New review and update from prior review in May. First the update, was contacted by senior Ranger for parks. Explained what happened and received a very nice apology. Ranger said my request should have been granted. He also told me the funding for parks and campgrounds has been increased for 2019 and there will be full time employees next season. New review, as before very nice campground. Water, electric good. Concrete pads, very level. Still no Grey water dumps. The concrete pads are very narrow. We were in #20 and with the tires at the very edge of one side, there was only 12 inches of pad, then a drop off of 12 inches to the sloping downward ground on the door side of our Class C. Dangerous! This is a very old campground and while very well maintained, some upgrades are needed to better serve the current size RVs. Some of the sites have very strangely placed areas for picnic table, fire ring, etc. with concrete sidewalks leading to them, our sidewalk was behind the RV with the picnic table next to the RV, but 5-6 feet below pad level. Some sites rated as "back-in" have the water and power on the wrong side of pad, therefore making them "pull-in". We will be staying again, but have made a list of the sites with the best layouts as this is a site specific reservation system. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Motorhome.

Our first time in a C.O.E. campground. First the positives. Well maintained roads and campsites. Concrete pads with asphalt driveways, mostly level. Volunteer camp attendants, which is both good and bad. Good water pressure and power. Beautiful lakeside sites but not many of those. Book early. Now, the bad. No permanent on-site staff. no grey water dumps, the one sewer dump hard to get into and out of. Gate/office is only staffed by volunteers a few hours a day. Showers clean with good hot water, but no benches in shower stall. Only one small hook on the back of the doors. Reservation system is ridiculous! New contractor for system with typical lack of training. Will only allow reservations for the weekend for 2 days, no matter what. Example, we were booked Sunday thru Saturday. Our site was available Sunday night, with someone else pulling in Monday. When we tried to extend our stay to Sunday, were told NO, Sunday is part of the weekend and weekends have 2 day minimum. Reserve America representative told me to go to the office, which wasn't open. Volunteer told me to drive to the Project Office about 5 miles down the road and ask Park ranger to allow the additional night. Was told NO, weekend is 2 night minimum, even though there was only one night open between reservations. Typical federal government thinking, instead of making money allowing a one night extension, they got nothing. We will go back to this campground, but now will make sure we book the whole weekend. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Lots of shopping close by, but watch out for rush hour, major traffic on the 2 lane road. Gate hours 7am to 10:30pm. They actually lock the gate at 10:30pm!!

We booked and paid for our site online. There was no one at the gatehouse but we knew our site number and parked there. Beautiful sites and gorgeous views on the lake. Sites have water and electric. There is a good dump station on your way out. Sites are clean and well maintained with concrete pads for the Rv. Roads are paved. We loved this park and would definitely recommend! We camped at Sawnee COE in a Motorhome.

This was a really great park for a 2 night stay. We stayed Fri-Sun and had a great time. The sites were nicely laid out with some decent privacy between them. Each had water and power (50amp) and a picnic table with a fire ring. They sold firewood on site. The campground is right on a lake which was beautiful and very serene. There were some boats on the lake (Lake Lanier is extremely popular for boaters) but we did not notice any extra noise. The staff were all very nice. The dump station would be my only "ding" on this park as getting in requires some tight turns. Also, the park gates close at 10:30 so you have to be in or you get locked out. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you are into baseball the Gwinnet Braves (minor league affiliate of the Atlanta Braves) play very close and they have a great stadium. Semi convenient to Atlanta but that city always has traffic so be ready for that. The campground is near a ton of shops and restaurants (there is a big plaza about 5-10 mins away with an Outback, TJ Maxx, Dicks Sporting goods, a movie theater) and gas stations.

Sites 12 thru 25 are the most scenic and are the ones being reviewed. They are on a peninsula overlooking the lake. All sites have tall pines offering shade and sun. The parking pads are paved and level but narrow. They also have picnic tables that sit on a concrete pad and offer a fire ring as well as a BBQ grill. The only draw back to many of the sites is the ground drops off steeply from the parking pads making exit/entry to your camper difficult. We were in site #20 and to get to the first step of our camper was about 20 inches. If it were not for this I would have given the sites a rating of 10. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall the stay was good, except for the rude and condescending behaviour to multiple people. I ended up hearing about other people having similar issues while on site. 30amp service worked, but my surge protector showed that the polarity was reversed. Might be an issue. There is one dump site. Worked well, except for it being a monsoon. Water really collect in the dump area and it's hard to keep it all stable while trying to unload. Our spot was great with a gorgeous view of the lake, near a beach where we were able to beach our boat. Really close to Atlanta and great for a weekend get away. Lady doing check in just needs an attitude adjustment. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Travel Trailer.

There is a private boat dock for loading and unloading and boat ramp for campers only. Look forward to next visit. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Motorhome.

Go out and meet some people. People who used to live in the area chose Sawnee Campgrounds over many others. That is a good sign that people love the campground.

Super convenient to Atlanta. Nice views of the lake, although the few waterfront sites book up quickly. Hosts are extremely helpful and friendly. Some sites have utilities on the same side as the patio / tent pads, which is a little awkward. Overall a great quick getaway from town. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is my family's favorable campground closer to our home, especially if we are able to secure reservation to one of the lakefront sites. If you do, you will have an abundant (three D) view of Lake Lanier. The lake level is so full this period that you can either fish from your site or swim right at your site. The restroom was rebuilt recently and is always clean. The couple on duty during our two separate stays are very friendly and helpful. The entire site is very clean and well taken care off. The only set back is the fact that you cannot access the campground within the hours of 10:30 pm and 7:30 am. The COE should consider installing a key pad so campers can enter and exit the campground after hours. We will surely continue to camp here for our short-term campings. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Travel Trailer.

Nice small campground. We camped on the point in site# 17. This area was very nice and shaded and even a breeze, but could not access the lake due to the seawall and fence. Many of the sites are backwards aka picnic table and sidewalk are behind camper-a little awkward, but manageable. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Travel Trailer.

We had our reservations made and confirmed January 1st, 2012 for our arrival in May 2012 for 11 days. The cost reflects Senior rates. Our friends also made their reservations at the same time, we were talking on the phone and online at the same time picking out our spots together. That is a great benefit to all people! Then COE people contacted us and had to change our site due to have the park renovated and our original site was not going to be RV sites any longer including our friend's site. So we had to coordinate again with the reservation people on the telephone and finally it worked out, we thought! When we arrived to Cumming a day early (we stayed at another place for one night), we decided to go check out our spot at the campground and it was just before closing around 9:30PM. The camp host, Winn, was so kind to help us and allow us to see our sites before closing time. When we looked at our new site, it was obviously way too small for our travel trailer and our truck. We immediately went back to the camp host and said there was no way we or our friend could ever fit in those two new spots! We are too big. All in all, everything worked out okay one night before our arrival because of Winn's personal attention to make things right. We even were able to take care of our friends and get them a spot for their much larger 5th wheel. While we were visiting the park for 11 days, that is when it was rescheduled (the second or third time) to redo the park with huge machinery to break up concrete and asphalt. Other machinery to make new roads to the new campsites. More machinery to lay the stinky and sticky asphalt down. The people working did a great job especially the asphalt guys, they took extra care when doing the asphalt around our rig and didn't, Did Not get any oil or asphalt onto our rig whatsoever! They had no control of the smell for a few days and that was unpleasant. I don't believe this park will be appropriately opened for travel trailers or 5th wheels since I believe they made it more accommodating for tent style camping. There was one launch open that I saw for boating on the lake. Now that they have redone the park at this specific loop, the Sawnee Campground, it will be beautiful for someone, but not us. We have a Travel Trailer and our friends have a 5th wheel. I would suggest to find another COE park on the other side of Lake Sydney Lanier to have a pleasant time. The most positive time was the Camp hosts. They made our visit a lot better! Camp hosts are very important and necessary. We camped at Sawnee COE in a Travel Trailer.

Breathtaking views all around us! Beautiful lake for swimming and boating. Campground has a boat ramp and beach area. Clear and clean water to keep cool in. Marina close by (15 min drive) where we rented a boat at a reasonable price. Sites were large but not necessarily private. Big rigs will not make friends on the roads leading to the campground because the road is narrow and curvy. Plenty of room to navigate inside the park. No sewer or cable (these would have made my rating a 10). Clean restrooms. Did I mention the view? I'll be back again! We camped at Sawnee COE in a Motorhome.
