Good location to the dunes/lake shore. No water no sewer at sites; concrete pad but terribly out of level; grass way over due for mowing, kept the mosquitoes near. I mistakenly reserved the wrong dates as we are traveling cross country. The office manager would not even speak to me about simply switching dates. She told me to cancel and rebook, to which I fell prey to Indiana's punishing cancellation policy. The so-called Park Rangers do not work for the customers/tax payers in Indiana, they work for the state. Beware. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

Loved this park. The restrooms/showers were a bit dingy due to continual use throughout the summer; but they are clean. The camp store had ice cream which is always a bonus. Don't think any sites had sewer or water; but there is a dump station and several potable water spigots throughout the camp. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

Large campground that was completely filled. Best to make reservations several weeks in advance. Sites are concrete pads and are level. Many sites are close together. Our site (#69) offered more space and a little more privacy. Many good walking trails. Bathhouses were clean and the park is well maintained. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a fantastic campground situated right on Lake Michigan, easy to navigate with long, level, paved campsites. Good separation from neighbors. We stayed here 9/11 to 9/15. There are many dune trails to hike, although we didn't do any hiking while we were there. We were in site 125 (electric only), but had to run off 30 amp power as our surge protector showed a reverse polarity error when plugged into the 50 amp outlet. We told the maintenance man, who looked at it but wasn't able to fix it while we were there.
The pavilion near the beach was closed for the season, and we heeded the dangerous condition signs posted for no swimming or wading in the lake. Bathrooms were clean, and shower area had a few bugs and no place to hang items (like clothes or a towel), but had good water pressure. There is also a one-time $12 fee for non-residents when entering the campground. Overall a very nice campground and we would stay here again. We
camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We arrived on Sunday without reservations because it showed plenty of availability. However, checkout time on Sunday is 5pm so only sites available were ones that had been checked out of. It turned out ok for us just something to be aware of if arriving on Sunday. Paved roads and campsites with electric only. Lots of trees and we weren't able to use our satellite but we did get several OTA stations. Strong Verizon signal for hotspot since there isn't wifi. Plenty of grass for dog walking. Would be a great place for family camping. We would return if in the area. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

Be aware you will pay a $12 state park visitor fee on top of the camping fee, so the cost of the evening was $44. We used this park for an overnight stay as we were traveling east from Missouri to Detroit. What a great find! Our site #66 was a back in, electric only 50amp. The site was level and we had some privacy due to the size of the lot and the natural vegetation between us and the campers around us. We were there on a Friday, so the campground was quite full. Reservations are a must. We enjoyed hiking across the boardwalk to the shore of Lake Michigan and viewing the Chicago skyline in the distance. There was ample room to leave our truck hooked up to the camper. We would stay here again. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Clean but family-filled state park, full on a weekday in mid-summer. Fifty amp connection did not work; was repaired the next day. Neighbor let us use his 50 amp socket. Satellite TV okay. Some space between sites. The namesake dunes are the main attraction. Trails to dunes are more moderate than easy. One hour to downtown Chicago midday, 1 ½ hours return at 4 pm. Verizon service good. 60 antenna channels. Town of Chesterton close for grocery shopping - no Walmart or KMart. Camp store has limited food supply. Rate was $99 for four nights; additionally there was a $5 transaction fee, $7 sales tax, and a one time $12 non-resident entry fee. Actual cost was $30/night. Our site was a back in, paved, 50 amp site. The 50 amp may not have been wired correctly because our external surge guard did not turn on. Water and sewer sites are not available in this park. The site was sloped and required blocks under the front tires. We had good Verizon cell and Internet reception. We had marginal DishTV satellite reception because of the trees. We arrived on Memorial Day when the campground was full. During the remainder of our stay more than half the sites were vacant. We would stay here again. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

"Scavenger hunt" was a lot of fun. "Century of Progress" homes were interesting. If you're looking for a break from camping food, AJ's Pizza in Valparaiso is very good and popular with the locals. There is also a commuter train station nearby, so the park could be used as a base station for trips into Chicago on the South Shore line. (about 1.5 hours each way)

There are an amazing number of things to do in the state park and the adjacent Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. There is hiking/walking along the lake, hiking on wonderful trails in the sand dunes, and biking on several trails in the parks and just outside. You can stop at the National Lakeshore visitor center on the entry road into the State Park where they have a map of the trails, as well as a map of other wonderful bike trails in the area.
TheJim • June 2016 -
We spent several days hiking around the lake, dunes, and marshes. There's plenty of well-marked trails to amble, mostly easy walks. We were looking forward to Trail #2 which had a long boardwalk across an even longer marshland. But after walking for an hour we found the boardwalk, well, boarded up. It was in disrepair and quite dangerous. So we diverted to Trail #9 which climbed up steep dunes with ankle deep sand. A more strenuous hike to be sure, but worth the view at the top. These dunes are really impressive. They're not the puny mounds of sand like those found in Florida, but large hillsides with old growth forest of black oak and beech. In the woods a variety of spring flowers were in bloom, and on the dunes thick prairie grass waved in the ever-present breeze from the lake. Way out in the distance, across Lake Michigan, you can see the skyline of Chicago. The communities surrounding the National Park offer plenty of activities for tourists. But the weather was a bit nippy for long excursions on our motorcycle - a mid-May cold snap kept us closer to camp. We did manage a short ride to neighboring Beverly Shores, a swanky lakeside community with a NPS pavilion and beach access. We will need to return to this area to explore all it has to offer when the weather is more cooperative.

Check out hiking the 3 Dune Challenge (3DuneChallenge.com) that goes over three of the tallest dunes on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Visit the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore that surrounds the state park; a good way to start the National Lakeshore visit is the visitor center that is about 1.5 miles south of the state park entrance.
RXA-ADM • August 2015 -
Easy access to Chicago either by train (South Shore Line station is nearby) or by simply driving in, but there are tolls. We've done both. Check out the Craftsman houses at the nearby National Park, they're really interesting designs.
