. The Salt Springs were beautiful and we enjoyed swimming in them. I would definitely come back and stay here. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: May, 2019 - $22.00
Overall Rating:

Whoever did the layout of this campground really knew what they were doing. The sites are all back-ins, but they are angled to where it is an easy back-in. They are a comfortable distance apart. The hookups are right where they should be. They all have 20-30-50 amp service with on/off switches. All the roads and sites are paved, with the exception of the primitive camping area. The grounds are well cared for, and the many trees are well trimmed. There are 3 modern, clean, up to date restrooms/showers, two in the RV section and one in the Primitive. There is some road noise from highway 19, but it isn't bad at site 30. The lower numbered ones are a lot closer to the road. The campground is operated by American Land and Leisure Inc. under a special use permit with the US. Forest Service and is located in the Ocala National Forest. There are bears in the woods. Be aware, there is virtually NO cellphone signal here, and only a few OTA TV signals strong enough to watch. There is WIFI around the office, however even though I could connect to a weak signal, I couldn't get on the internet. Maybe closer to the office it would be better. The park is right off Hwy. 19 N. which is a very good highway and very easy to get to. The main attraction here is The Salt Springs swimming area which is on the Recreation Area property. The water is around 74 degrees, and as clear as tap water. 5 geysers come up from the Florida Aquifer to feed the springs. There is a boat rental, although it was closed when we were there. There is a store and gift shop near the springs. This area has a fascinating history, and if the store has a copy of "Salt Springs, life in the big scrub" by Carey Ferrell, it is a great read. Just up and down highway 19 are gas stations, restaurants, a Laundromat, and a well stocked Dollar store. The nearest big stores are in Palatka. We were impressed with the friendly staff, cleanliness and layout. We will be back whenever we can. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Travel Trailer.

This is a gem of a park, located in a National Forest and is very convenient in proximity to the many springs in the area. Most of the sites have shade trees that provide at least a half day, if not all day shade. The lower numbered sites (1-12) have more space but are not as shady. All have hard surface pads in the full hook up area and appear to be about the same length. This is one of the best managed campgrounds in the Nat Forest system. The personal enforced the basic rules (no parking in street or on grass) and were quick to clean the sites after campers departed. It was quiet on the weekend. The staff in the front office were also helpful in answering our questions on where to go, what to see...We stayed in site 34 which was too close site 33 for our liking. However, we were able to park our 34' motor home, small kayak trailer and Jeep on the pad. We will definitely return here to camp. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Paddle the Salt Springs Run (spring to Lake George), @ 10 mile round trip. OR trailer kayaks to Silver Glen to swim and paddle to Lake George, about a 1 mile trip. Rentals available there. OR paddle Juniper Springs @ 7 mile one way trip. Beautiful paddle, lots of work and full of turtles, snakes & gators, which will not bother you unless you bother them! No swimming! Rentals and pickup service available at Juniper. Go on on weekdays to miss the crowds.

We love this park, though the sites were close in places but the backyard was huge. They have 50/30 service AND sewer! There is a boat launch and a warm water fed spring. The park is so clean! We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Motorhome.

Though in the middle of the forest, turn right on exit from the park. There is a dive bar on the left hand side but the food is out of this world! Walmart is a distance away 30-45 minutes, There is a fruit/ taco stand and a grocery store just outside the park.

This is a fantastic park—FHU park with level paved pads and lots of room between sites. Good mix of sun and shade. All sites have fire put, grill, picnic table and patio area. Bathrooms are clean. Staff is always cleaning and available. There is a camp store by the springs. The Springs were great—clean, cool and fun. There is a very small town center with two restaurants. Two gas stations with convenience foods are in town as well. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Motorhome.

We stayed at Salt Springs for two weeks and we were very happy with our stay. Our large back-in site (#1) was at the far end of the RV loop, with no other sites across from us or to our left. The full hookup utilities were conveniently located for us, and easy to use. The only downside to our site was the tree cover at that end is very thin between the highway and the park, making for some traffic noise at times. The asphalt paved sites are all equipped with a fire pit, a BBQ, and a picnic table. Our AT&T hotspot service was poor here, but our Verizon hotspot and phone service was excellent. We did not use the free WiFi service the park provides. The bathrooms were in good condition and cleaned regularly. We didn't use the showers, preferring our own. We went to the springs on a beautiful sunny day, and we experienced a wonderful musical treat by "Lona", as she created her own brand of music on a variety of wooden flutes. There's a small strip mall across the highway from the park with a Dollar General, the Square Meal breakfast and lunch restaurant, a laundromat, a hair dressers, and a post office. A larger grocery store is just a short distance down the highway, as is the Bass Champions Restaurant with great sea food choices, but oddly, no bass on the menu. My understanding is that the owner is an avid bass fisherman, but can't serve uninspected meat. She did say she would prepare your own catch for you though, if you brought it in. All in all, we were very pleased with our stay, and will definitely be back in the future. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Motorhome.

I usually wait a bit after leaving a camp ground to write a review, but since the neighbors @ 3 am are still going strong with their party, now seems appropriate. There are a lot of staff at this camp grounds, they all have golf carts and are very actively driving around, yet not one enforces dogs running freely or the 6 foot leash rule. There are large dogs loose every where, some are on 20 foot long ropes, some run freely, and the barking is crazy annoying. I did report this as 2 decided to visit my camp site and pee on some of our items and forced us inside. That was 8 days ago, still running freely. One night a large lab was running after a squirrel and ended up under our RV pulling loose the sewer, elec and making for a rude surprise wake up call. Part of the issue is there is no ranger or other authority person to enforce the rules, the park is run by a private company. Quiet hour will also only work if enforced. I have to give the neighbors a solid "10" for hitting the pickup bed every time when throwing their empty beer cans into it from their fire pit. Pros: nice biking around the area, hiking and had many sightings of gators, manatees, turtles and birds. Sites are level and full hook ups, big trees and squirrels every where. Price for senior NP is nice. Cons: wifi is close to non existing, cell service is good about 25 minutes from the camp ground (ATT), bath houses are not heated so the walls and floors are wet from humidity, no laundry room, dogs can be off leases, quiet hours not enforced. lots of road noise. I won't be back. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Motorhome.

We stayed a week in our 5th wheel travel trailer. We found the park the be clean, well maintained, and conveniently located to all of the kayaking runs we intended to visit. As others have noted, the Salt Springs are wonderfully refreshing and enjoyable. We stayed in site 56, next to the restrooms. Good WiFi reception, and while not blazing fast, it was adequate for getting mail and checking web sites. We also had decent Verizon LTE speeds. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Beautiful Country Club looking entry, paved roads, 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, paved long sites with mowed green grass between them. The sites are so huge that 2 would be 3 in a commercial campground. They say there is no cell phone coverage but we have 2 bars on our Verizon. They keep the trees trimmed up so there is no worry of scratching the sides of your RV and we are able to pick up Dish. Didn't use but checked out the woman's bath house. Very nice modern 3 showers with private doors with a bench for shower gear. 3 commodes one being handicap as was one of the three showers. The beautiful Salt Springs is just a stone's throw for swimming and snorkeling. Lake George is nearby for fishing. With the Golden Age pass it is only $19.50 per day or for you young wipper snappers it is $31.50 a day. Still cheap compared to commercial parks! We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Motorhome.

Stayed here one night on our way north. Great facility - paved roads, easy to navigate, lots of trees, fire pit, picnic table. It was Easter weekend, lots of families out riding bike, playing in the water (surprisingly clear!), hiking, enjoying nature. Very nice paved level pad to park on. T-Mobile had no service, Verizon was spotty. It's a steal for the price. Wait...why are we writing a review? Don't tell anyone about this place! :-) We'll stay here again as we pass through the area, giving ourselves longer to enjoy all it offers. This is a very nice campground with paved roads and sites. Not much foliage but there are shade trees. The space between sites was adequate. Check-in was easy and the staff were very personable. The bathhouse water is lukewarm at best. Beware ticks and chiggers in grass. Cell service is spotty. We probably will not camp here again as it is very remote. Nice park. The utilities work well and the sites are relatively level and easy to get into. We stayed two weeks. There are about 20 tv channels but we had NO t-mobile cell service. A five mile drive down the road got us cell service. The park has WiFi that works (for the most part). Most sites have a tree or two, a table, and a fire pit. The staff is great. It is a quiet place but is in the middle of nowhere. There are two gas stations with stores, a Dollar General, and a couple small restaurants/drive-ins. It is walking distance to the pretty spring to side beside or swim in. A Walmart and other stores are in Palatka to the north and Ocala to the SE. both are 20-30 miles from the CG. If you want to relax and enjoy nature, this is the place. We camped at Ocala National Forest / Salt Springs Rec Area in a Motorhome.
