We stayed here over Father's Day Weekend and had a blast with the kids. I would recommend staying near the loop we were in if you plan on going to the beach or playground as it was a quick walk over there. If you want more privacy, I would say 130's to 140's. You might want to bring water shoes for the kids as there are sticks and rocks in the lake. Sites are well maintained...very quiet and peaceful at night. Next time I would try to stay at 108 or 110 as there is more grass there for the kids to run around. - Adam3
Jun 2017 - $48.00
Great campground with numerous lakefront campsites! Pros - level sites, fishing, water activities, great scenery Cons - Not full hookup. - RandyP
Mar 2017 - $32.00
This was the opening weekend for the campground season. Park was in good shape. Area we were in had restrooms only, no bath house. Some site are smaller due to age of campground. Hosts are very friendly, and helpful. This is an old park built in 60's. First site we were reserved on could not get my camper on, even though it said it would accommodate. However hosts allowed us to move with no hassles. Good easy power hook up. Sites on the water are more expensive than inner sites. Weekend crowds book way ahead so you may or may not get a water site when lake is full. Over all good campground and location, as well as value. - RDM1980

Site 12: pull thru, level, paved, long. No sewer. Camp host sent us the wrong way going in to our site. Fortunately, there was room and road to make a turn then back up to get lined up for the site. Camp host leaving was clueless regarding narrow, single exit lane and low limbs and trying to protect our rig. Intended to exit via the entrance since it has two lanes and it was early enough that there was no incoming traffic. The camp host could not understand. Very aggravating! So the last 2 minutes of our stay left a bad taste. Gates in and out are locked from 10:30 PM until 7:30 AM which was a little discomforting regarding safety. I pray no one has a need for an ambulance or firetruck between those hours. A delay in opening the gate could mean life or death. - DandA83
Apr 2018 - $14.00
Nice COE park on the water. Premium sites along the waterfront cost more. Many pull-throughs, only two sites have sewer and they're both back-ins. Paved roads, paved sites, easy access for big rigs. Our site would be shady once the trees fully leaf out, but things were still a bit bare the first week of April. That meant we could see the lake, though! Very quiet at night. There's a day-use area with a large beach, and a marina within biking distance with a nice little bar and grill. The men's bathrooms could use a bit more attention, hubby said they were filthy with feces that needed to be cleaned before he could use the toilet. Not the hosts' fault, probably people who aren't monitoring their children, but if that's going to be the case then perhaps they should be checked/cleaned more often. The ladies side was fine, clean and really good water pressure in the shower. Overall a very nice COE campground. We would return, it's fairly close to Atlanta if you needed to do stuff in the city. - Denise and Glenn
Oct 2017 - $29.00
This is a very nice and wooded campground on the lake. There are lots of trees so not many sites have a clear view of the lake, but you can see the lake through the trees and there is easy access to it. The sites are spacious and have plenty of privacy thanks to the trees. The camp hosts are very nice as well. Verizon worked okay there, but with our booster it was better. AT&T actually worked better than Verizon. The only thing we did not like about this campground is it felt like we had a curfew. They lock the gate so you can't get in or out between 9pm and 7am. Not only does that seem unsafe in case of emergencies, but it's also inconvenient if we wanted to be out past 9pm, or if we had guests that didn't want to have to leave the park by 8:30pm (that's the rule for guests). Our purpose for staying there was to visit my sister who lives in that town and if we went to her house for the evening, we didn't want to have to get home by 9pm so we just ended up spending the night at her house. And when she visited us it was inconvenient that she had to leave by 8:30. This was in October and I believe the hours are a little better in the summer, but it's still a little unsettling knowing you're locked in for the night. In 3 years of fulltime travel we've never been at a campground that does this. We have been at several that have gates, but they always have a code so that people staying there can get in or out after hours. It would be nice if this park would implement a gate with a code. - Love2Camp777

We enjoyed our stay at the campground and were able to access and enjoy the lake. The RV site was easy to pull in to. The site was clean with a little trash in the fire ring. We never used the bath house. The dump station was easy to access and return to our site. Our site was one of the most private. You can see the site on one side but the other side was lake. There were two couples who were camp hosts. One couple was very friendly and kind and thorough in explaining any rules. The other couple was completely rude to almost everyone in our party at one time or another. I would rather not deal with people like that. I probably won't go back to Payne campground due to the unkind camp hosts. - Charlie E
Jun 2018 - $14.00
There are beautiful trees everywhere and our site was very quiet. Site 62 has a small slice of a view of the lake but not much shade. The site was level with gravel; there is a "patio area" that is composed of small rocks with a fire pit and lantern pole. There is only one bathhouse in the campground, which doesn't seem enough, however, I never had to wait. The bathrooms are more than adequate for a state campground, while we were there, one of the showers didn't have a shower head, and staff said they would look into it right away. Camp staff was very friendly and helpful. Interior roads are easy to navigate. Verizon worked great and we received a good selection of OTA channels. We would definitely stay again. - Living the Life
May 2018 - $20.00
Stayed in spot #36 with our 40' motorhome. It was an easy pull through. The spot was at the beginning of a little cul-de-sac, which is how most of the loops are here. It would have been a bit tricky to drive around the curve of the cul-de-sac, but it was easy enough to back up. Dump is at the front. Many spots are heavily treed. Ours was not, which we request for satellite. Most spots have views of the lake. It's a very pretty park, lots of birds singing, little walking trails here and there. Verizon signal was good on and off. Very clean, very quiet, cement pad for concrete picnic table, with grill and fire pit off to the side. We loved it here. - dorcol

Aug 2016 - $26.00
Paved interior roads and sites. We opted to get a 'premium' site overlooking Lake Allatoona. Had walk down access to the lake also.
Sites are very large with a gravel pad for tents/shelter. Concrete picnic table and grill.
Nice beach and boat launch.
A word of caution to big rig owners, call in advance. Didn't see too many sites that would accommodate a 40' rig. - Iceman567
Jun 2015 - $26.00
This campground is small with some tight turns. We stayed here during the week and the campground was nearly empty. The beach for the kids was nice and clean. Thursday and Friday it starting filling up and the quiet went away. The crowds also increased the demand on the shower facility. We would stay here again but I will be very selective of the campsite I choose. - walterwegozz
Aug 2013 - $26.00
This was the first campground we stayed at with a travel trailer. The hosts were very nice and directed us to a different pull-through site than the one we registered with and it was SO much better. Almost all tent sites are on the water and the RV sites are inland, but they are wooded and quiet. I agree with another poster that there are few level sites than can handle large rigs, but we have a 17-footer so that didn't bother us. The lake was close by, fishing was OK, clean restrooms and showers and the swimming area was very well maintained. We will definitely return! - SimeralKing

Very spacious sites. Had our 36 foot fifth wheel with the truck parked in front and our visitors pulled in behind the camper. We reserved a pull through site and you make a hard left turn right after entering, but can be managed. Walked through the rest of the park and agree that the turns can be tight, but again, you have a LOT of room when you get into your site. Trails well marked for hiking. - Graying Mantis
Jan 2019 - $18.00
Most sites are better suited to motor homes and travel trailers with total length 35 feet or less, but there are a few regular sites which can handle longer rigs. We will probably book a premium pull-through site next time for convenience. The bathrooms were very well kept and campsite services worked great! I had a problem with power in my trailer on this trip, but my initial troubleshooting leads me to believe it is a faulty GFCI outlet and not the site power because only that bank of outlets in my trailer lost power. The park staff were also very friendly and helpful. We are looking forward to our next visit! - HR4C
Aug 2018 - $35.00
There is one loop of pull throughs for RV's. As far as I know, you can't reserve a specific site. The problem with these sites is that the ones farther down the line have a terrible slope and road condition coming out of the campsite. We drove slow and were thrown around as we hit pot holes. Luckily our RV was short enough (29') to make the turn onto the loop. It was raining for the one night we stayed so we didn't try the hiking the trails. The gate system was a pain since we arrived after 4 pm. - J and C

This is an older county park. Clean and neat. The roads were paved but narrow, twisty and hilly. The spots were cement and very level. Large rigs may have a difficult time maneuvering. There were picnic tables and fire rings and garbage barrel with a recycle bin at each spot. The view of the lake is beautiful. Bath house is dated but clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful. - esta34950
Sep 2016 - $25.00
We stayed here Labor Day Weekend. All of the State Park and COE campgrounds on Lake Allatoona tend to get reserved early, but this one doesn't. This is a little jewel of a campground. I think the sites are better than the ones at McCaskey Creek COE campground a few miles away. Some of the spots are really better left for tents as they are hard to get into with anything bigger than a class B. Rear lounge trailers have a lot of choices for great views as the back-in sites face the lake. However, in these same sites the patio faces the road or adjacent space with limited views of the lake. The better sites in the park are 8, 11 and 12 if you have a rear lounge and don't require the patio to be facing the lake. We stayed in site 11 and angled our trailer about 45 degrees to the pad and had a good view of the lake from the patio area. Site 14 is a very nice back-in with the patio facing the lake, but is only about 16 ft wide. Sites 24, 25 and 27 are also very nice, but are also a little narrow. Site 27 is on the end of a peninsula with lots of water surrounding it. Site 54 is nice, but also only about 16 ft wide. I would avoid sites 32-37 as they are very close together and on the main road through the campground with not much to view.
The roads are narrow, but easily navigable unless there is a vehicle coming the other way as all roads are two-way. There is a nice beach as you enter the park and nearby in another section of the park is the boat launch area. Water pressure is high (120psi).
The only complaint is how the spots are left by previous campers. Our fire ring was filled with partially burned trash, and we observed many empty spots where the fire rings were used as trash dumps. Despite this, we will return here again.
The campground is closed October through February. - GA Bob
Nov 2008 - $18.00
We have been RVers for 36 years. We find Georgia State and County parks to be among the nation's best. Bartow Gatewood Park was not a disappointment. The foliage was stunning, the campground well kept and beautiful. The roads are paved as are many of the RV sites. There are plenty of lakefront sites with beautiful views, with decks built for the picnic tables. One side of the campground has a great view of the dam. We were greeted by the nicest hosts (Dicky & Vicky), who even delivered some firewood to our campsite for us. They were seen often driving through the park and if we were walking, they always stopped and asked if everything was OK and if we were enjoying our stay. I can't remember having such a nice reception in a government-owned park! Even though it is called Bartow Beach Campground, the beach was closed years ago, but there is a natural little beach that people enjoy swimming from. If I had to guess, I would say it's about 5 miles off I-75 out SR 20, and well worth the drive! - n2fun

Use Route 75 to exit 278. Large campground. Friendly staff at check in. Shady. Some sites looked a little tricky to get into. Some beautiful waterfront sites. Several pull throughs. Our site was on an incline but long enough we could get level. Our site was a large and shady pull through. Had deer walk through in the morning. Bathroom/shower was a walk up an incline. Paved roads throughout for nice walks. No camp store. We were there over a weekend that was a local school break so it was FULL. It was quiet and private. Dollar General within 5 miles. - Jan Orlando
Jul 2018 - $32.00
Agree with all the previous posters except find locking the entrance gate to returning campers at 10:30 PM antiquated. We attended a Braves baseball game and since we returned after that appointed hour we had to park our truck outside and walk just under a mile in the dark I might add to our RV. I suggest issuing a gate code to re enter the park after hours. - Part timers
May 2018 - $16.00
Interagency 50% Senior discount for two nights for a large, paved, pull-thru, 50 amp, water hookup site with a wooden deck overlooking a small cove of Allatoona Lake. A dump station is available. We had good Verizon cell and internet access. The trees prevented satellite TV reception. A busy train track is about a mile away and the noise does affect a quiet evening. Our GPS directed us to the Allatoona Dam Visitor Center instead of the McKinney campground; be sure to check the directions. We would camp here again. - Dave51

Nice campground on beautiful lake. All sites are on lake. Asphalt pad. Only negative I have is we woke up in the morning with the inside and outside of our camper covered in thousands of ants (luckily not fire ants). Took a month to get them out of the inside. Told lady at front gate that our site needed to sprayed but she didn't really care. - Bjb1775
Jun 2016 - $18.00
Beautiful campground and all sites are waterfront w/ 50amp & water. Paved somewhat narrow roads but plenty of overhead clearance. Sites are all paved with gravel tent / picnic area and concrete picnic table. Only a few sites are big enough for 36 ft motorhome. A couple of pull throughs but most are back in. Lots of mature trees and our site ( #14) was secluded on it's own private peninsula. - Appleknocker
Jun 2016 - $30.00
Did not have a reservation but was able to get a spot. This is a small wooded campground convenient to I75. We were given a pull-thru site which was not level as it was on a hill, but we managed as we only stayed one night. Since the park is hilly, most of the back-in and pull-thru sites are at different levels but all have a view of lake Allatoona. We had 50A and water, a nice picnic table/ grill, fire ring and spot for a tent. There is a dump station. There were nice large pavilions and clean bathrooms, one with a washer and dryer. Several campers had brought their boats and we saw folks swimming. There is no wifi or cable tv, no amenities. There are only a few big rig sites. Would stay here again, but would make reservations. - mohocamper

We stayed one night. Electric and water only, site just big enough to park our 25ft travel trailer. Ram 1500 TV had to park next door on mulched yard. Down hill site. Fire ring cluttered. Large pine tree too close to site to allow awning to open fully. Trees on the other side close to site required careful parking to allow room for slide out. Our site was right next to the entrance/exit gate, lots of traffic going by. Other sites farther away may not be as noisy. Dog droppings near site. A railroad runs within 100 ft and is very active with as many as 3 trains per hour, all with loud horns, thundering by at all hours of the day and night. The roads used to get to the campground are not the best, narrow and choppy. We have paid less for much better. Restrooms were clean and recently upgraded or constructed. Nice tile floors and shower walls. Would not stay here again. - Capt RonB
Aug 2018 - $41.00
Great stop over traveling from Tenn to south of Atlanta during the week. You do not want to go thru Atlanta except Sat or Sun if you can help it. We stayed here a few times. It isn't far from 75. Easy in and out and nice to be on the lake to go for a walk after your long day of driving. Great lake front sites and plenty of room to walk around. Different types of sites, most without sewer but there are a few with and you can dump your grey water in grey water areas marked. Full easy to access dump as you leave the CG. We had a very steep site this time but it was a large pull thru - we wanted to stay hooked up and it met our needs. Might ask, if level is important to you. Ducks around everywhere that are very friendly. Great verizon service and over the air channels worked ok. They do have cable but we did not utilize. Trees everywhere so not always sat friendly unless u can move yours around. Lovely rolling park like setting. They have a marina for your boat and a small store with basics. Between the Lake and the Pool, it is a nice summer visit. - FrancisandRenee
Jul 2018 - $55.00
Great views on the peninsula of Lake Allatoona. These amazing views could have made up for the park deficits, though in my view, were not sufficient to change my overall negative review. There are very few sites that have sewer hook-ups at this park. Every Tuesday, they have a service that costs $25 to dump both gray and black water tanks. Most of the sites are unpaved. Most sites are rather highly sloped. A great many of the sites are unpaved. The restrooms were reasonably clean, though not air conditioned. A few of the sites which seemed occupied by longer-term patrons were unkempt with personal belongings. The laundry facility had 3 working, older model, top loading washing machines and 3 very old functioning dryers. Patrons are largely rule-abiding, though they don't enforce the two-vehicle limit rule such that certain areas in the campground seemed like a parking lot. Sadly, I experienced a decidedly agitated patron in the laundry room who offered a direct physical threat. Having sought help from the management office, I was unable to feel comfortable that they would control the agitated man whose profanity and direct physical threats were of great concern. Feeling unsafe, I left the campground early without an offer of an apology by the campground or a refund for the days unused. - talldriver

Dec 2016 - $30.00
This is a campground behind the main marina building. While it has a pretty view at the lakeside, it is apparent that the main business is the marina. The entrance/exit gate is difficult to maneuver around because of all the boats and cars that are parked around it. They have a dump "hole" on the right side of the entrance, in front of the parked boats. (hole only-no water and hard to find without the small sign pointing it out.) One way in/out and the roads are extremely small and in poor condition. The site was pretty level but was buried under so many pine needles we could hardly pick out the perimeter. Fire ring, picnic table and grill at the site. No wifi but we got a good signal with Verizon and AT&T. It looks as if they have made a few improvements (laundry room with washers & dryers in the shower building, next to the marina office) but it is still a work in progress. - LizabethC
Oct 2016 - $25.00
A full service marina and campground. We have camped here. We've had a boat here and this summer for the first time we rented a pontoon to take some out of town family out on the lake. The rental was very nice and reliable. We enjoy all aspects of this marina. Very good service and prices. - Mason Moore
Aug 2011 - $35.00
There are so many things wrong with this place. The gate is broken. There is trash everywhere. The restrooms are nasty and supplies are never available. The office manager is a disorganized and very rude person. We paid $600+ for a month and a week which was not recorded properly and I received harassing calls and then when provided the receipts there was no apology just pure rudeness. Also, our window was shot out while we camped there. It was a disaster and NOT WORTH A PENNY! - TNTRVTRAV
