A wonderful small campground in the middle of a huge preserve. Good separation between sites. For more seclusion stay in the Equestrian loop. You do not need to have a horse to stay in this loop and it was deserted while the Family loop was about 70% full. Very quiet area, lots of wildlife. A real gem, I will definitely return. Note: the campground is about 5 miles into the park down a rough gravel road; just take it slow to minimize the bumps. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We really enjoyed our stay here in mid-February 2018 - once we got to the campground. The major drawback that we found with the park is the road back to the campground, which has washboarded pretty badly. We drove it at 5MPH and did a lot of weaving. Our campsite was level and tree-shaded, with plenty of room to put out the slide and awning. The comfort station was very nice and clean, with a separate accessible shower/toilet room on each side. A single washer and dryer are available, with a bonus donated library. The major attraction for us was that the park is recognized as Florida's first Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association - so of course it was cloudy the whole time. AT&T reception was good, with 2-3 bars. Overall, we loved the place and definitely will return. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Bring your own provisions - there is no campground store and the campground is a fair distance away from a grocery / convenience store. There are volunteers in the campground who offer astronomy talks when weather permits. There are also equestrian and astronomy camping areas.

This was our first visit to the park. My first thought after we left the black top roads to travel on the dirt road into the park was that we made a terrible mistake. The road surface was washboard, we had to slow to 5 MPH so as not to destroy the motor home. Any faster was unbearable. However once in the park, our outlook changed for the better. The park is wonderful, quiet and relaxing. There are lots of hiking trails and plenty of nature to view. It is wide open country. The prairie has plenty of wet lands, even in the dry winter months. I would suspect the summer months would be untenable with thunder storms and rain. Our site was grass in open sun, but most sites are tree covered. The sites in our loop had just 20 and 30 amp service. The bath house and showers were new and clean. Dump station was near by. While we were there the staff scraped the road to remove the wash board. We departed three days later and the washboard was returning. We slowed to 5 MPH and was now used to the speed. The distance at this speed was about two miles. We enjoyed our time here and will definitely return. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

You really need to enjoy nature at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, because that's all there is to do here. Extremely quiet, peaceful, and isolated. We saw deer, gators, feral pigs, a thousand different bird species, and more. Heard coyotes at night - uncomfortably closely while stargazing away from camp in the early morning! Took the buggy tour, with an excellent tour guide, not to be missed if you're here that time of year... and I would recommend considering carefully when you do come. The prairie is to a great extent seasonal wetlands, and in the summer/fall many trails would be underwater; I imagine the bugs would be quite something then too. The stargazing can be hit-and-miss, as we found; the full moon is beautiful but it blots out the sky pretty thoroughly. You don't just walk in and see the Milky Way anytime, despite the dark sky designation. Beyond the nature spotting & stargazing, activities- even in the vicinity outside the park - are sparse. We had fun with the family, but at times couldn't shake the feeling that we were disturbing everyone else from their tranquility with our noisy three kids. All in all, it's a beautiful place, as are most Florida state parks, but it'll probably be a little while down the road until we return. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Level, wide, sand/shell sites. Friendly, informative staff. Clean facilities and park. Quiet, quiet park, with miles of hiking/biking trails. Trails are mostly in the open prairie (wet and dry prairies) and a couple in a hammock. Good wildlife viewing: deer, caracara and turkies in campground. Birds, gators, wild pigs along trails and in sloughs. If you like night skies with no light polution this is the place to be. Florida's first Dark Sky park. There are 3 camping areas: family (standard site setup), equestrian (corral), astronomy (no trees). Excellent park, well maintained. We've been here several times in various months. Like late October, early November best. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

No close-by stores; bring supplies. Swamp buggy guided tour on weekends Nov-Mar a must. Make reservations in advance. Wander out of campground to view night sky without light pollution. Awesome.

We really enjoyed this state park. We stayed in two sites during our stay; both were level and had electric and water. FYI, if you have a satellite dish, sites 16-20 look like they would work. There is also an equestrian campground down the road. Road into the park was gravel but the dust was not bad, well worth the drive back. Make sure if you want to do the weekend buggy ride that you reserve ahead of time. There are miles and miles of bike trails but many are sandy, so you need fatter tires to navigate them. Verizon signal was good here. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

This was a great park in the middle of a large prairie. Shell and sand base surrounded by palms and live oaks. If here just a few days, bring your supplies. You're a long ways from town. We had water and electricity. Dump nearby. Verizon LTE worked well. We had good satellite reception. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Quiet, quiet quiet. Big park, 54000 acres, small shaded campground. Star-gazing and birding paradise. Over 100 miles of hiking/biking trails. Great staff. Clean facilities. There are two campgrounds: family and equestrian. The sites are shaded with level, packed dirt sites. Room between. 50 amp only in equestrian loop. 30 amp in family loop. Birds and deer wandered through the campground. Well into the prairie there is a group campsite. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

We took the swamp buggy ride into the prairie. Excellent guide. Take the swamp buggy ride into the prairie if you are there on a weekend between November and March. A must do. There's a small store about 7 miles from the cg, but better to bring your own provisions to start with. Be prepared for an awesome dark sky experience. 10 astronomy stations set up for star-gazers (water and elect.)

Overall Rating:

The campground is great, trees and a wide area to maneuver through. It is a very remote campground. Excellent for star gazing. From the entrance it is 4 miles down a shell rock road through the prairie to the family campground. Go slow and enjoy the view. There is a small sundry store about 7 miles from the Entrance on 700A, but it is a good idea to bring all your supplies in with you. It is a shell rock from the entrance which gets your vehicle covered in dust on dry days. Mud on wet days. Firewood is available for $5. Pay the Iron Ranger. The bathroom/shower facility is excellent. I used the very clean and spacious single bath. There were several tent campers. I did have to make a u-turn for the dump station but plenty of room. Trash dumpster and recycle bins are also located at the campground exit. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I read many of the previous reviews and they are all accurate. This is a small, nice, quiet, remote campground. Make sure you bring all your food and other needs in with you because it's a long way back out. It was a gravel road from the entrance (which is small and not clearly marked for entrance fees, on the honour system, so bring exact amount), which gets your RV all covered in dust. The site is great with trees and a wide area to manoeuvre into as well as picnic table and fire pit. You can buy firewood too (on the honour system). The bathroom/shower facility is great; very clean and spacious. There were a variety of size RV's there as well as tent campers. We saw deer and birds. At night the star gazing is awesome but the best for us were all the fireflies! I love fireflies and we don't have them where we live so that was a treat! The dump station and trash were convenient and they even had recycle bins. Yay for them! We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

There's not much to do around there but relax and enjoy the scenery. There's an office that was only open a few hours on Saturday & Sunday. We brought our bikes thinking there would be trails to ride on but it's only a sandy road that's mostly soft sand and very difficult to ride on. We only found one walking/hiking path but I'm sure there were others.

If you like quite, dark nights, and remoteness, this is the park for you. Wildlife viewing is abundant. Sites are dirt/gravel, close together compared to most state parks, and most are wooded. This is a dark skies sight. A resident volunteer provides sky gazing opportunities twice daily. Weekends buggy rides are made out into the prairie. Buy groceries and fuel before heading to the park because it is miles and miles to either of those. Park staff and volunteers are very helpful. I'd return here. There is only one pull through and it was used primarily by tent and trailer campers during our 4-day stay. Super clean restroom/bath house. Don't understand logic of only 30amp in main CG which has the only bathhouse. This section is the "big rig side". The equestrian side has mainly tents and smaller class b/c and trailers. Found this state park nice, restful, and beautiful. Trails were great for walking not biking. Road in/outside was horrible on suspension and very dirty/dusty. However, we love the tranquility and solitude of this park. We'll definitely be back. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.

Wonderfully relaxing place to spend a few days. Camp Hosts were friendly and very helpful. Make swamp buggy tours reservations before you arrive; they get booked up very fast. Star gazing at night is incredible; no city lights to interfere. Wild life (birds, turkeys, etc.) all around. We camped at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park in a Motorhome.
