Older Park, wish the sites were Gravel. Informative Ranger talks along with a restored Fort. The Fort was nice, most shopping was about 12 miles to the north. I wish it had sewer, only a Dump station. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We spent a week here. Most sites are short and very close to the road but there are several sites for larger RVs. Our site had just enough depth for our 36' MH and toad. The sites are gravel and sand so a good outside door mat helps a lot. Our site was roomy but some are quite close. The voltage at our site was low and our ems shut power down a few times for low voltage. There are 3 loops each with a bathhouse. At least one of the bath houses has laundry facilities. We did not use or check them out. As with many state parks, we did not have sewer but the dump station was convenient. The park staff is very friendly and helpful. NOTE: Most GPS direct to the former gate just north of the current gate. If coming from the north on 301 go just past the closed gate to the main entrance which has large signs at entrance on right. If coming from the south on 301 watch for the signs on the left following the small brown signs on 301. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Thursday mornings there is an interesting tour of Fort Foster from the Seminole wars. Friday evenings they offer a free, very informative camper tram, a ranger led tour of the park. The tram goes through the campground picking up anyone who is waiting at the road in front of one's site. There are several easy trails in the park. There is also a large public pool with gift shop and cafe.

Great little park but so-so campground. No privacy on most sites. Low water pressure in showers, no hot water at bathhouse sinks, dryers not working (leaving several campers with washed and wet clothes to contend with.) Lack of laundry creates quite a problem when you've held off for days or been staying at campgrounds without it only to find out they're lacking where they're supposed to be. Great if you like surprises, or wearing wet clothes. Hopefully, this was just an aberration, but nobody on the staff seemed too concerned about the problem, other than providing directions to a laundromat. They said laundry units were privatized and not the park's property. If that's the M.O., they should probably just state that they don't have them them and let it be a nice surprise when/if they do happen to be working. Trails along river are wonderful, but others are just country roads. Great blackened mahi sandwich at the grill compensated somewhat for problems. Pool looks enticing, but wasn't open because of cold spell. Despite my issues, I'm still glad to see this segment of natural Florida being protected. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Motorhome.

Most sites are very close, short and tight. We were in site 8 which was wide, but had 3 sites butted up behind us. Site was sand and level. Nice fire ring and new picnic table. Hook ups were good. Great TV and Verizon reception. Some sites the hook up was at the front of the site. Restrooms are clean. Rangers and staff were friendly and responsive. On Weds night there was a pot luck. We did not attend. On Thursday am there was coffee and donuts which was well attended by campers. Rangers gave a presentation on what there is to do at the park, history of park etc. If you want to tour the Fort it is only open for a tour at 1030 on Thursdays. Lots to do in the park. Hillsborough River has the only class 2 rapids in Florida. The canoe/kayak launch is beyond the rapids. They are protected. you can hike to them and see them, but unable to kayak/canoe. Several nice trails. Playgrounds, pool, snack shop and well stocked store. Nice bike trails. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Florida has some very nice state parks, and this is one of them. We are moving Fromm state park to state park for November and December, and we started at Hillsborough. There are two main camping loops, and the one we stayed in has more RVs, with more tents in the other loop (though plenty of spots for RVs in the other loop, and we will be in that loop in December). The sites are generally flat, with grass/dirt surfaces. The roads in the loops are crushed rock/gravel, and the park roads are asphalt and well maintained. The sites have water and electricity (30/50) and there is a dump station. The restrooms are cleaned and well maintained, and the showers had plenty of hot water. The park has a camp store with a grill/restaurant, and there is also a pool (did not use) and kayak/bike rentals. There is a kayak access to the river. The park is fairly quiet and there is an abundance of wildlife. There are good trails for hiking in the park. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Motorhome.

Park roads were full of potholes. Restrooms and showers were filthy. Café and store not open for whole week when we were there. Pool was nice but cost $4.00 to use. If you left the pool for any reason you had to pay another $4.00 to re-enter. Staff at front gate were marvelous. Last but not least the mosquitoes were HORRIBLE. I have lived in Florida for 30 years and never experienced this kind of bug infestation. They told us they did not spray because "people" wanted to keep it like Florida was 150 years ago. This was due to the entire park being a glorified swamp. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Well sorry to say this one is off our list. We were not impressed when we saw people laying around in vans and seemed homeless and left piles of trash when they left. I have no issues with kids in an RV park, but when they have no supervision and appear at your site begging money, that was over the top. The concession manager told me how over worked they were and needed help and that was why the pool was closed. "We don't have time to babysit". The site was a little rough to get my 37 footer into with the trees but made it happen. Lots of locals come there on the weekends to party. Nope not going back. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Motorhome.

Only stayed one night prior to dropping the travel trailer off at the nearby Lazy Days RV in Seffner for service. The campground has three loops as noted on Reserve America. Each loop has a bath house. The bath houses are reasonably clean but a little on the older side. Went for a walk around the three campground loops. It is a pleasant campground with lots of trees, etc. Many sites are close together so choose your site carefully if privacy is important to you. The park looks like it has many good hiking and biking areas. We camped in site #67. It was plenty long enough for my 28' TT and tow vehicle without disconnecting. We had excellent OTA TV reception from Tampa. Cell phone service was also good (T-Mobile). We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The drive into the campground area is quite long, and once you leave the main park road, the roads are narrow with fairly tight turns. That said, we had no problems getting to our site with our 34' motorhome. There is enough foliage to provide a small level of privacy between most sites. The 50 amp electric was well located and stable with good voltage, and the water pressure was also good. Satellite reception was difficult due to the many tall trees, but we did manage to find a signal with our portable dish. AT&T and Verizon cell voice and data both worked fairly well for us, and over the air TV stations from Tampa were easy to see. Hillsburough was a good interim stop for us on our way north, and we'll likely be back again. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Motorhome.

Park is large with a circular drive throughout the park. A large pool is available during the summer season. The sites are tree covered. although our site #4, did provide satellite coverage. There was a space between the trees to reach the satellite. We had two bars for cell and internet reception. Good hiking trails are throughout the park, kayaking on the river is very good. The roads in the camping area are tight, trees close to the road offer some challenges. We camped for nine days and will definitely return. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Motorhome.

The paved road around the park makes a one-way loop, with the campground situated fairly far from the entrance. Lots of trees in the campground made getting around very challenging in our 45' fifth wheel. Stayed there two nights, then left for one night, and came back for 5 nights in a different site. Book early, it fills up fast, especially around the Tampa RV super show time. We're 68' connected to the HDT, and echo the advice of a previous poster - large rigs need to choose their site carefully! Probably worth a phone call if you've never been there before, because trees in the wrong place can ruin your day. Turns are tight and branches can be difficult to avoid. However, that being said, this park is amazing. There are several trails to walk, you can bike around the loop perimeter road, the river is calm if you want to canoe or kayak. There's a big pool (too cold when we were there, it was closed), cafe, bike rentals. Beautiful area, peaceful and quiet. About 17 miles to the state fairgrounds where there's lots of shopping. We enjoyed our stay there, hope we can come back again. Site 75 was grass, site 71 was paved and would work for the handicapped, but anyone can take it if there's nothing else available. Since I waited too long to make reservations, that was the case with us. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Great park, especially the staff of rangers and volunteers. They host weekly potluck dinner, morning coffees and really make you feel welcome. Sites are level and big enough, but not overly large. Our site (111) was just long enough for our 30 ft trailer w/no slides and car parked beside it. Loop curve and trees made backing in a little challenging but no complaints. Bath by our site (111) was quite old and never looked clean because of that even when cleaned daily, and water wasn't hot enough for me but OK for wife. I made the trek to the newer bath by site #3 for nice hot shower. Nearest grocery is 15 minutes away, or further if you want more than relatively bare bones Winn-Dixie. 35 minute drive to Ybor City for great restaurants and Saturday farmers market, plus all that Tampa offers. Great cell and OTA TV coverage. Satellite folks will have difficulty due to tree cover. Good water pressure and power (5 hour power failure external to park notwithstanding, and rangers stayed til it came back on around 9PM). Newer baths and full hookups would boost park to a 10. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Entering this heavily wooded state park feels like you've gone back in time. The park itself is quite large, and after entering it takes a while to get to the campground. The park and campground roads are narrow heavily wooded and we brushed quite a few low branches with our motorhome. Inside the campground there are some tight turns that were tough but doable in our 42' motorhome. The single dump station was also a tight squeeze for us with several sharp turns. I'm sure this is all simply because the park is older and RVs have been getting bigger. Our site #10 was one where you pull off to the right side of the road. The site was sloped steeply down away from the road though so we needed lots of blocks under our passenger side tires. The nice thing was that we had no other RVs visible from our camping area, while most of the sites in the campground were packed close together with no privacy. The park is a bit far from "civilization", so if that's what you're going for, it's perfect. If you want to go visit restaurants, stores, etc., it's a decent drive. Showers were dated but functional... though sometimes the water never got hot. Our Verizon worked quite well, but AT&T had one bar, was usable but very slow, and a couple calls got dropped. There are plenty of trails for walking our dog, but since one of the two bridges across the river is closed due to damage, all our walks were "out and back" style, as we couldn't do a loop. We loved the natural feel of the park, but not sure if we'll return given the challenges getting through in a big rig and being so far from town. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Motorhome.

Me and the wife has stayed here a couple of times. WE find the sites to to big and shady. From the main gate to the campground is a long dive. They have nice trails to walk on (which I can't do) They have a wimming pool which seems to never be open. They have a nice gift shop with lots of rentals of bikes, canoes ect. The river is nice with a bridge going across it. There are other small parks in the area you can visit. The near by town has a lot to offer, i.e shopping and restaurants. There is a little whole in the wall placed called "two minute grill" or something very close to that. All I can about this place is you must go. Good food, portions and price. Nearby town, other small parks in the area to visit. I drive all the way to the Tampa fishing peir to go fishing, didn't catch much but it was fun. You can actually park your car on the peir right nect to you while you fish, now that's cool. But it's a .Park, so there is a fee, well worth it.

We stayed at this park right after Christmas and it was very full. There are a lot of sites in the park in three loops. Our site was large enough for our trailer and truck, but the sites are close together so there is not much privacy. The bath house in our loop was pretty decrepit so I walked to another loop to shower. The dumpsters were overflowing so it was a challenge to shove our trash in. The park itself is pretty nice; there is a rapids area along the river that is especially lovely, and some good trails for a leisurely hike. The birding was great. The drive in to get to the campground is a pain as there are dozens of sharp speed bumps to slow everyone down through the day use area. We went into Tampa to visit our son who lives there and had lunch at Coppertail Brewery in Ybor. We had breakfast in Zephyrhills at Sunrise Eatery. Both venues were very good. Zephyrhills is fairly close for supplies and groceries. We camped at Hillsborough River State Park in a Travel Trailer.
