This is another nice Florida state park. It is convenient for an overnight stopover when traveling I-75. The campground roads are a little narrow with trees but it can be safely navigated with care. Bathhouses are nice, good OTA-TV signals, and I had a good T-Mobile signal. It's a good campground to hike and bike. Total cost for one night (Florida senior resident) was $16.78 with the camping fee, reservation fee, and tax. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The gate into the park is narrow, and the one going out even narrower, but passable with care, as are the roads in the park. The sites are all back-ins, but are angled so they are easy. There are many OTA TV stations, and we both had phone service. This is wilderness, so bring bug repellent. The water had an odor, but didn't taste bad. The trees are well trimmed and present no hazard. A must see is the "Visitor's Center" where they have a 20 minute movie about the area and the Prairie. It is just a short walk to an observation tower, where you can look for Wild Horses, (we saw 3 or 4) and Bison. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Micanopy takes up just a little more than 1 square mile. Most of the downtown businesses are Antique Stores and open around 11 AM. Notice the "around". It's a very laid back town. There is a museum and the attendants were very informative and helpful. They have a lot of artifacts from the area. Admission is a donation. There are 2 Cafes/Deli's in town. Where we ate, "Old Florida Deli", has good food, service and WIFI. the other, "Coffee and Cream Cafe", we didn't try. Both have outside tables, so are pet friendly. There is "Mosswood Farm Store, which has a bakery along with honey, jelly and other local produce, and WIFI. On highway 441, there are 2 gas stations. One has a restaurant that is said to have very good BBQ. We went in to have a look and it smelled good! They were busy, which is a good sign. The other has a Subway. 12 miles South on 441 is a dollar store. Like any small town, expect to pay more for stuff.

Paynes Prairie State Park has some beautiful vistas. The campground itself is a bit confusing to find but we eventually found our site. I normally have no problem with back-ins, but the campground road (one-way) was so narrow that getting into our particular site was a challenge. The site was nice and level with partial shade. It was just long enough for our coach with our Jeep towed parked parallel to the front of our rig. As with other state parks, there is zero WI-FI or cable. OTA was limited to about ten channels, only two of which were major networks (ABC and Fox). The best part of this park is the observation tower which, when climbed, gives you an unobstructed view of the prairie where a few bison and wild Spanish horses were grazing. It's a bit of walk from the parking lot but well worth it. The tiny hamlet of Micanope is nearby. We drove over to it for breakfast but it has little else to offer other than to give you a feel for small town life. Very quiet with no traffic problems ! We also drove over to Cross Creek to see the home of late author Majorie Kinnan Rawlings. There was nobody there but a maintenance man so we didn't get the usual tour. Next time, I guess. The dump station was very spacious, so emptying our tanks when leaving was quick and painless. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

Great park. Quiet. The sites are level limerock, shady and most large. Good side privacy. Hosts and staff are great. There are plenty of trails and paved roads to hike and or bike. Informative visitor center and observation tower facing the prairie. There is a large day park with pavilions, grills, picnic tables, playground and boat launch, and a primitive and equestrian camp. Near Gainesville, if you get "bored" with camping or need to shop. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

We can only offer superlatives for this park and its very clean, very affordable and generously sized campsites. It is a real gem in the off the beaten path/beach side of Florida and well worth any one's time. Only slight complaint concerns weak phone and gps signal in the area. The visitors center and museum with observation tower of the prairie were wonderful. WE hope to come back next year. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed 1 night passing through the area, but have made reservations to go back. Been in tighter, just have to be careful. Plenty of sites big enough for a 40ft rig. Foliage between sites and generally all sites are very shady. Not much OTA tv and 2 bars of Verizon. Close to I-75 at hwy 234 exit. Camp hosts were nice and facilities were clean. State park campground about 8 miles south of Gainesville, FL. Beautiful park. The campground is densely wooded and road is narrow. We were able to get to our site in a 34' motorhome with a bit of weaving and dodging. Quite a few larger 5th wheels here and a tag axle Class A, so it is doable. The sites are large and very private due to trees. Water and electric conveniently located. No way you will get satellite but good enough variety of OTA stations. NB campground will close 15 July 18 for renovations. Reopening date not known. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

Once off the main park road, the access road for the campsites was a little tight, but manageable. Our site was not very deep, but there was quite a bit of foliage between us and the neighbors, allowing some privacy. Our stay was very quiet, and we enjoyed getting a few days of rest as headed north. The 30 amp electric was stable with good voltage, and the water pressure was good. Our Verizon and AT&T cell services work well here. Satellite reception through the trees was difficult, but we did get a signal with our portable dish. Over the air TV signals from Gainesville were also available. Paynes Prairie is being added to our return visit list. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

My rate is based on using the park as a one-night pass thru on the way to another location. The roads were tight for my 33ft motorhome and backing in was made difficult by all the beautiful trees. Site was dirt and not level. But the price was GREAT!! We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

Stayed two days in 27 foot motorhome with tow car in site 46. Campground was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting something sunny and found it located in a beautiful shady oak hammock. Spaces were fairly far apart and there was some vegetation between most of the sites. Huge park. Drove to north end to walk the trail into the middle of the preserve. Hot and sunny and no shade. Interesting and informative interpretive signs. Bison and horses far away in the distance. More alligators then I have seen in one place in Florida -- including a 10 foot one sunning himself in the middle of the trail -- and I've canoed camped and lived in Florida since the 50s so that is saying something. My site -- and some others -- required leveling blocks. We camped at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.
