Like others before me, I'll tell you to ignore the poor reviews. This is not a typical campground, by any means. It is an older park that has mostly park models, some permanent travel trailers and fifth wheels in it, along with new (some being built as we are here) concrete stilt homes. By my nearest count there might be 30 to 40 'camping' spots in here. Some of the units are weekend getaways for folks in the Miami area, some are seasonal and yearly rentals, and yes, there are spots for travel trailers and fifth wheels. We live in Lee County FL, and this is our second time here in a month. There is a strong Hispanic ethnic here, and we enjoy conversing with them and enjoying the music they play in the evenings. As well, there are folks here from all over the US and Canada. We just love this place! We are in spot 230 again, and are very happy with this spot. We are set in between two stilt homes that have recently been built. Our space is as wide as three campers and then some, with a concrete pad. We are on the canal that leads out to Buttonwood Sound, and the view is terrific. People here are friendly, ALL of them. The staff, other campers, residents, and weekenders alike. There is a boat ramp and boat parking, a beautiful swimming pool with a large deck, tennis, and a play area for kids. There is new management here as of late, and a great deal of upgrades to amenities and landscaping have been done, even during the month we were not here. Security here is excellent, as no one gets in without a pass card or decal on their vehicle. If you don't mind a diverse campground like this, want to be on or near the water, then this is the place. We've already booked for a spot on Buttonwood Sound for this upcoming November and can't wait to be back! We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Travel Trailer.

Run don't walk. This is the worst RV park we've ever stayed in. First they lost our confirmed reservation. Second unless you have a 30 foot sewer hose you cannot connect. No cable TV even though they advertised it. Forth, AC trip.the breaker's that are worn out. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

The other reviews are somewhat true, this is mainly a colony of permanently parked trailers, plus a few permanent two and three story vacation homes. There are very few open motorhome sites. We are full-time motorhome travelers (in our sixties) and lucked into a great spot, right near the pool and Marina for three weeks in February. We ignored the reviews and took our chances, and ended up loving Calusa. There is a large population of Spanish speaking, mainly Cuban-heritage folks that come here. But there is also a large group of snowbirds from the Midwest and New England. We made good friends with both groups. The park's Valentine party was really fun -- the DJ played 50s-60s oldies for the first hour, then Latin music later. The pool is beautiful--busy on weekends, quieter during the week. Beautiful sunset viewing, and great boat access if you have kayaks or a boat. The office is well organized, the staff friendly and polite, and security is vigilant. You use a card to get in and out. Publix and Kmart are right across the Overseas Highway. Maybe we were lucky to avoid noisy neighbors at our site. Then again, we also enjoyed being invited out to Cuban culture night on the last Friday of the month in Miami, and partying at home in the park one night with American/Cuban friends. Don't let the bad reviews sway you -- for us this was a gem -- but what site you get may make a huge difference. We had Site 68 -- wonderful for our likes. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

This CG is a gated resort of 98% permanent units. From a bicycle ride-around, I'd say that there are only about a half-dozen available "camping" lots. Reservations highly recommended. Day use visitors are mostly there for the marina to launch boats. Staff are nice but oriented to their long-term residents. Lots of people-noise, particularly loud music. Available sites are level, gravel with FHU/30/50 with a concrete patio. No fire rings. Sites are very tight and roadways are narrow - no pull-thrus. Parking my 40' fiver was challenging and I was on a corner, giving me some wiggle room. Nice pool but no available car parking (golf cart parking only). I recommend bicycles. We were in site 323, back-in, right on the water with breath-taking sunset vistas - well worth the parking hassle. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Key Largo is a laid-back, vacation village with a permanent population of just over 10K people. Everything is situated on both sides of US route 1. There is no "downtown". There are local eateries but no big chains, a couple of big chain hotels plus local inns. Publix and Winn-Dixie grocery stores nearby. A few gas stations but not all have diesel. Local diesel was $2.159. Dinner at the Pilot House was a bit pricey but we'll worth the money. Fall-off-the-bone ribs, literally.

Overall Rating:

This campground is NOT a campground. It's a colony of 5th wheels parked permanently with enough space to park a boat or a car by their side. Most people have converted this space into some sort of living space that varies from carports to tiled and permanent structures. The property is divided by a canal lined with boats. The place is tight, over crowded, and incredibly noisy since playing music VERY LOUDLY in the RVs, boats, and monster trucks that cruise the narrow roads night and day seem to be the main pastime.

So if you come all the way to Key Largo looking for relaxing days, lovely sunsets and gentle tropical nights, STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.

If you want to party, scream instead of talk, and pretty much experience what it is to live in a foreign colony, then you will love it.

Whatever you do, stay away from site 325. Even party people must sleep at some time, but this people play think they are running a 24/7 salsa club and the speakers are kept at their capacity all day long.

We were looking forward to enjoying the sunset. There is no place reserved for this purpose.

It is not a dog friendly place. You have to pay $5.00 fee per pet and there is not one inch of green space for the dog to do its thing. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

The site's are very tight because of the patio being in the middle of the site. The roads are too narrow to try to back into the sites because of the many permanent residents parking ever where. Loud music played until the wee hours of the morning. The pool however was very large and nice. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

Impromptu trip south to get out of the cold landed us here for 5 nights. Upon arrival the staff in a golf cart lead our motorhome through the VERY tight maze to the wrong site thus returning to the beginning to start all over again. Upon backing into the site, traditionally my wife gets behind the wheel and I get out and direct the maneuvering into the site and glad I did. Just in time I discovered huge “cleats” anchored in the ground probably from a former permanent tenant and the likes of which would really have torn up any tire that should run over them. There were 6 in two rows and now we were trying to maneuver to avoid them yet keep room in the very tight spot to open our slides. That alone I would not stay here again. Regarding the tight maze of road talking to a neighbor they showed us the bay door that got ripped out of their rig upon their arriving, maneuvering their rig and they hit the rocks making a sharp near impossible corner. No I would not stay here again ever. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

The park was very tight with mostly permanent residents. We were parked close to a construction project where they were building a vacation residence. The folks next to us had 3 dogs. They left them out and walked away. Two chihuahuas were nasty and went after a child who walked through the space. There was a German Shephard that was not friendly. After numerous calls to security, they first left a note on their trailer that they were in violation. A subsequent complaint brought animal control. After rounding up the two yappers, the animal control officer found a name and phone number on a dog tag and called them. They came and were told not to leave their dogs alone and not to leave them outside for the night. Animal control left and they let the dogs outside. Security told me they were leaving in the morning. I asked them and was told they would be there another week. We asked for a refund and was given it. We left. No, I would not go back again. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

This is what I would call a "crappy" campground and not worth the money. Poorly run and maintained. Very old and not kept up. Bathrooms are shoddy as well as the laundry room. We were told by previous person on our site that it is extremely noisy and crowded on the weekends...we are leaving before that. Maintenance people do not speak English. I do not recommend this place. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

A big rig does not mean 40ft but should be referred to as a 45ft RV. We tried to get inside the park and had to retreat for fear of risk VS reward. Campground rash was visible everywhere especially on the trees and buildings where RV’s had made contact trying to make the turns. We were forced to make two 3 points turns to make it around the park to get to the so called big rig sites. Once we arrived at the site assigned to us it was too narrow to open our slide outs. This is a very old mobile home travel trailer park thus the reason for it being so tight to get around. Would recommend 38ft or less RV for access however you’re still going to be faced with the problem of using your slide outs especially if your neighbors have their slides open. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

After staying at another Key Largo Campground and leaving before our stay was up, we found Calusa to be a welcome surprise. Clean, well kept, with a gorgeous new salt water pool and marble showers and ample laundry. Sure the folks speak Spanish but where don't they in the Keys?? They're a fun loving and sometimes a little loud group, but we loved it so much, we are back again. Security is tight and shopping is close by. The pool area and restrooms were very nice and location is great. It was nice during the week but Friday-Sunday were crowded and extremely loud. Lots of loud music and few English speaking patrons. We will probably look elsewhere next year. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Travel Trailer.

Incredibly (potentially) gorgeous site, right on the bay, but almost impossible to get in it with a big rig. Peaceful and calm: at first. Then came the Labor Day invasion! Uncontrolled children running everywhere, boom boxes blaring incredibly loud, and no consideration of people who did not want to hear loud music till late at night, or even at noon. We left early. We will not return. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.

We almost canceled our reservation when we saw the reviews here but we are glad we did not. We stayed on one of the waterfront lots (215 or 216) and we got here on a Sunday night. I think it is pretty busy on the weekends. There is a largely Hispanic long term residential population at the front of the park but I felt very safe. The pool is still under construction but I saw people working on it and estimate it being done within 60 days. Staff was very helpful. Have never had a site with a better sunset view and the kids could fish right off the back of the site. Would definitely stay here again during the week. We knew before we arrived the pool was under repair. Not pet friendly: you must take dogs outside the park, then there is nothing there either. Internet $, does not work too well. Park is for park model/perm trailers. Entrance road very narrow with low hanging branches. Management is not surly but not happy with temporary MH, it's mostly transient people here, was not happy with that. Security people were not very friendly. All in all, the place is an overpriced poor facility. I would never stay here again, nor recommend to anyone else. We camped at Calusa Campground Resort and Marina in a Motorhome.
