This is a very pretty private park along the water. Tent campsites look lovely! Unfortunately for those of us staying in a camper van, not so much. All vehicles including camper vans park in the same bark-covered parking lot, so there is absolutely no privacy nor anything to recommend camping here except for the lovely bathrooms, showers, and beach to the east nearer to the highway (sandy vs. rocky) which is very nice to snorkel. They did assign us a tent campsite as well with picnic table, which was a nice gesture, but overall the best things about this campground are the bath facilities. - KyKampers

I camped here in a rented Dodge Caravan, it was my 50th state to visit and RV camp in. RV camping is in a level parking lot, no hookups. There are hot showers and bathrooms nearby. There are tentalows and tent sites for rent. It is right on the beach. The landscaping is beautiful and the view of the mountains across the road is very scenic. The price of $20 is per person, not per unit. - mrracechaser

Waianapanapa State Park is renowned for its black sand beach along the Hana Highway. Up to 6 camper vans are permitted per night (best to get reservations in advance and must bring printed copy). There is also tent camping available. The camper vans are confined to a small lot, but everyone stays out of everyone else's way. The gates are shut and locked at 6pm. The one shower is an outdoor communal one and drinking water is from the two water fountains. There are flush toilets. Plan to bring dinner with you or to eat early as all the restaurants and food options along the Hana Highway close very early (by 4pm). - KyKampers

This campground was in the Kipahulu district of the Haleakala National Park. The campground itself is extremely basic with cooking grills and vault toilets. Drinking water is available at the visitor's center. Sites are on a first-come, first-served basis and all are grass and not marked in any way except for the availability of a grill and picnic table. It was very quiet except for the crashing of the waves on the rocky coast below. The stars are fantastic at night! - KyKampers
