Overall a nice park. Sites are fairly large and level. Some sites do have 50 amp service while others are for boondocking. I felt the grass and trees could have used a good trimming in order to accommodate larger rigs. We found a nice electric site with no reserved tag on it. We were shocked because it was July 3 so we asked the camp host if it was available and were told if no reserve tag is present it's open. We set up everything only to be told be the same camp host it was reserved. So we moved to a different site--no apology. The next time a camper takes the time to ask the camp host what's available maybe she will check her paperwork. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.

What all "campgrounds" should be - beautiful, spacious sites under the trees, the sound of a river in the background, and the smell of pines - what a relaxing experience. Paved interior roads and sites with large sites in the electric loop. No cell or internet service, but you may have a shot through the trees at the TV satellites. The lodge is walking distance and has good food, and you may be able to receive email in the bar. A wonderful place to stay and a bargain with the senior pass. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: September, 2016 - $21.00
Overall Rating:

This campground is very well organized. Firewood was available from the wood cleared after the winter season. The campsites are well spaced. There is 50 amp power available with very easy access. There is a reservation system in place but there are also walk up sites. The location of the Lochsa River Lodge, their store, gas (diesel) and cafe are all great perks. We camped here in early June 2016 and Sept. 2016. The only criticism I have of this campground is the lack of access to the LOLO Motorway. The forest Service road to this historical trail is less than 1 block east of the entrance to this campground. However is is regularly patrolled by the Idaho State Patrol and NO OHV's are allowed on this very short route to this trail. There is no parking area up this forest service road big enough to trailer your ATV's to trail head. It is a shame to have such a wonderful campground so close to a great riding area but no way to legally access it. We have a Toy hauler trailer and that would mean we would need to break camp, load up atvs, drive up to trailhead all for a 1/2 block ride. We could not do that any way because there is no place to park our trailer once we get on the trail. We camped at Powell Campground in a Travel Trailer.

As others wrote, this is one of the nicest Nat'l Forest parks. The word was out among other campers that the park closed at the end of Sept (in a few days) but a ranger at Lolo Visitor Center said closure would be October 15. There was no sign indicating when it would close (and most other NFS camps were already closed), the camp host had already left and they had even pulled the dumpsters so you had to take your trash with you! However, it was a wonderful stay for a couple of nights and would have enjoyed longer. As reported asphalt pads and roads, 50 amp electric in largest loop, nicely wooded and spaced. Many sites suitable for our Class A 35' and saw larger RVs. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Jerry Johnson Hot Springs 10 mi downriver were wonderful after a fairly easy 1+ mile hike. Excellent area for doing the Lewis and Clark Trail.

This is a forest service campground but it has electric hookup in about half the sites, and flush toilets. It is next door to a lodge with a restaurant, fuel and a convenience store, but they cannot be seen from the campground. The roads and sites pads are paved and there were a number of pull throughs. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. It's a lovely place in the woods. The full rate for electric is $20 and non electric is $14. No cell service. We camped at Powell Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Really enjoyed this campground. It was quiet, private, shady. The forest felt like we were in the Pacific Northwest. Close and convenient to the river, hot springs, convenience store, and a lodge. Far enough off the highway that there was no road noise. We camped at Powell Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This is true camping, many sites have power and water, nice spacing between sight, lots of open area. Such a treat to be at real campground. There is no ATT at sight but if you go up the road to the lodge and set in there bar you can get little internet. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The whole drive along the 12 is very pretty, but this drive is not for the faint of heart. It narrow 2 lines with river on one side and heavy traffic on the other, no spot for a new driver.

This is a very nice Forest Service campground with electrical available at about 25 sites. The sites are wide with plenty of room for your slideouts. I would not recommend it for large motor homes or 5th wheels. A bonus is the Lochsa Lodge which is a short walk from the campground. We enjoyed a nice dinner there. They have Wi-Fi available in the bar area. No cell phone service. We camped at Powell Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

One word describes this place: perfect! Located in the heavily forested Bitterroot Mountains, yet easily accessible with paved interior roads and sites. We were lucky to have one of two pull-through sites, extra long with a large clearing for the table and fire ring. No cell or Aircard service, but some sites (ours included) allowed a clear shot to the satellite. Quiet, dark, and peaceful at night. Close to the Lochsa River and surrounded by high, tree-covered mountains, and within walking distance of the lodge and small store. A magical place; we'll stay here again. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.

One of the best NFS campgrounds we have found. One loop has 50 Amp service, the other unserviced. Paved roads and pads. There is a great lodge, Lochsa Lodge just before the entrance to the campground that has very good food at a very reasonable price. They also have gas and diesel moderately priced and free WiFi for customers. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.

Beautiful setting with sites nicely spaced. Water spigots spaced around campground but did not find spigot to fill RV water tank; electric at sites; there is no dump station; tough to rate the campground since it rained all evening so we didn't get to explore the area; would stay there again. We camped at Powell Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Great forest service campground right on the Lochsa River off Hwy 12. There is only electric hook-ups for some of the sights but no water or sewer. It was a surprise this time as they had up-graded the electrical to include 50 amp service. This was our second visit here and we will go back. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.

This is a Forest Service campground in the Lolo pass area of Northern ID. Highway 12 is 45 miles west of Lola Montana. Very beautiful area and the plus for this camp is that they have plenty of spaces for larger rigs. Park have electrical to many sights which is unusual for a Forest camp. Restrooms clean with modern facilities, wonderful lodge next door for good meals. Campground host very accommodating, excellent place to stay in this area. We camped at Powell Campground in a Motorhome.
